The biggest bomb threat on a boat in my opinion is not batteries or electrical systems gone wrong, but are gas cookers because idiots don't know what they are doing to safely install a gas cooker on their boat. As I am an idiot, I stay away from gas cookers, and use alcohol cookers - which yes, can still cause idiots to start a fire but generally are way safer than gas.

Try the Classic Boat Builders that are in Whangateau. They might know about how to get a mooring. https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/287523138699/whangateau-traditional-boats/

Chubasco the Chico 30? If so, I sailed on her for a day years ago with previous owner of many years, Mike Kalaugher , who is very nice man, and also wrote a fantastic book showing how ridiculous the whole Sounds Murder case against Scott Watson was. Anyway, if you are looking for a manual windlass, hit up Grant at 'Chains Ropes & Anchors' as he often has 2nd hand manual windlasses available. I actually sold / exchanged (for a discount on an electric winch), a manual windlass a few years ago - so he could be a good bet.

Better leave the wife at home then...

Radar, AIS, etc.... good aids for sure, but my question is -> you gotta sleep, even as a single-hander, so you truly cannot always be keeping a watch, at least not a human one. I guess the gizmo's do a beepy thing loud enough to wake you up from dreaming about mermaids when another ship is near..... AIS does for sure, not sure about radar.

‘Man overboard’ is offensive term, says Royal Yachting Association

Yes, men who make their wife walk the plank have been saying this for years.... -
Option 1 - they need to get real and live with it and educate, but cut the banning anchoring crap. Latest evidence I heard / read sometime ago, is natural currents are way more effective in spreading it than an anchor ever could be.

I could hear the roar of the particular gust as it hit our house- nothing like I have heard before. The whole house shook, and then the crash as the tree did it's thing. Next thing to do at sun up is phone my mate in Mangawhai to see if my boat shed up there is still standing.

Its blowing out there. Bound to be reports of boats ashore after broken loose on moorings tomorrow. This massive Pine just uprooted and smashed our carport and landed at the front of the house - amazingly it seems the carport saved the car from being mashed, and probably helped save our front porch. Be careful out there crewdotorgers.

AC has become a laughing stock of a race - read the cutting views of the punters in the comments.....

Double dipping by IRD is an artform. For example - if you get made redundant with a payout - that payout is added to your annual salary WITHOUT staggered tax brackets - so for most people that means their payout gets taxed at a full 39%.

You are equating wearing a life jacket on a tender ride / row to shore to wearing a seatbelt in a car. Seriously? There are many aspects to this debate. But, if you’re so worried about danger on a dinghy ride to shore, maybe you should wear a helmet and elbow pads too just in case you trip over your own paranoia. Life jackets have their place, but rowing a tender isn’t one of them. They restrict arm movement, catch on oar handles, and can actually tip you in if they snag at the wrong moment. Not to mention if you do end up in the water and the jacket rolls you face-down, congratulations

And I always though 'Free Willy" was about a whale...

Right, so because of that guy, we all should be made to wear a life jacket in our dinghy? If not, I don't see the point of your post other than to pull at emotional strings. I am sorry for that guy, I am also sorry for everyone that dies every day from accidents the world over from slipping in showers to my 99 year old grandad that would have reached a 100 if he didn't fall down the front door steps of his own home. And I am not kidding, that is what happened.
-
So newsflash... I will be ignoring their rule. What are they gonna do? Have a cop at every dinghy landing to "arrest" me?

What about a system like Banks and FInance Companies have = you go on a bad credit report, and Debt collectors can chase you up.

I think he is referring to cruising permits and other fees - price is going up up up.

Speaking of the Barrier I just sailed there...via Youtube on my incredibly unpopular channel. (The real sail was over 2 years ago - I just found the footage while scrolling through my back up files this morning, so made a video) Apologies for Fred Drift. Looks like I will need breast augmentation, laser hair removal, wig, and transition drugs if I ever hope to fund my sailing trip to the Bahamas or anywhere else in the world beyond Cape Reinga the way it is going. BP is right.

Do you have / did you buy the Orca specific tablet they sell? The big selling point is 1200 nits, so sunlight readable on the most sunny day .....

Container ship barely misses Norwegian man’s house after running aground. The bow of the 11,000-ton NCL Salten remained in the man’s backyard as authorities investigated the cause. By Vivian Ho - Washington Post A man in Norway woke to find a 443-foot shipping vessel towering over his home after it ran aground into his yard. Johan Helberg had slept through the initial impact of the NCL Salten as it sailed into his yard in Byneset, Norway, early Thursday morning, Helberg said in an interview with the Norwegian broadcaster NRK. But after waking to his neighbors ringing his do
