    Soft shackles

    I make them regularly, theres a good knot app called Grogs Animated Knots that happens to have step by step instructions for 2 different styles. I use this design;
  3. Tend to agree but thats the way of the real world, business comes first. The quota system is not bad in principle but without anti trust rules the concentration of ownership ends up with a few big players who have then have political clout- export money, jobs etc so they can influence policy. I cant comment on recreational vs commercial take but i would be very surprised if commercial didnt outweigh recreational by vastly huge amounts. Recreational fishers are a bit hit and miss despite GPS whereas commercial fishers probably know where the last scallop live (or lived!)
  4. Anything that raises awareness about the depletion of the marine environment and leads to a positive change in behaviour is a good thing. Call it what you want, the term rahui can be emotive but education is the key to understanding its place in modern society. This year apart from not really being in the fishing mood, I found myself only taking just enough for the next meal. Usually I snorkel a few scallops at Kawau but the shallow beds were bare this year. Also went diving a few times around the rocks, no crays either but tbh the most enjoyable activity was feeding the reef fish a few kin
  5. Land value in Auckland makes private haulout facilities very expensive, traditionally public land was made available for haulouts with clubs usually running them. You know kind of like sports grounds who use publicly owned land for their private activities. Can anyone join the club is the same as saying can anyone haul their boat? My objection to the removal is that its part of the character and tradition of the area- over 100 years of hauling boats, but that's not so important, what alternative can the council provide given their pogrom against blue collar boat ownership.
  6. Rabbit holes is a good way to describe boat work, particularly wooden boats. Look at that tiny soft spot, no worries grind it out and a bit of bog... Nek minit youre 3 months and 20k down!
  7. That is so true, A 100k boat can easily have a 100k spent on it and still be worth a 100 or less. That's just boats, particularly older ones.
  8. That Chico has got potential, but a mate has one and complains about a pretty unpleasant motion at anchor but that may just be his boat
  9. Totally agree Wheels, as soon as you buy a boat the clock is ticking because everything is still wearing out to some degree and definitely depreciating. However if its in basically good condition then its a matter of keeping on top of it, a battery, some lines, a sail, antifoul etc. The common idea that 10% of what its worth in good condition in maintenance costs is probably not too far away. Spend nothing for 5 years then suddenly you will need to spend 5 years worth on the rig or something. There is a certain reality that as boats become less desirable they fall into lower price ranges
  10. ^^This absolutely! What a few cruisers do is dam the deck around the filler after a few minutes of rain or direct a scupper into a container
  11. One of the cheap liveaboard options is ferrocement. The boats are typically very well insulated, quiet and have a settled motion due to the weight. Ideal if you intend live up an estuarine river somewhere and not do too much travelling. Not as many around these days.
  12. Good boats in their day but It is VERY easy to spend 20k on boat maintenance and wonder where it went. If you could stretch to something like this Matangi, it would be an excellent liveaboard https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/listing/3427370570?bof=7vQiLzKA
  13. I didn't mention the kidney as security! I see that Westpac is offering personal loans at 14%, still the general idea is that if you have cashflow and you can get a reasonable loan rate you are better off buying and enjoying now if indeed its just for a short time.
  14. It was a wonderful evening at Scotts, everytime I go there ((haven't missed it in 20 years) its always good. Full tide, warm easterly weather, very settled conditions. The best yacht regatta in NZ.
  15. It also depends on your age- sub 25 you can live in a Hartley 16 with your girlfriend and dog but post 60 you're probably going to need a bit more room. The best advice I can offer is look at the numbers. 2 Bedroom unit in AK is about 500 per week (minimum) call that in round figures 25k per year dead money- poof gone! Everyone needs to pay rent or mortgage so its all about how to spend it. If you are in a position to borrow say 100,000 even at 10% if you buy well, at the end of a year you're ahead because you are not spending like you would ashore. Assume depreciation is minimal be

    Nowcasting

Over the years I have downgraded the importance of nowcasting reports below Metvuw, the Windy models or Predictwind briefings in the gulf. On the VHF the cheesy advertising is irritating and you have to adjust each location for the wind at sea level- Bean overreads, Tiri even more, Channel is always windy, the Mokes always so mild, often a station is down etc... You generally get a pretty good idea from the forecasts.
  17. Many people had a great ride home today!
  18. All I know is that hard core cavers are next level, did quite a bit in the Nelson area for a while and its incredibly rewarding. Getting in and out of boat lockers is good training
  19. Try the hinkle horn honking hole on for size, 😬
  20. My bike has pretty reasonable insurance as i am in a certain pool of both bikes and riders that present low risk. Its all to do with how the actuaries assign risk. Tris are probably lumped in with rafts in general, but all those Lagoons and Leopards must have cover so perhaps age and materials matter?
  21. The commerce commision is crystal clear. What is a quote? A quote is an offer to do a job for a certain price. If the customer accepts the quote, then there is a contract for you to do the work for that price. If there is extra work involved that was not covered by the original quote, you must have agreement from the customer to change the price. What is an estimate? An estimate is the nearest price, or range of prices, that you can give based on past experience. If there may be any significant variation from the estimated price, you should make this, and the natu
  22. Most of us will have either swallowed the anchor or be compost by 2050 I had a 3000 for a while, good but a burning meths always smells a bit horrible. I even tried the highest alcohol content available from a chemical supplier but I think its the denaturing additive.
