  2. FYI, still or again not accessible from here.
  3. I've been in 35+ in a Catana 43 and it felt a lot scarier at the time than what this looks. Mind you we weren't going downwind and it was night time with driving rain. Others may have more expertise on this, but apart from the wind speed the sea state here doesn't look force 10 to me. NOAA's definition is "Very high waves (29-41 ft) with overhanging crests, sea white with densely blown foam"
  4. I gather this is the Flow Fouling product rather than the Silikon that Redline has? If it has a felt-like surface, what does that do to drag?
  5. Ok kids, can't resist a little rant. A total tangent. Skip if you're not in the mood... Socialism: "collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods" - Miriam-Webster In this case, Panuku is precisely the government owned and administered means of producing and ultimately distributing (e.g. through sale or leasing of properties they develop) goods consisting of "a new community with homes, cafes, retail and public space" (their words). Does that matter? Well you can decide for yourself, but what is certain is that the

    Imoca 60

Cool. 8 tonnes vs 13. Love that they've done a full-size mock-up and are getting input from a lot of people. Interested to see Ray Davies in there.
  7. There's nothing sinister about op-eds written by non-academics, as long as the author's identity and affiliation are disclosed. The RNZ piece makes no suggestion that people are paying for the privilege of writing them, in fact the exact opposite. If you disagree with the Herald's editorial, go ahead and write a cogent rebuttal and send it to the them. But my advise for what it's worth... you'll need more than "berth rentals are gonna rise and we don't like it."
  8. Hmm... Nothing to do with RTW, but personally I race an F16 catamaran, singlehanded with spinnaker. Sure, part of the fun is the pure competitive aspect, but a lot is the actual sailing. When it comes to fun, sailing fast on the edge of control, with extremely direct feedback from the elements, is a whole different thing. Combine that with the tactical challenges of racing and you have the perfect experience!
  9. Thanks for sharing. Any idea of the fate of the boat?
  10. That's the model Mads at Sail Life uses... https://www.youtube.com/user/madsdahlke/search?query=refleks
  11. Cool, I didn't notice that as I was connected before through a VPN, which Amazon blocks, but you're right - it's free here on Prime as well.
  12. In the US it's available to rent on Amazon for $1.99 - https://www.amazon.com/Following-Seas-Tyler-J-Kelley/dp/B075FX7MGD/ref=sr_1_1
  13. They get your name and an id number, plus your email and profile picture. They're simply using those sites to authenticate you rather than you having to provide them with a separate password and forcing you to remember what password you gave them. It's very secure and more for your benefit that theirs (imo, speaking as a developer). It uses a technique called OAuth. I've used it on several of my own sites (though personally I always give people the choice of providing an email and password directly to my site if they prefer to do that). When you sign in they redirect you to the social medi

    R2AK 2018

And one without even a paddle! https://r2ak.com/2018-teams-full-race/team-extreme-sobriety/ Though I don't see him on the tracker, so maybe reality intervened.
  15. Video of the passing manoeuvre - https://twitter.com/volvooceanrace/status/1007269816892297216
  16. Though since you mention that, the lack of facilities to wipe your own bum is actually the rationale Westhaven give for not allowing liveaboards.
  17. Thanks, interesting. Also I just read here - http://www.yachtingmonthly.com/boat-events/golden-globe-race/golden-globe-abandons-uk-france-brexit-finances-63401 that the French are providing support valued at a million euro - race village, media centre etc.
  18. Cool. Any idea why the start was moved from Falmouth to Les Sables-d'Olonne?
  19. Volvo have sold the race to a group led by current executives but will remain as sponsors for 2021. The new owners have indicated that the current V65's may be joined in the next edition by an additional class, which reading between the lines sounds like it might bear some relation to the Vendee Globe. https://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/news/11833_Next-edition-of-the-race-planned-for-2021-under-new-ownership.html
  20. A decent number of well-known companies sponsoring him... http://www.yrvind.com/sponsors.html
  21. Very cool. Some video footage here: http://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2018/05/shifting-sands-reveal-150yo-shipwreck-in-auckland.html

    Oh ROT!

    Yep: https://www.cruisingclub.org/node/12582 https://www.cruisingworld.com/knocked-down-never-out
  23. I saw she was listed at AUD79k, which is a lot less that you would expect to pay in NZ. Is that indicative of the difference in Aust/NZ boat prices in general, or did Meister just get a screaming bargain?
  24. Apparently... https://www.dn.no/dnaktiv/2018/05/23/2051/Vannsport/dette-skal-bli-verdens-raskeste-seilbat Is someone keeping track of how many teams have expressed interest? What happens if they have more competitors than space?
  25. That'll be why Goff refers to it as a "pre-feasibility study." http://bit.ly/2rWr7QF But I guess when you're angling to spend north of 1.1 billion of other people's money, it pays to soften those people up with a few of these first. To use my earlier bucket comment as an analogy, if someone really thought a stadium made actual financial sense, they could float a development company on the NZSX and let people make up their own minds about whether to buy in to it. But giving people a choice is not how thugs operate.
