Thinking about that trip Wellington to Auckland, I was really enjoying it up to losing steering and autopilot somewhere between east cape and Colville channel. But I did discover steering a 60ft schooner with a 6 ft emergency tiller is possible, if a little tedious.

I sailed from Mooloolaba to Auckland via Lord Howe on her. Pat Costello was the owner and had just won the single handed Trans tasman race. I think he wanted someone to talk to. Great little boat and I enjoyed the trip immensely.

I think it should be the skippers decision. I was interested that a couple of countries visited recently insisted on ais and that it be on. Ours stopped transmitting at one point and they got agitated. " is there a technician on this island who can look at it?". Nope.

My suggestion for the next AC which I am sure will be ignored.: A single fleet race in J boats. All crew to have a current passport for the country of the yc they represent. One boat per challenger. Now to think of a fun course, around Waiheke?

Here's a broadly generalized moan. The airline wants 525dollars to take one extra bag ( I needed some new rope, spectra unavailable in PNG.) The fare for me and 1 bag was 1700.
