Grant, you still haven't said what benefit a law would be. If someone doesn't have the judgement to wear a life jacket when require, would they have the judgement to follow a law?

That's what life lines are for. And toe rails. Sounds like you would have been better off with appropriate footwear, which would have more effectively addressed the risk of slipping than the life jacket. There is no parallel between seat belt laws and a law for cumpulsory wearing of life jackets. Can you state the benefit of a compulsory life jacket law? Will it reduce hospital admissions? Will it reduce severity of injuries from motor vehicle crashes? Will it improve cancer survival rates? Will it reduce domestic violence? Will it improve human rights? Will it improve economic gro

Classic! So I wear an inflatable jacket with crotch straps, knife, spray hood, and also carry a PLB on my person. On occasion, the crotch strap can catch on the winches as I step over them to get out of the cockpit and move up the side deck. I'm not talking about bulky foam lifejackets here. The point is that mandatory use of a safety item (lifejacket) doesn't mean improved safety. It is obviously intended to improve safety, but doesn't actually mean it will, and doesn't mean that other hazards aren't introduced due to that safety item. Don't get me wrong, I fully support wearing lifejac

What benefits do you see from a law change? I'm interested in your perception as to why life jackets are so important, and what is wrong with crews in inshore waters (i.e. going around the cans) without life jackets on. There are a number of situations where wearing a lifejacket increases risks and hazards. Life jackets are only of benefit if you are in the water, but do not address any aspects of not going into the water. They can increase tripping hazards (by obstructing a view of your feet) and can be cumbersome to move around in quickly. I believe the biggest risk to individuals,

Must have been bad. They're missing a hull.
  6. Most likely due to a law of physics. If it's a centrifugal pump the outlet needs to be perpendicular to the axis of the impellor, or in other words, horizontal. A positive displacement type pump such as a progressive cavity pump would have a vertical outlet, but they tend to have lower flow and much higher head. The majority of bilge pump applications would want as high a flow as possible and not that high a head. I'm guessing you can't just turn it on its side as the inlet will be on the bottom and laying it down would leave the inlet clear of the water?
  7. Your boat probably would look like that after 12 months, if it hadn't been in the water all that time. How many conspiracy theories are there about this thing? And anyway, wasn't the debri found up on a beach? I.e. Not in the water. And here is me thinking this was going to be another positive thread for copper coat.
  8. The classic thing with consultation is its just that, consultation. There is no obligation to listen to the consultation. Otherwise I think its called a vote.
  9. Sounds more like a handicap than anything, if your racing and looking at Facebook instead of your sails and wind on the water. If it's a publicly available page it's no different to the now casting, which would be much greater advantage to anyone monitoring that in the situation of significant changes in wind condition. Private messages from one boat to another or an exclusive group of boats about changes in conditions would be outside assistance though.
  10. Needs to be available to everyone, so if you were un-friended it would be outside assistance. It would also have to not be specific info for a boat or group of boats, I.e. It would need to be 'general info'.
  11. What's it matter how long he, or any of us, anchor for? I can't believe the Council have the time or resources to worry about this. I hate to think what it's cost to bring proceedings to the various courts.
  12. Its funny you mention that Chloe, I do have a fondness for Havana Club, developed on a trip in Cuba (that also involved sailing). It didn't seem to matter how many people were in the round, the barman would always use a whole bottle regardless of the number of glasses...
  13. Sorry to interrupt the salacious rum talk Auckland Council, Mr Len Brown, has made a statement that they (Auckland Council) wont appeal the High Court decision saying the resource consents were wrong. What fascinates me about this statement is, all along, he was saying its nothing to do with Council, its all POAL, and Council can't control what they do - its all quote "out of his hands" - funny change of tune all of a sudden. And now for the clanger - Ports of Auckland have not said they wont appeal the decision. This looks like PR snow job - Ports of Auckland are the only body tha
  14. Boom! Court orders resource consents granted for the ports extensions be set aside. Judge concludes that the way the consents were put was unlawful. Ports of Auckland broke down the total work of extending the wharfs into multiple small consents, so that one consent application by itself would not need to be publicly notified. This is a bit like applying to build a motorway, but saying you will only excavate 50 m2 at a time, so as to not need an earthworks consent - completely underhanded and deceitful behavior by Ports of Auckland, and now declared illegal The interesting thing n
  15. Is it not the bow section of the amma that came off Groupama 2 attempting the Jules Verne, that blew apart off of Dunedin the other year? Colours are the same, looks to be mildly sexy carbon construction, and the shape and profile also seem to match. Do I win a bottle of rum? Edit - doh - didn't see the link under the photos - photos are too big to see anything on IE.
  16. Now now IT, When I made the equivalent statement about just letting guys do as they want and letting them worry about the consequences, I upset all sorts of people on here. That was in relation to the 3 guys that got lost and ran out of petrol the day after buying their new boat. So what is it, are we happy with self determination and personal responsibility, or do we need the state and bureaucrats to protect us from ourselves?
  17. That grouper looks like a bush pig.
  18. IT, how much was the flexi solar panel? Any other details? Being on a mooring, its beyond me what you are all on about eWoF's for (i.e. hasn't occurred to me what I'd use shore power for), but wouldn't mind upgrading our solar charging system, perhaps then I could leave the fridge running so its cold when I get to the boat...
  19. On the Desert Rd analogy, wanting the RC to take responsibility for your safety is like stepping in front of a truck crossing the road, getting killed, then complaining to Auckland Transport for not keeping you safe. It's all about personal responsibility. It would appear that personal responsibility is going much the same way as common sense, I.e. Not so common anymore...
  20. Skipper's decision to race. Skipper is responsible for the boat and crew. Besides, even if they abandon the race mid race, all the boats are still on the water. Just because they stop racing doesn't make it any safer once you are caught out. it comes down to preparedness and competency then...
  21. How many user names are we allowed now anyway?
  22. What Chris Dickson actually said was as a young kid, he used to sail dinghies in the harbour, now it is too dangerous to do that, being to let kids sail small boats in the area around the wharfs and general vicinity. He also made comment of other water users, being paddle boarders, not being able to get around the extended container wharf, as the currents are too strong, and there are rips and eddies etc. The area along Tamaki Drive / Judges bay is popular with various water users other than just yatchies, being waka ima, paddle boarders, kayakers etc, but that is full blocked now by the ext
  23. AM good to hear you took the time to watch it on TV and then to post about it on here. It was really refreshing to see so many people out standing up for something they feel important, with real boat names in the public arena, rather than our imaginary names and inconsequential posts on here... Each one of those boats on the water and people on the wharf are standing up to be counted, regardless of if there were 80 or 500.
