    Boat rage

I'm actually interested in what the law says, if someone chases you down and assaults you, are you allowed to whack the f*&%ker back, or just stand there and be assaulted? Given the provocation by the guy that has been arrested, I'm not seeing any cause for concern by the lady with the oar. I'm sure that faced with the same provocation, many here would have physically assaulted the guy in response... (or at least on the oar to connect first time)

    Boat rage

There was one aggressor there. One guy got off his boat, got in his dinghy and chased someone else down, operated his boat dangerously, rammed another boat. The lady didn't pick the oar up until after that, after she told him she had kids on her boat. I'm gobsmacked you guys have an issue with that? From RNZ, he has been charged with assault and operating a boat dangerously... There is clear evidence he did both. So why do you think the lady should be charged with something? for being assaulted? A 58-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a case of boat rage in the

    Boat rage

Just looks like it is the guy that flipped out and ran around dangerously in his boat, threatening people and damaging property. Otherwise or wouldn't have said 58 yr old male...

  6. Just for reference, here is the list of gearbox options with the beta, basically any brand and ratio there is: https://www.betamarineengine.com/gearboxes Exhaust options https://www.betamarineengine.com/optional-exhausts And any other option you may want, shallow sump, PTO, remote oil filter, calorifer, control panels, engine feet, alternators etc https://www.betamarineengine.com/options-and-accessories The Beta's are designed and targeted at the retrofit market...
  7. This was becoming an issue at the dinghy dock at the Kawau Boating Club the other day. Very pleasant first world problem to deal with.
  8. I have recently installed a Beta 35 and I'm very happy with it. I can also vouch for Andy at the Engine Room, knowledgeable and good to deal with. Glow plugs are not an issue. We weren't pre heating at all, and only had trouble in winter. 8-10 secs is all you need. Beta pricing (when I purchased) was moon beams ahead of Volvo and Yanmar. In the context you are asking, the Beta is designed for retro-fits. You can literally have any gearbox you want, from any supplier, fitted to the engine and included in the warranty. Beta also do a sail drive, and target you with it, people replacing Yanm
  9. I had a situation off Gulf Harbour the other day when a guy in a yacht came out, wasn't keeping a look out (wasn't on deck), and needed to give way to me. He didn't cause he wasn't on deck. I went behind his stern close enough to exchange words and suggest he keeps a lookout, esp just off the marina where its moderately busy. But here is the thing. He didn't hit me, I didn't hit him. We both went on our way. I don't think any of that justifies more regulation. Remember, there are plenty of people with drivers licenses that still drive like a w^&#$@r...

Well, he's fronted up, explained himself and apologised for his behaviour. Full credit for that. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/124142548/i-lost-my-cool-tairua-man-speaks-out-about-boat-rage-incident
  11. Thanks Tamure, we were a long way down the path of swapping the current through hull transducer out on the grids, then remembered we had this transom mounted one, so I'm keen to try it out first. The current transducer has a fair bit of epoxy around it, so there is a risk of trouble in moving it. Would be a sub optimal outcome if we can't get the new one in and sealed before the tide comes back...
  12. I'm about to do this. Was going to try this stuff out as a bed, Knead It epoxy filler stuff. We've used it for other jobs on the boat to great success. https://www.bunnings.co.nz/selleys-110g-knead-it-steel-polymer-repair-system_p0239197 Boat is DD kauri with glass. We already have a transom mounted transducer (not used) from when we brought a chart plotter. My through hull transducer is packing up (20 yr old navman), so I'm going to try it out. Don't have much to loose, and plenty to save. I only need depth for anchoring, so depth in 20 m or less. I'm the worlds most environmental f

    Maxpower suncover

We made a cover of sorts for our new engine instruments. The basics are a piece of plastic card and some strategically placed velcro. Holds the cover over the instruments when on the mooring, preventing UV damage etc. On our set up, the engine instruments are beside the nav instruments, so we've actually got the velcro on the other instrument covers, so we don't have to look at velcro patches while using the boat.

It may appear that way, possibly. I don't think our criminal justice system is very good, and prison tends to train / breed criminals. I think substantially more should be spent on prisoners. Mental health, counselling, basic life skills like being able to read, drivers licenses for all (for free), vocational training, and that prisoners should be treated like humans. The punishment of prison is the deprivation of liberty, it shouldn't be living in a scotty sh*t hole. Reoffending rates are way too high and more should be done about that, for the wider good of society. But at the same time

    Boat rage

Are you referring to him making a mistake when he bet the security guard to death and crushed his skull? or that he made a mistake again and got violent with a lady and some kids out boating? Its not clear from your post... And here is me thinking I'm on the lefty poof tree hugging vegetarian end of the spetrum when it comes to law and order. I guess, based on the justifiable homicide thread, you guys all think its OK to go and kill someone every time a wave hits your boat. I don't know, perhaps if you don't like waves hitting your boat, you shouldn't go out on the water?

    Boat rage

I don't know, if my kids were on my boat and he came and rammed it at speed, started nutting off and being aggressive towards me, I'd be fairly happy he was in jail and not at a boat ramp near my family. The lady is a deputy principal. I thought she handled it well, started off calm and reasonable. Only picked the oar up when the boat ran at her (and her kids) at speed. Apparently there is an employment investigation going on. That is totally unfair. There are ways to handle / communicate disagreements. Scaring kids until they cry is not one of them. Causing property damage and dire

What boat are you racing on, and does the Suburban Reptile feel like a jilted lover? Not that I know, but does it resemble a bad hair cut?

That would explain the claim of $1000 damage to his boat, probably from a past incident. He spotted her and chased it up. Still, a bit of a hillbilly way to deal with a grievance.

What are the predictions for exceeding the wind range today? Racing or no racing, or waiting for several hours then no racing?
  22. Having done some percussion hydrography in the past, my missus always pesters me when we are going into a new bay / point, "are there any rocks here". I'm getting a bit sick of it, so am turning that around to get her to check the chart, get familiar with our geographical position on the plotter and check herself. Two eyes are better than one, and I wont get the nagging...
  23. I think if you need to be asking questions like that, it would be easier and lower risk to get an off the shelf item. The risk part being melting something after having done all the work. The Engine Room have a range of elbows available. They are the Beta agent. I don't have any pictures handy, but they have high rise elbows, cross overs (going from one side of the engine to the other), High rise with a cross over, standard elbows, slight rise with an offset, etc. Several options are made out of alloy, so they don't cost moonbeams. They have shop drawings for all, so you can suss the geo
  24. Lees marinised most of those old Izuzu's (we had one). They may have knowledge that would help. We had them refurb our water pump. That said, they would need to fabricate an exhaust elbow anyway. But they may have the knowledge to make it work first time. That set up you had certainly does look fairly random. Lees are still operating, I get mixed up if it is Lees Engineering, or the outfit that sells engines, but contact the first one you find on google and they'd put you onto the right people.
  25. Gee KM, we know its taking a while to finish off the reptile, but surely you'd want to put the keel on it before trying to race it again?
