  1. I think it is because Volvo would have to be the most common installation to come across, that due to share numbers, you are going to come across more problems. As IT said, it is usually the additional parts for marinisation that cause issues on the engines themselves. And that tends to be across the board on all makes of engines. The only issue I have with Volvo is the price tag on parts.
  2. I said check oil level in a much earlier post. Too much oil in the Box can cause big problems. The box will overheat badly and that can then cause damage to the clutch cones. Although I have never seen an engine do this before, I wouldn't say it can't. Maybe if the box is getting too hot, it is causing something weird to happen with the clutch grabbing. I assume it has the official Volvo Oil in the box. If it is some poorer quality and it is getting outside it's comfort range, the Oil may not be doing the lubricating job it needs to. The Oil level must always be checked with the box in gear
  3. BOI is correct. It is simply not possible. Injector timing goes out by a tooth and the engine will run really ruff. Two teeth and it will come to a stop. It is really that precise. Having just had the sound fixed in my computer, I had another listen. Firstly, it is not a sharp crack like detonation or something hitting something. It has a slightly longer duration than a sharp crack. Like either something rubbing as it hits or the escape of Gas under pressure. interestingly, if you do a quick math calc. Lets say the engine is idling at 650RPM. 650 divided by 60 is 10.8 revs per second. So
  4. Hahaha, good one Aleana. 😁👍
  5. And hence why I am saying it is not engine. It is far too regular, yet outside anything that is cyclic on the engine. Engine faults are going to be either random or if regular, will have much higher repetition frequency to coincide with engine RPM. This fault is regular as stated at about every 12th rotation, but far too far apart repetition rate to be anything engine related. Only problem is, the Gearbox and sail drive is all geared far to fast for this as well. Thought. Do you have an Alternator charge controller? Could something be electrically timed that it loads up ALT momentary and
  6. The thing is with Camshaft, Cranks, Chains, Cogs etc etc and any other solid mechanical timed mechanisms, if they fail in anyway, the issue is not intermittent. They all cause major and even catastrophic failures that would abruptly bring the engine to a halt. Or at best, the ignition of the Fuel would be compromised and result in a smoky cylinder or two or more. From my own experience, here are a list of things I found over the years. Maybe it might help someone one day. Broken lug on Camshaft = ruff running through out rev range. Smoking engine. Continual clacking noise that increases f
  7. It isn't anything to do with the engine. Forget Injectors or timing. If the exhaust is clean, then there are no firing problems. Simple as that. Anything mechanically wrong with the engine that could cause this would only make the engine run worse and likely the noise would become much faster and louder when you up the RPM. What I recommend you check is firstly that the gearbox Oil is at the correct level. If low, it could be a clutch cone grabbing maybe. Secondly, check that the Gear cable is properly adjusted to sit in neutral. Not just about trying to engage. The engine is being moved o
  8. The Mechanic needs his rear projecting big end kicked. That is NOT a Fuel issue. He proved that by testing each cylinder. Air would have been bled out. It's none of the things you have suggested . Fault like those would not go away at a higher RPM. Plus a cylinder not firing is going to cause smoke issues. Rest assured that if the internals are making such a sound, then the fault is going to make itself very apparent soon. However, rest assured it is not the engine causing the problem. In fact, I suggest it is external to the engine. The engine movement looks like it is being pushed aroun
  9. OK, perhaps I need to go back and re read all this. As I said, I read a few posts and so I guess I may not understand the argument here. I had thought some were arguing about the Quota's being leased out. I 100% agree that any catch should not be dumped. It needs to be accounted for, brought ashore and Sold and I was of the understanding that this was now what indeed had to be done. Certainly, any by catch must be recorded in type of fish and where caught. This is accounted for by Fisheries as to what is happening to other Fish stocks. We do have a pretty good system here in NZ. That is
  10. As I said, Quota is Quota. It doesn't matter who leases or owns it. It entitles the user to catch a set amount or certain size per year. Full stop! once Quota is met. What is allowed and not allowed does not come down to the person operating the Quota. That is set by Fisheries. So if I buy Quota from you Harrytom, I am bound by the restrictions of that Quota. As to size and quantity that can be taken, that is a different argument and should be kept separate from the Quota itself. The Quota is just the license. I agree about the problem with by catch. It is a big problem. But once again, Quot
  11. I have come into this argu.....I mean discussion a little late. I have skip read through the posts, so forgive me if I have got the wrong point of the argument. Quota is Quota. It is a limit to what can be caught and sold. It does not matter who owns or leases Quata, Only a set amount of Fish in the managed area can be caught. Because of this, new Technology has been introduced over the years so as the quota of species can be caught as efficiently as possible. It is expensive gear, often complex and many times , very large. So only the big operators can use it. That means it is better for
  12. Apparently that is the case. They followed the track they went out on, but the tide or wind had changed to cause the Barge to swing around on her Mooring line and sit over top of the track they were following. So at full speed in total darkness they smacked into the vessel. I am surprised only one died. He went right through the Windscreen of the Boat.
  13. Have a look here. https://cruiseguide.co.nz/outer-sounds/okiwi-bay Go to map settings and turn on the toggles for the Ramp and the Moorings and it will all make sense as to what the Boat driver has done. He has straight lined it from the Open Ocean. Likely made the Boat ramp the target on the GPS and aimed directly for it and hasn't seen that he would clip the outer area of the mooring field. The field is a long way from the end of the bay where the ramp is. They must have hit the Barge at full speed.
  14. I love the way they used words in those days.
  15. That may have changed IT. The cost to insure for Ocean passages is ruffly as much as the cost of a Boat. This is due to the Market falling and cost of Insurance rising. Unless it is a case of Insurance being cheaper if you have qualified skipper I guess. Anyway, Hence why it is becoming much more common to put a Yacht on a Ship now. But as seen above, with cost around the $100K mark, the Boat needs to be worth the cost of putting it on a Ship.
  16. Assuming it is all ligit......another angle to consider. For the NZ Buyer, they would want to be very confident in the Crew. There is no insurance for sailing across the Big Blue. If by some chance it all goes pear shape and the Crew has to bail, then you would want to believe that they did everything in their power to keep the Boat afloat and only bailed because they really had too. Otherwise one would always have in the back of their mind, did they really try. The Crew not owning the Boat themselves may not give them as much incentive to try as hard as the someone that forked out the big coi
  17. gantmc, thanks for the insight. That is the first time I have heard detailed info on him. I long suspected something along those lines. It is really Sad. And if it isn't the case for Shane, for at least someone Homeless, it ends in a Death because of neglect and then Community goes oooh aaaahh, the Gvt has to do something and maybe even a new Gvt gets voted in, but nothing actually changes. I do understand how People can make fun of Shane, because they don't know or understand his background and for others like him. People only see someone that looks more like a "grifter" ( I think the ter
  18. I had wondered what happened to him. Not the best choice of places to try and Winter over in. I wouldn't believe a word of what he said in that article. It's pretty obvious by now that the guy has a serious mental issue and frankly, he needs help in that respect. It is possible he has been offered a Home and he has refused it. Interestingly, most of the Homeless had been removed off the streets and given Housing during the Covid lockdown. But many of them have now moved back out to the streets again. They prefer to be on the streets because there are too many "rules" when they are in a Home

    BEP regulator

Are we talking about an Alternator voltage regulator? Is there a model number?

    Diesel bug

I my view, in nearly every tank installation, there is a design flaw. The Fuel line does not come from or go down to the very bottom of the tank. The idea is that it then does not pick up water. That is just fine and dandy if there is another way to empty the tank of water on the bottom. As said in above posts, the Water is actually where the Bug lives. The Bug can be either Algae or Bacteria or both even. Both live in the water. Algae does not need Diesel to live on. Bacteria feeds on the Fuel. Very simply, remove water and keep it out and you will never have a problem. (unless you introduc
  21. That would make an interesting day for the Pilot. I wonder if Rigger was at the Helm....(figuratively speaking, realising the Pilot doesn't actually helm these Ships)
  22. Biased views, just like Racism come about from ignorance. Biased views of the Gvt or Police or whomever comes about in exactly the same way. Maybe the evidence was tampered with. Maybe it wasn't. We don't know and we should not jump to silly conclusions based on the past. That is paranoia. Yes we need to use the past to learn from and one can only hope that we have used those past situations and have seen improvements. If we don't, then we are no different than the idiots in the US that believe they have the right to own assault rifles to protect themselves against their Gvt. The SW evid
  23. At the moment, it is speculation. I am not saying it was not purposeful, but proving the evidence was tampered with is not going to be easy. However, incompetence, well yes and that is the loophole in which they are using to bring this case back to trial. The evidence was not handled in the way that it should have been under normal lab prceedures. We should not paint all in such positions as corrupt. There is always going to be situations where someone may well be. But if we just give in to a view that all Police are corrupt, then we are in a worse situation. It brings about anarchy an
  24. What evidence was planted? If you are referring to the Plastic bag and Olivia's hairs suddenly being found, that has not been proven as tampering. It is only speculation.
