  1. Built Glendowie by John ........ cant remember yet, but owned for 20plus years by the late great Trevor Coubray a wonderful and hilarious guy -Mooringologist then commander of Okahu Bay hardstand and friend of yachtsmen everywhere. He took the flathead ford ten out and replaced it with the second hand Bukh 20 driving backwards through belts !! Did she come with the Merv Seefont clinker dinghy that Trev sold her with and was still on board ten years ago at Westpark?
  2. Looked like a Tourism Auckland promotion

Re the big guys going this way: some years ago at Sanctuary Cove I had a look at the first First 30 of the current shape in Aussie came back here all excited costings were cheap looked great then did some figures, similar sizing to an 88 all good a lot cheaper than an 88 all good, 60% heavier than an 88 all bad, in a hull that was designed to be light and frisky big production polyester boatbuilding just couldnt do it . If built by Cooksons that yacht could sparkle, but done by Bene -well the videos prove it downwind in a gale just mushing along where an 88 or Ross 30 in particular would be se
  5. BP it is a Victron monocrystalline from Lusty and Blundell
  6. Put a victron monitor and bigger batteries in before xmas, now very relaxed about house loads and amazed how much a small good quality solar panel generates
  7. Yes have seen several dreadful attempts lately, but the Boat Coat guy seems to do it properly, and have more experience.

Ply is the one material that with WEST epoxy can be fixed and repaired as good as new, certainly in the case of Pivers and a lot of early Spencers better than new if they were bonded with Aerolite.

Dont forget the RM970 - as the hull is built out of goodstuff she could be built in Kiwiland - I cant believe no one has tried under licence to produce them, yes yes I know the hull and decks are currently under 20% of a yacht cost, however deals could be done. Just imagine new yachts built in NZ how radical

Now that is really cool, almost enough to tempt me out of the kauri log, not sure how she would go on the wind though..
  14. Careful round Kelly Tarltons now, the only moorings with decent draft are out by the wavescreen
  15. Doubt it, he has been building in Devonport all that time since doing his time at Gladdens in Milford.
  16. She is well built and if rigged as designed with a modern lug will sail exceedingly well, of course has a modern Yanmar for docking purposes a true trade wind machine . I just hope that because local riggers dont understand what a lugger can do they dont try and change the design. I have personally designed and built a carbon lugger and was astounded at the controllability and performance possibilities with this rig, often people see you and think that is a quaint gaffer- till you sail by planing....
  17. Thats the old Waitemata, this one Wakatere? has jets and foils , one big one between the hulls and smaller trim ones aft, one wonders if they knew they had hit something why they didnt stop, for there seemed to be no question it was her from early on.

    Pilot boat

What has the new pilot boat hit ? Quick haul out and a lot of Police taking photos...
  19. They are great fun to build, though the liver takes a hammering during the friday night -"oh I wouldnt have done it like that sessions" with visitors, there is a house in Orakei with many marks on the beams downstairs -one for each bottle of red wine.
  20. Those skylarks are all takes on the original nutshell, designed by Joel White. Unfortunately like the local copy dont quite look as good. For our Nutshells we did a bit of FAA and reduced the thickness of most bits knowing that they would be glassed with 6oz . So built out of Gaboon ply the hull glassed without paint is under 20kg . they are meant to be 7'7" long -though mine ended up as 7' 8" . Because of the hull shape she stays dryish inside except for extreme conditions, I have seen her clear the water in 45 knots on the nose but never flips, likewise with our keels they tow straight
  21. Still using my nutshell pram, ply glassed, it has to tow in all conditions carry the whole crew and sail around the bay for social visits as well, was amused this year to hear a youngster exclaim as I approached the dinghy dock off Lidgard house -hey look at that rowing a wooden boat -old school !
  22. Hey BP how long is your tubeless RiB and what brand was it?
  23. Running the normal Tenob ss bracket with the double up spring set for an 8hp long shaft Honda, its well balanced however I do use a block on the release handle, just pull the string and shift motor to required position.
  24. As an Aucklander, I have to say we have dodged it again about 5 knots and all the cranes still working around the viaduct..
