    Buying lead

Scrap lead not such a good idea, the balance of tin, antimony etc has to be right under water.
  4. Well MB as a payer of three lots of Yachting NZ levys I do object to a high performance centre being allocated most of the money for just the Olympic sailors (a very small number of highly sponsored people) - though when you look at the latest funding round you can see why YNZ put such emphasis on them. Dont get me wrong I have nothing against dinghy sailing, and some of the people at YNZ are great supporting the grass roots of yachting Kim Admore springs to mind, however they do appear to have forgotten the silent majority of us who pay each year - for what exactly? Clubs are administering th
  5. Ed you miss my point, yes we didnt have a long distance race, but these boats were all out there in the NZ fleet some racing some not and given time we could have rounded up a heap more, even the walkers coming down to the viaduct in the afternoon were heard to exclaim that isnt the real Rainbow 11 or the real Waianiwa is it ? As they looked past the assembled Volvo fleet in port, so people do remember when yachting caught the imagination of the public back then. Also you missed the great Rosco on the lidgard IMP. And that scow being mother ship to sundance was helmed by a well known sailmaker
  6. Indeed this has been David Abercrombies baby all along and turning his back on Orakei and wasting money on PR spin needs to be sheeted home to him.
  7. Undoubtedly BP, some of the best quality racing that I have done in recent years was in the One Ton Cup revisited two years ago, widely disparate boats well handicapped and every dog had his day, oh and they were by todays standards small cheap local non planing boats. Really made us all think - and the fleet was populated heavily by sailmakers or ex sailmakers there because they wanted to be, rather than for business.....
  8. ETNZ challenger for this years Americas cup is in the drink -just waiting for some breeze...... Ben Ainslie sailed his one yesterday in Bermuda
  9. yes watching last years island race start I was struck by how few normal Dad and Mum Kiwi boats were going, there is no place for them amongst the big boat race fleet anymore, never mind how time poor we all are, even the racey small boats were populated by sailmakers and boatbuilders who kinda had to be there.

    New prop

Without dancing all around the issue again, as all angles seem to have been discussed, if you can reach rated RPM ie 3600 with a clean bottom then the box will not be overloaded . And more important you will not be running in lug mode, thus allowing full horsepower to be available if ever required and avoiding damage to the engine (premature carbonning of exhaust elbow etc etc.) And the prop will run quieter with more tip clearance 15% was always rule of thumb and what classification agencies use as absolute minimum, however on a lot of yachts we sneak it down to nearer 10% depending on hull
  11. Open ocean should be the cheapest and IT is right about the electric side, best quality seem to be the Parker Village Marine with their own membranes and machined out of billet titanium components.
  12. Yes agree about good value, have done canals in the UK from Chester and in and out of Wales great fun. Two years ago did a week on the Norfolk Broads once again great value with travel and accomodation looked after. Pays to research who you are chartering off though, both times we felt very lucky when looking at some of the other boats. Now investigating the French canals for this year...
  13. motorbike has a better understanding of this one than some here as do I, the damage has been done
  14. Row a wooden dinghy like me! Or use a Torqeedo outboard
  15. There seems to be a common lack of understanding about wakes, a rather large boy and his girlfriend? went close past me in his RIB whilst we were anchored in Smelting House sunday evening , they were at maximum displacement speed ie creating the biggest wake possible , he saw me shaking my head so when returning from the club came past at maximum speed (planing) to try and annoy me - causing no wake at all
  16. It appears that Bogan has hit the nail on the head....
  17. One wonders what is the name of the complainants boat.......
  18. Yes XXXX does not do dangerous things in my experience, he was racing back to Auckland on Sunday I watched him start.
  19. Something wrong with this post, not sure that it should be left up......

    New prop

yes I would be looking for 6 knots ish at 3000 and being able to get near 3600 as she sinks into her own hole going a little quicker (gives you reserve for weather conditions)
