    unitary plan

Not sure what it all means and I don't think I've got the time (55 days full time) to find out before it's adopted on the 19 August... http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/82487719/aucklands-unitary-plan-would-take-55-days-to-read
  2. Some very good advice there. You sound short of experience and cash. Both are required for safe coastal voyaging. The other danger is I can imagine you trying to encourage some "crew" to join you. A lack of experience on their part will render them blind to the risks they are taking and the whole thing would have too higher chance of ending in a tragedy. Such an event happened not so long ago: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/10045483/Catastrophic-event-cause-of-yacht-foundering People tackling what you are proposing would typically have a good budget behind them, time to pick the weath
  3. I'm all for learning from other's experiences but while there are virtually zero facts known, this is nothing more than offensive dribble with no benefit whatsoever. People are trying to deal with the fact they have lost family and mates here - unbelievable.....
  4. Starter motor on wrong side for a Ford?
  5. Yes I tend to think what was the downside of setting off the EPIRB? A machine goes bing in Wellington, and with the details attached they match it to the phone call. They now have confirmation that the location they had interpreted from the phone call is / isn't accurate. If they loose cell phone comms (battery / water / coverage) they still have something solid to use all for a the cost of a few electrons and perhaps a phone call or two It's not like he fired it off because his cat was stuck up a tree and in fact he was able to get home on his own...
  6. I recall my father using one of these on a new engine box and I think it was a Formica product but it's been a few years. We've also got a heap of tables with them at work and looking at the charts, they were produced around 1990 if that helps.
  7. My understanding it they don't sting and inject venom like a wasp or bee but they are covered in a Mucus that is toxic. Regardless they are a nasty piece of work and loosing a hook and some nylon rather than getting too close is excellent value in my book.
  8. Epic blog of a rebuild here - http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?127345-Following-the-Pied-Piper&highlight=pied+piper Real shame a lot of the photos "fell off".
  9. Re the 5 short blasts - just what intentions could a concrete wharf have that a master would be unsure of?
  10. Page 2 of this PDF explains it: https://at.govt.nz/media/1144860/auckland_harbour_restricted_areas-july-2015.pdf
  11. Saw a photo / video on line here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11591346 Looks like a well loved H28? Hull looks a lot cleaner than most in the area...

    Gearbox oil level

Surely a gearbox that is so sensitive to oil level and offers no means to check said oil level in a typical (and within spec) installation is not fit for purpose. Seems completely daft - it's 2016 for goodness sake.
  13. How could you be proud to work in and be part of a sector which is so stuffed up this sort of thing can actually happen?

    Window tape.

All for supporting local companies and that stuff but looks like someone might be taking the micky to me: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Y7H1WM/ref=biss_dp_t_asn
  15. allowing inferior antifoulings and huge costs for cleaning will only promote fouled boats and less boaties.... which in turn will reduce their return on marina income You're right there - I fall into that camp still kicking tyres at the thought but one of the biggest detractions of eventually owning a keeler is the on-going hassle with keeping the bum clean. It just seems to be getting more and more complex and costly. I grew up in the days of Jet Black Anti foul and tidal grids. Now it seems you need a waste disposal facility and a university qualified application specialist operating und

    Pin Stripes

Given the cost I'd store what's left over in a dry place out of the sun and it'll last for years - always handy.

    Pin Stripes

Give these guys a call: http://www.decrastrip.co.nz/ You want to ensure you're using Cast vinyl, not Calendered.
  19. Some news on the Waitematawoodys site:
  20. Cool - it's an interesting thread. I'm certainly looking at the prices of some of the older keelers and mulling the thought "perhaps one day" so to watch someone go through the process is great.
  21. You've come this far - do it once do it right. Patch up jobs are more often than not a waste of time and money. They're worth less than nil to a new owner and deliver no peace of mind while you own it.
