  1. Beware of the rock just outside Home Bay, Motutapu! Check your charts? I have seen an Elliot 1050 hit that in a SSANZ race a few years ago. Didn't get stuck for ages like Dilemma did yesterday though.

  3. Glad they have found her. There is a protest hearing on Monday: https://www.rnzys.org.nz/sailing-protests-2/
  4. Wow look at the entries: 15 Young 88s, 14 Piedies, 2 Olympic gold medallists, a Volvo ocean race winner, and an America's cup designer!!
  5. Hungarian scam confirmed "The email scam which resulted in the payment to a fraudulent Hungarian bank account was immediately disclosed by [name redacted] to MBIE ([name redacted]) after its discovery and an assurance was given that ACE still had sufficient funds for the delivery of the Events, and that it would not be seeking any further financial assistance from the Hosts. "The fraud/theft was reported to the NZ Police who alerted the relevant international authorities with all appropriate steps being instigated through Kiwibank and Bell Gully, solicitors, to attempt to recover the
  6. In Whangaroa, the Boyd Gallery (general store) is closed. You can get water from the water buoy in the south eastern arm. Will need some small notes or coins to pay for that ($5). You can get diesel from the fishing wharf. Cheap meals at the gamefish club (next to the marina). Mangonui has provisions in the 4 Square (general store), good coffee and food at the cafe, a 100 year old kauri pub with a cockatoo at the bar, sadly no fuel, and smoked hapuka heads for only $3 at the famous fish and chip shop. Taipa has a petrol station a short walk from the beach.
  7. Apparently someone inside Team NZ doesn't like Dalton!
  8. Well, there is a good reason why faster boats usually start first. Let's hope this reversed order, and mass starts doesn't cause too much carnage! 😄

It is interesting that the researcher, LeopardSeals.org co-founder Dr Krista Hupman, thinks that the problem of dinghies being destroyed is caused by boaties: "It is the responsibility of boat owners to ensure their dinghies and fenders are pulled out of the water to prevent any damage." So can we no longer tie a dinghy behind our boat, or leave a fender hanging to prevent damage?
  10. In Mangonui, the best anchorage is off Butlers Point. Go up the main channel then turn left.
  11. Looks like at least 4 boats on their side, and one with a bent mast?
  12. Depends where you keep the boat, but shouldn't be compulsory to have insurance.
  13. Well there was no mast or sails visible on Saturday noontime. Maybe salvaged already?
  14. Regarding Shearer Rock buoy, old charts used to show a round buoy, plus an eastern cardinal mark in the same area. On the latest chart, the round buoy has gone, leaving just the East cardinal mark.
  15. That boat has 4 foils, as opposed to 3 on the AC75. Looks like there is probably some lead in the central 'keel', making the side foils lighter, removing the need to have human or electric grinders to control those.
  16. Thanks for that. In previous years there was only one combined NOR/SI. Looking forward to the SI's so we can find out where the start and finish lines are, what the starting order is, what colour flag we need to buy, and radio sched details, and what the divisions are.

More threats to Auckland's resident leopard seal after sunken dinghy Auckland's resident leopard seal has received more threats against her life after a dinghy sunk, off Herald Island, on Wednesday night. It is believed that an inflatable dingy that slowly sunk on Wednesday night was popped by Owha, prompting threats, including the use of a firearm. https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/300042182/more-threats-to-aucklands-resident-leopard-seal-after-sunken-dinghy

  19. Probably a good idea to follow the Yachting New Zealand Safety Regulations of Sailing 2017–2020 19.07 Navigation lights on all boats shall be fitted no lower than the height of the upper lifelines. https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/sites/default/files/2018-10/YNZ Safety Regulations of Sailing 17-20 (Final) (small).pdf https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/resources/yachting-new-zealand-safety-regulations-sailing-2017-2020
  20. Is there a typo in the Notice of Race? Lewmar Doyle Sails Short Course: Start passing Rangitoto Island (starboard), Shearers Rock Buoy (starboard), Haystack (Orapapa) Island, Motuihe Island (starboard), Browns Island (port), Motukorea Buoy (starboard) to the finish (approx. 39nm) Since it does not state which side to leave the Haystack, we can effectively ignore this mark of the course! 😉
  21. HMS Aotearoa arrives tomorrow. The navy has extended the wharf at Devonport by 50m for it. Vessel is 173m long, has 100 bunks, 15 knots speed, 8.4m draft. The watermakers can produce 100,000 litres fresh water per day. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300040365/hmnzs-aotearoa-navys-largest-ever-ship-finally-on-its-way-to-new-zealand
  22. Would it be possible to make a copy with a 3D printer?
  23. Shackleton's Captain is a good documentary about the kiwi Frank Worsley who saved Shackleton and his crew through good seamanship and navigation.
