  1. Lets just for a moment remove the fact that the boat involved was POAL Pilot boat. Lets say this was a 60ft Riveria with an owner / driver fanging it around North Head at 30 knts and took out a swimmer off Narrowneck Beach. If there was a complete vacuum of information as to the circumstances of that, would you start asking questions or wanting to know how the same fatality could be avoided in the future? Agree 100% there would be a lynching mob from this web site alone looking for his blood.
  2. From what I've head the pilot boat turned around and had a look for what it had hit. With maritine NZ for investigation. Will be an interesting one for sure. The boats GPS track is pretty clear.
  3. They cut the corner right? No one will get charged would be my guess.
  4. About time I say. There were simply so many clowns out and about on the water. Last week we had two occasions in the sounds where boats failed to give way, both times we had a chat to ask if they knew they were wrong and in both occasions had no idea about collision regs. And as for the clowns on jetskis using the interislander ferry wake don't get me started. The harbourmaster has been doing a good job here this year for a change.
  5. I use both, Masthead LED and one of those solar lights set on a yellow or white so I can diferentiate my boat in a crowded anchorage when coming home pissed in the dark without a life jacket
  6. My experience with them has been less than helpful also. Their backup on a product I purchased off them was useless. In the end I had to ring the supplier myself and sort the issue. They seem to direct import a lot of stuff bypassing the local agent/distributor. Personally I also choose to get bitten once and then shop elsewhere also. Lucky for us there are some very good and reputable suppliers out there. Of course if you want fishing tackle and bbq's well Marine Deals are probably a good choice.
  7. Open to offers, comes in bag to store on deck or in locker, no pump or oars. Goes really well with 15HP engine. Located in Christchurch can arrange freight anywhere, condition is good, age 2014 Has been patched professionally. See photo.
  8. The photo only shows one pier. There are two more planned for installation http://www.teanamarina.co.nz/marina will show you the final layout. Can't wait to get our berth, should be ready by late Feb.
  9. Yip with you BP out there to get away from the noise. Ours is off most of the time. 10 Years it be a dead technology would be my guess. Smartphone close but Rum and Coke closer....
  10. But who actually has their VHF on these days? Not many do in my mind easier to reach for the Iphone.
  11. Really does anyone really use it? I think most people would simply pull the Epirb pin instead?
  12. Yeah we were away this season, I just solo sailed it back to NZ, currently in Opua. We did Tonga and Fiji this year. Probably not me in 2011/12 was sailing in the US then I think
  13. Sailing in Fiji with my daughter in about 4 knots of wind.
  14. Just tether or get a second sim card on your plan to chuck in your ipad. We do both, data costs are dropping all the time, and coverage around the Gulf is pretty good. You can also get an unlimited data plan on your phone now. Not sure but I think if you take that sim and chuck it in your ipad you have a pretty good solution. Means you can do most stuff remotely inc. watching Netflix with no worries about data. I have this plan on my phone will take the sim out and throw it in the Ipad and see if it works.
  15. Feel sorry for the poor bugger so close! I was talking last night on the sat phone to my bro who is in that system a little further north and it was quite nasty. I'm sailing my yacht back from Fiji will be clearing Friday this week all going well with the Weather. I hope this does not happen to me!!

  18. There is a whole industry created around H&S. Our business H&S costs have increased 500% in the last 3 years. And they will increase further. For small business wanting to work with big business you have to do it. It's just you don't have the opportunity always to recover this in your revenue as the economies of scale don't apply to small business. There is an army of H&S leaches running around making money out of this bloody stupid in often cases rules. Take the Justice Precinct project in CHCH - inductions, endless H&S meetings, SOP's, everything done right BUT sti

  20. If I disconnect the external antenna on ours and try and use it I loose 2 bars of reception. Makes a huge difference. However I used one the other week on a cat that was installed with the internal antenna 'looking' through the front glass window and it worked ok. Probably best to try and see if you are worried about the cost, if not run with the antenna.
  21. External aerial, absolute must especially in a seaway. Although on a cat you might just get lucky if you have a clear pathway to the sky.
  22. IT rest of my sails are Norths and well over 20,000 on them just done the main and went Norths expensive but nice sail. Quite a number of the Doyle sails up in the tropics same story.
  23. Sounds about right Rawhide, the way sails seem to last these days about 6 years for a headsail. Just had our 6 year old No3 start to blow apart de-lamination beginning sails are not what they used to be. Won't be rolling with Doyle again, sail has maybe 5000 miles on it.
  24. I've had both lavac and jabsco, lavac way better, jabsco with kids on board = nightmare. Also the spares kits for them are quite expensive almost better to buy a new toilet, approx $100 more than the big spares kit. Remember don't over tighten the pump bolts or you will strip them which = toilet fail. The older Jabsco model is better and lasts longer than the current one in my opinion.
  25. Thanks Zozza, perfect, must have been tired last night but all I could see was how to prepare RC Car Carbon parts. I'll try the Porsche front bumber next get rid of those stone chips
