In the previous round ETNZ were embarrasingly sluggish in the pre start but had good speed during the race and recovered well only just missing out on the final Yesterday I watched the first two starts closely, they were much better positioned in the initial charge for the line (an improvement) yet the boat still looks sluggish in that final acceleration when they are all jammed together, so still an inability to "Pull The Trigger"as the commentator says. Unfortunately they were not able to climb the placings in the race as per Rnd 2. Slingsby seems to have another gear in the same space and just accelerates off the line like a bullet no matter where he is positioned I'm damned if I know how he does it but its remarkable , its like he is in a different boat to the rest of the fleet. Noting that 'next season' starts in 4 weeks time in Perth. I guess the sports-washing money outweighs logic and a good event. The kids, especially Miss 12, has been super excited counting down to the final... almost fell asleep watching it. Brings back memories of the Americas Cup. To quote Burling, Anticipation isn't mentioned in the rules. That, and with 12 boats doing between 50 & 80 km/hr on a course measured in hundreds of meters (as in a very small and tight course), I think they have enough on keeping track of where the boats currently are, without trying to guess where they might go as well. What is mentioned is boats changing course are obliged to give other boats room to keep clear (which clearly did not happen), and, the stand on vessel is required to hold a steady course (to allow the give way vessel a chance to keep clear). The Swiss never sailed in a straight line post gybe, they had a substantial rate of turn, turning up into the Blackfoils. It is beyound me how the Swiss aren't penalised. They did not avoid the collision. Noting that even the Umpires agree Burling has low culpability, as they reduced the season points penalty from -8 to -3. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Frank 217 Posted January 17 Share Posted January 17 From the post race interviews Ashby, Slingsby ,Grael,Robertson, Burling and Schneiter expressed general anxiety about near misses at speed and the craziness of increasingly competitive boats all jamming into the first mark on a tight course. Burling in particular appeared shaken noting that the Bow of the Swiss boat missed him by a metre. I guess a bit of crash n bash is a good blood spectacle for the promoters and fans but to me these boats are not suited to being used as bumper boats , way too fragile. Let's hope that there isn't a fatality at some stage then the organizers would certainly feel the blowtorch on the Y fronts as Peter Mont-commentary would say . 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
