The squadrons payoff to let Dalton take his cup has finally been officially announced, ten new Elliott 7's

This was trumpeted way back as being a legacy payment that would keep giving to the youth programme, but instead appears to be a one off, to replace the boats that were Due for a ten year refit .

Stumbled onto coverage this morning on TV3. Some good background info about boats n crew, authorised spying etc. The actual sailing/racing was sub par, win start win race… at least graphics used knots.

Yup three now have it on demand.

Also available on the stuff.co.nz website.

Processional is the best description for the moment.  Prestart wrestling, then whoever leads over the start line wins.

It better improve.

Tried to find something on YouTube this morning.  Gave up after a few minutes.

Well every race in its entirety is on YouTube BP, maybe get one of those kids to give you a hand for 11 seconds! :-)

I found it, but the edited highlights are frustrating,  the commentary pathetic and so far the racing has been boring. I discover I'm simply not invested in who wins. Each to their own.

not real yachts, pretty sure I could win a race if I won the start, non tactical racing.

Ah got ya, thought you meant you looked for it & gave up. Yes even as a fan of fast hi tech yachts, the racing leaves a lot to be desired!

I watched day 4 on youtube, and tbh the best part is the pre-start where there is a bit of jostling for position. After that it has all the excitement of apparent wind racing i.e bang the corners and follow the leader with uphill and downhill looking pretty much the same. Quite a bit of commentary about the skippers mental composure and heartrate, and how the galley slaves are getting on which I thought was very caring though

the definition of rich man racing.  No technical or operational relevance at all to the boating population, and boring as batshit to watch.

F1 had this problem for a while and fixed it with technical limitations, but they had the advantage of 10 competitors, 20 vehicles at any one time.  Yachts match racing (AC at least) has two competitors, 3km off-shore in a procession.  Best you can hope for as an observer is a gear failure or an operator error to liven things up.

Yeah Sail GP really shines the hard cold light of reality on the AC. And it doesn’t do well!

A bit of fleet racing would certainly liven things up a bit , and probably send Steven Mcivor home -he has made many basic mistakes in his commentary . Glen Ashby and Shirley are great or perhaps silence for a bit .
