Zozza 333
I'm awaiting Patreon to approve my page, but in the meantime a lighthearted look at why I am starting a Patreon. Tell me how pathetic my pitch is, go on, you know you want too 😁 http://www.youtube.com/@junk_rig_sailor1698 "Hi there, In the tradition of the ubiquitous sailing channels popping up here, there and everywhere, I too thought I would join the fun - so have started a Patreon account linked to my YouTube channel. The reasoning behind this is many fold, but top of mind is that I too want suckers to fund my futre sailing trip plans as I rebuild my boat! I have lots to offer as a diametrically refreshing change from the T&A Thong Wedgie sailing channels. There are too many to fully list, but here are a few of the refreshing reasons you should become a Patreon (or should not) : 1. I am middle aged, out of shape guy with a bit of a protruding gut (what the youngsters call 'Dad Bod'), no hair on my head, am bespectacled and look like a fat version of Breaking Bad guy, so am definetly not of the Hollywood good looks club 2. I look shocking in a bikini 3. My man-boobs are real, not fake 4. I am not in a sunny suntan oil inducing location 5. I am not actually even sailing because I am rebuilding an old GRP boat 6. I won't tell you I need the Patreon donations money to buy cameras' to do better filming. Truth is I just use my cell phone as I am too lazy to figure out anything else. 7. My channel updates are haphazard as is my filming and editing quality So there you have it. For as little as $3 per month, you can be one of the Patreon suckers that instead of funding beautiful people on fancy sailing boats in sunny locales - instead you can fund my dreadful channel. It is an easy choice, surely..."

I think I need to interview and get a tour of Mr Panther's boat. It's bound to get a 100K views and get my channel roaring! But seriously, the cost of living crisis hits us mariners especially hard. The COLC is a great excuse for NZ Maine retailers to increase their charges. I purchased a Plastimo compass via 'Waveinn' recently, and even with overseas freight it was $100 bucks cheaper than what any NZ chandler was selling the same item ... Make sure it is a southern hemisphere compass, otherwise it won't work properly.

K4309 369
Sometimes you can waste money paying too little for something. I've found that out buying cheap stuff that is junk / doesn't do the job. And sometimes the local retailers offer a value proposition with knowledge and advice, not just on price point. Not always. But I do like supporting local owner operators when I get a chance.

Mostly, I have had positive experiences when buying marine gear offshore. I get the "support local" ideology, but I think in 2024 that's gone out the window years ago-- I feel no such inclination to support Burnsco, Smart Marine, or Marine Deals which are all huge players in the NZ that monopolise the marine market. I am not saying you are not right though K4, because they are still NZ companies - I may indeed be part of the problem with my attitude.

Marine Deals is right up there with any parallel importer, no customer advise or making sure you are getting the right product etc. If you are shopping at marine deals, you may as well go straight to Temu. I do shop at Burnsco, mainly cause they are the only option for many things, and do find the staff really good and helpful, but I don't describe Burnsco as an owner operator type. Probably the best examples of that are fishing shops. There are two owner operator fishing shops near me, or I could get the same stuff off Marine Deals cheaper. Get to have some banter and a little local intel on where the fish are holding while supporting the owner operators. A comment on Burnsco, I have found them exceptional for returning sh*t. Staff and the store manager as helpful as he could possibly be, including bending rules. Many examples, but the latest one, got a solar powered vent for the heads, had to cut a hole in my deck, reshape, build a plinth, paint etc to accommodate fancy solar vent. 18 months on and the face panel had faded and the thing basically wasn't working. Raised this next time I was in store, (receipt long gone) they told me when I bought it as I'd forgotten, was outside warranty but I explained it was an outdoor product and wasn't durable as per the CCG, no problem swapping / replacing it, AND, if I wanted a better / different item, they could swap my faulty one like for like, then immediately credit me the new one they swapped, so I was free to choose any other spec / product, rather than forcing me to put up with something that clearly wasn't fit for purpose. I've never had that from an online retailer. If there is only a modest price difference, I will buy local for that support. Early June I bought a new blender jug online. Free & fast delivery they said. Hasn't even been dispatched yet (end of June). If I bought local, I would have been making smoothies for a month now. Very irritated. 2

Addem 120
.Be careful what you wish for. Retail is about convenience these days. We used to have a hammer hardware 5 minutes drive away at the local shops. A little more expensive than bunnings but easy and convenient when you need a hose fitting or something. Now it's gone and there's are only two hardware shops in Tauranga bunnings and mitre 10 a long drive away. So, I am always happy to support burnsco or smart marine because I'll always want to pop in and buy 5m of rope or 2 bolts to finish my job and won't want to wait days for a delivery. I may be weird but...It means I buy stuff that I could get online cheaper but feel I've got to do my bit to keep them in business.

It is becoming increasingly common to have free shipping. The kicker is you often have to click through to the last page to find out, and I suspect many people will just complete the transaction once they get that far. And free shipping is normally on items worth more than $50 or a hundy though, not two bolts. Although last time I went in to Fosters to by 2 screws (they were incredibly attractive, fancy screws, silicon bronze etc), the lady did say they have had people order 2 bolts and get them couriered / delivered, via their website. Courier was more than the bolts (but judging by the price of my very attractive screws it is a tight run thing). And while I know Burnsco has been sold to the Aussies, the staff there are definitely still locals, get paid in NZ dollars and pay PAYE and GST etc that go to fund out teachers and police. Don't get me wrong, I don't go out of my way to pay more locally, but given the option, or only a modest price difference, I will buy local.
Ed 147
Burnsco seemed to have ramped their prices up a notch recently, always used to be pretty sharp but a bit more middle of the road now
harrytom 681
smartmarine has more knowledgeable staff I have found, older gentleman at manukau and he is clued up,if he cant help he tells you where to try and he hasnt been wrong so far. My local Burnsco, staff have no idea, even taking part in and they try to sell me something non compatable. Do you play one off against each other now and again to see who will price match or better. Yip, price matched against BOI discount Chandlery, on international Ultra II they went $10 lower/can. $340 as opposed ticket. Westgate.
OkeBay 0
Imagine a time somewhere in the future when your local just doesnt exist. No menswear shop, no chemist, no bookshop or post shop, no hardware shop, no butcher, nowhere to buy your shoes, workboots, undies or RUM! And of course the locally owned marine chandlery or boat shop. There are two I can think of (Whangarei and BOI) that will usually match pretty much any price and also can offer good advice. (and some banter)
Terry B 73
Following on from OkeBay, even if we have we still have 'local' shops they could all end up being 'big box' stores - like almost all shops in the malls. Most overseas owned. Profits go overseas. So Kiwis become (even mores than even now) just wage slaves. We become a nation of worker bees. Look at tourist (as an example) hot spots around the world. Locals can't afford to live in their own towns. Barcelona etc. Queenstown anyone? A recipe for disaster economically. And social upheaval. Wildly different topics I know. But I do worry about our country. 1
