This is the inspectors list https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/resources/ynz-safety-inspectors-list and there is great mix of sea time and boat design/building experience, not clip board carrying bureaucrats. Certainly my experience of several safety inspections has been that of common sense and practicality from the inspectors (including one inspection where Mr Fossil had no objection to undertaking the inspection while we were out on the harbour calibrating the instruments). I think the issue here is the setting of the rules and I do feel YNZ do not engage enough with their "custom

  4. Same. It was the gz curve that made me give up last time. I decided that instead of paying $$$$$ to prove something of which I was 100% certain, i would not bother racing and have a winter cruise to Fiji on my " alternative " registration .

  5. For a lot of older Kiwi designs surely you could argue historical use and provide evidence of successful offshore passages. of a particular design. That is if you are talking to practical people.

  6. Ive use Ryco or Wix (cant remember without going to the shed) filters on my Yanmar for 5 years with no issue, as I mentioned I wandered into Repco one day they looked it up in the book and just got it over the counter.

  7. So this wasn't exactly a weekend achievement but here's a rundown of our return trip from Brest to Jersey. Brest-Jersey Arriving late Sat night on the train into Brest, me and 2ic headed down to the Marina where the other crew member had already arrived a few hours earlier and opened up boat, fired up all the systems and loaded food and beer aboard that had been delivered to the Marina office a few hours earlier. He diligently loaded the fridge with as much beer as possible and cranked it up to max. A few hours of getting to know each other, the 3rd crew was a old acquaintance

  8. Should work. The harmonic requires the full length of the backstay. If you effectively shorten it by tying a line to it or wrapping a bit of it as described you break up the harmonic. ( my daughter is a piano tuner).
