Has been sans rig for a long time, but still makes an awesome cruiser under power. And if it were to have the rig replaced it had an amazing amount of living space for the performance it has.
  2. See the Herald has finally picked it up as well http://m.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11808362
  3. As frustrating as it must have been for the guys on the boats with it being so light, it actually made it very interesting to watch. Ken well done to your old man for the first place!
  4. Don't think its cause for the panic that seems to be going on above. The 10m finger berths were already something like $580 so we're talking about a less than $1 per day increase. Yes the 10m non finger berths have gone up by a chunk but having spent more than a year on the waiting list for one at one stage you could argue they were under priced before hand and market forces suggest the increase makes sense.
  5. Great to know. I'd love to get my hands on some if it's as good as it sounds, do let us know once you have details of where it's sold. I had been told etnz were using durapox... guess it has urethane over the top?
  6. There was also mention on Facebook that he is still working on rigging a jib to go with the jury rigged main, so may be able to increase sail area and hopefully speed too.
  7. Km is what you're playing with available to us mere retail buying people?
  8. We got ours to cat 1 to do the tasman last year. Obviously it depends on where you're starting from, but if you're doing things like coastal classics etc anyway then you have cat 3 so should have a raft, lifejackets, harnesses, storm sails, decent navigational equipment, etc. The raft may need a repack (there's an inshore/offshore pack normally available), and you need a bigger first aid kit, sat phone/ssb, additional flares and a pile of spares that you wouldn't normally need if you were closer to help. Then lots of little jobs which most on here could do themselves - we had to beef up the
  9. I think the costs mentioned above are maybe on the high side. If you look at the fleets for coastal classic etc there are plenty of boats (particularly in divs 1,2 and 3) that are already at cat 3 and could be got up to cat 1 without massive cost. Somehow the fleets for recent fiji/noumea races seem to have become limited to big fast boats, it used to attract boats like 1020s and young 11s, lotus 10.6s etc, but people seem reluctant to take that sized boat offshore now. I don't know if it's that people think that the kiwi cruiser racers are all old and not capable any more, or whether ev
  10. Really sad to see that. Would be great if he can jury rig something that gets him home, but 700 miles suddenly seems a lot longer than it did yesterday....
  11. I'm also looking at doing it solo. Did last year too but didn't finish due to lack of breeze, hopefully this year there will be some wind!
  12. Thanks Matt, at this stage an engine driven system has been ruled out for various reasons around complexity of fitting etc and open ocean themselves have recommended the 12v option. So am interested in hearing anything anyone knows about the two mentioned above.
  13. Hi all, I have a friend who is trying to choose a watermaker for his yacht and is having a hard time deciding which is the best option. Would be great to hear if anyone has any experience/thoughts on the below please. Friend has narrowed what he's after down to two choices, either Open Ocean's 12v offering http://www.openoceanwatermakers.co.nz/12-volt-systems.html or Spectra ventura 200t https://www.spectrawatermakers.com/us/us/11124-ventura-200t both are a similar price, and from the marketing material it seems like the OO produces slightly more per hour than the Spectra
  14. I guess the gennaker sock is due to the tight budget and furlers being expensive. Possible even that it would have been original equipment on the boat, I'm sure I read somewhere it's the oldest boat in the fleet? He was very close to Nandoor until his forestay let go iirc. Then had a couple of days of not really going anywhere. Once in the weather system behind it seems pretty hard to leapfrog forwards again. Especially with limited sail choices...
  15. Few names missing from that list that were supposed to be doing it. Even some that have been profiled on the rni Facebook page I think. Suppose that goes to show how hard it is to get ready and get to the start line. Cool fleet though, I'm looking forward to following the race!
  16. Dr Bob's in boi for boisw for the next few days but I or many others can put you in touch with him on his return.
  17. The kauri dams were amazing, but apparently in the last few years have been somewhat washed away by storms.
  18. Me too. Or at least a significant catch reduction. What I don't like though is when those in charge seem to keep focussing on recreational fishers and seem to let the commercial guys (who I understand take much more) carry on plundering. This article seems to be saying they're looking at it all so may be a positive?
  19. If folks are interested in how they get by on board this video is good: and a more in-depth version with Edmond de Rothschild No worries about cat1 lee cloths for your bunk - looks like most of them just crash on a bean bag or piece of foam on the floor. Also didn't see any mounting systems for their buckets...
  20. Fish - I remember seeing Alex T showing off his head in one of his videos. It was a bucket. A nice carbon bucket.
  21. Looks like Armel has finished, Alex showing 100 miles to go at present and doing 8 or 9 knots so should finish later today.
  22. Harrytom the grids got moved over by swashies. Dtwo, that's interesting. The guy I spoke to claimed to have seen it fall and reckoned it was due to the Genoa being unfurled. It could have been furled away quickly, or I may have misunderstood.
  23. Really exciting race to follow. So cool that it's this close at the front, I don't even care who wins, it's just great to have it this interesting to watch! 42 miles isn't much, but the tracker is saying their vmgs are both 7 knots so at this stage Alex is still going to have to pull one out of the hat to get past.
