  1. I'm back in the country and keen to take the new boat out but may be non-extras. I have some work to do first though so we'll see...
  2. The Severn Bore? That's a freakish phenomenon, however my favourite part about that Severn Bore is that this mad bastard was the first to surf it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Churchill This guy is legend.
  3. I must say; this is seriously cute
  4. "Gentlemen" or "up wind"? Looking at weather maps this year has felt like an exercise in futility - every 12 hours they change dramatically
  5. Yeah, that sounds far to much like something people who race boats do - not fun at all
  6. Wat? No, not What?... that's definitely Wat? Like a surprised duck
  7. It's looking pretty good at this stage

    white knight

Cheers all Does she still count as an 8.5? I mean, she's put on a wee bit of... length The main is... tired, dacron, pin top. I'd like something a little better. But the first thing (once I've done the next SSANZ and I get back from Fiji) will be anti-foul, followed by replacing the forward beam, add some nav lights (I like sailing at night) and start replacing cordage, the traveller is looking a bit scary in one place... almost as bad as Sundreamers The tramps are top-notch, the boards are awesome, the OB is good. The #2 and the gennaker are excellent. I'm happy.

Sold. To me. I'm stoked Took her for gentle sail this evening. She needs a bit of work but this will happen in good time Anybody have an old GBE main laying around?
  10. After all this time... This is amazing! I'm so excited to hear the next installment and see the photos!

    Spencer 40

I bought an old plywood Spencer and replaced large amounts of ply - those who saw the state of it at the beginning were suitably impressed with the results. There's a certain, rather famous 45 that raced to fiji a few times...
  12. I wish my savings plan was more advanced... I agree with Cookie - the separate/outside loo is a definite selling point - way better than sleeping with your toilet!
  13. However, I wouldn't keep it in a marina and would only be on deck at night... You have one of Spencer's good 'uns, I always liked the lines of his hulls but you can always spot a Spencer - 'nice hull with a dog box put on as an afterthought' - is the way I see it. I admire Des's boats the most for balance: good lines above and below, adequate living/cruising space, well balanced, reasonably quick (especially in their day) wonderful to sail.
  14. Ahhh, so that's why I don't own a boat... My lavish lifestyle!

    Winch bases

I made up two teak rounds. Band-saw from square then finished on my mates lathe. Made a paper hole pattern off the base of the winch, and drilled the holes on the drill press. Took me about 30 minutes each/1 hour total. Sealed them with Sikkens Cetol as I recall. They looked swag as... 220 high, kauri fence post anyone? I'm guessing you'll be screwing the winch to the post?
  16. Yup. I sold my last boat to a 'learner-sailor live aboard cause it's cheaper on the dole adventurer'. I think he lasted 6 months before the Coastguard picked him up off the rocks - I'm guessing the boat was carved up where she lay (Mataitai Bay) by a salvage company and the council or harbour master or whoever will be forever chasing him for the costs.
  17. Macrocapa is an awesome wood except I'm allergic to it (the saw dust makes me a weeping, sneezing mess) I replaced some of the Frames in my old Spencer with some seasoned (40yo) Macro. Probably the most solid bit of the entire boat including the engine. You couldn't hammer nails into the stuff.
  18. This all scares me the more. But maybe I'm just being paranoid - he's out there sailing around having an adventure, learning to sail and I'm here on a keyboard...
  19. There's been some discussion lately about response time and EPIRBs, wondering whether it was just the beacon or if he radioed in too. https://www.facebook.com/CoastguardNorthernRegion/posts/10154292753305555
  20. Gidday Shane, Tell us about yourself and level of experience. What is the boat? Approx. when were you hoping to go? (given that any trip will be weather dependent) What level of experience are you looking for? e.g. someone who's done the trip before, someone who can skipper your boat etc...
  21. Bill, you're not seriously considering borrowing from the council are you? I mean, that would be like robbing from the rich to. oh...
  22. Agree with Jon, but if you do end up giving it the chop - goggle, proper aspirator, and a chainsaw into a skip. OR chop the deck off for an excellent raised garden
  23. Ok, believe it or not, I couldn't find my measuring tape. If you ever see my shed, you'll understand. The bad news is it measures as 1065/155/20 so may be too short for what you want.
  24. Ah shet, sorry. Will get onto it. Once I find my measuring tape...
