Help choosing a trailer sailer - big is better right?
Dambo replied to Kiwifish's topic in MarineTalk
Congratulations -
I'm back in the country and keen to take the new boat out but may be non-extras. I have some work to do first though so we'll see...

The Severn Bore? That's a freakish phenomenon, however my favourite part about that Severn Bore is that this mad bastard was the first to surf it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Churchill This guy is legend.

I must say; this is seriously cute

"Gentlemen" or "up wind"? Looking at weather maps this year has felt like an exercise in futility - every 12 hours they change dramatically
-
Yeah, that sounds far to much like something people who race boats do - not fun at all

Wat? No, not What?... that's definitely Wat? Like a surprised duck

It's looking pretty good at this stage

Cheers all Does she still count as an 8.5? I mean, she's put on a wee bit of... length The main is... tired, dacron, pin top. I'd like something a little better. But the first thing (once I've done the next SSANZ and I get back from Fiji) will be anti-foul, followed by replacing the forward beam, add some nav lights (I like sailing at night) and start replacing cordage, the traveller is looking a bit scary in one place... almost as bad as Sundreamers The tramps are top-notch, the boards are awesome, the OB is good. The #2 and the gennaker are excellent. I'm happy.

Sold. To me. I'm stoked Took her for gentle sail this evening. She needs a bit of work but this will happen in good time Anybody have an old GBE main laying around?

After all this time... This is amazing! I'm so excited to hear the next installment and see the photos!

I bought an old plywood Spencer and replaced large amounts of ply - those who saw the state of it at the beginning were suitably impressed with the results. There's a certain, rather famous 45 that raced to fiji a few times...

I wish my savings plan was more advanced... I agree with Cookie - the separate/outside loo is a definite selling point - way better than sleeping with your toilet!

However, I wouldn't keep it in a marina and would only be on deck at night... You have one of Spencer's good 'uns, I always liked the lines of his hulls but you can always spot a Spencer - 'nice hull with a dog box put on as an afterthought' - is the way I see it. I admire Des's boats the most for balance: good lines above and below, adequate living/cruising space, well balanced, reasonably quick (especially in their day) wonderful to sail.

Ahhh, so that's why I don't own a boat... My lavish lifestyle!

I made up two teak rounds. Band-saw from square then finished on my mates lathe. Made a paper hole pattern off the base of the winch, and drilled the holes on the drill press. Took me about 30 minutes each/1 hour total. Sealed them with Sikkens Cetol as I recall. They looked swag as... 220 high, kauri fence post anyone? I'm guessing you'll be screwing the winch to the post?

Gotta be honest, I was woken up by the shouting, not the music. But the music was my type anyway. I think we finished up quite early (2230?) because the one child in the party said he was bored Bloody good New Boat Warming it was too - hope our host didn't mind we left fairly early the next day. But yeah, general sentiment is, come in quietly and don't start a party in a quiet bay in the middle of the night - that's bullshit behavior.

So, my younger son used to get sea sick almost the moment we left the marina, he'd get all weak and shaky, whimper a bit, lean over the side and have a chuck, then come right for the rest of the trip - thankfully he's grown out of that Unfortunately the older boy has lost all interest in sailing, however the younger is still keen but I have to remind myself that he needs to be actively involved in the process and doing stuff. Asking him doesn't work because his default is to say 'no' but just talking him through the process and giving clear instructions, demonstrating how something is don

A fish crate apparently works really well. If your boat is a kauri launch, I'm guessing she's an old flush deck thing once you're out of the cockpit area thing that stinkpots have? I'm assuming you have a baby lifejacket? - If not, please get one - my little darlings got used to them very fast. An idea that some have put forward here before, especially as the bub gets bigger/more independent, is having two - one for swimming in, one to keep dry/warm/when underway/emergency etc. Some form of containment is the ideal, you could just use canvas and make lee-clothes that go from th

f*ck, I knew our distant cousins were backward, but this takes the cake.

Removed meters and meters of 3 phase house wire and similar spec'd switches from the kids trailer sailor, moved the nav lights from the cabin to the pulpit, added a stern and anchor light, installed appropriate wire throughout with no Micky mouse ridiculousness of multiple chock-blocks, swapped out the cabin light and new switch panel in a lovely wee varnished plywood box. AND IT ALL WORKS Actually a good result.

If you have navionics and turn on the 'sonar chart' you can see that big long blob of mud - the guys in the yard told me about it, there's also a rock that's roughly in line from the end of the jetty and your mooring about a third of the way from the jetty which isn't marked. I used to take the Spencer up to the jetty but only 2 hours either side of HT and knew to always go wide of the sea wall.

Rehab, Booboo made an awesome post right here, on this forum and suggested others do to, so that this community on this forum have the info right here. I don't really get your point... are you saying this wasn't a brilliant idea?

Yeah, PYBC hosted a couple of years back but it's again dropped off the radar. Reliving glory days isn't everybody's cup of tea

I'm glad its not just me that finds this exciting. I nearly bought Strawberry Letter when she was recently up for sail simply because MB was coming back. These are such neat little boats - I'd love to see the 1/4 cup revived (again) with MB in the pool.
