  1. I can't comment on your fuel consumption question, but definitely, if you are drawing 100 amps of your alternator when underway, you have less power available for propulsion. If you have the alternator engaged, but less draw on it, i.e. batteries full, or fridge turned off, you will have more power for propulsion. Probably only noticeable if you are trying to confirm max speed in flat water with a clean bum. Normally there are so many other variables you would never notice, like chop, wind direction etc. When we repowered we went to a fractionally smaller engine, and I was very keen
  2. A yacht is slowing sinking with three people on board in the Marlborough Sounds. Maritime NZ spokesman Vince Cholewa said the boat's crew, who were located near Cape Jackson, contacted the Maritime Radio Service at 6.48am and activated their distress beacon at 6.50am. Cholewa said there were three people on board the vessel, which had been sinking slowly with water coming into the bilge. He said both the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Bluebridge Rescue Boat were on the scene, with police and coastguard coordinating the rescue. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter pilot
  3. Weiti has the fully spec'ed hard stand run off treatment system as well. So you can actually wet sand your antifoul (not dry sand), not pollute the environment, and comply with a long list of regulations, all at the same time. I don't know much about shoal bay, accept that they get diggers stuck in the mud more often than not...
  4. I couldn't hear my HH VHF when communicating with a boat 50 m away in 5 knts on Sunday. Luckily my main set was fine, and all I was doing was checking in for a race. I rather imagine when he got to Bream Bay he needed a sleep... The main point is his perspective at the time. He clearly had a bit on. He was concerned for his inexperienced crew and his boat. I suspect that not hearing any response to his mayday, his psychology changed and he just got on with sailing the boat / dealing with it. The authorities have been very careful not to criticise, and in every news story highlig
  5. Here is the wrap up story. Sounds like he genuinely had a bit on, and only had a handheld VHF. Broadcast the mayday, but couldn't hear a thing in return. I think it has been managed tactfully by the authorities. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/437001/boatie-who-made-mayday-call-could-have-cancelled-it-maritime-nz
  6. There is a wooden cradle at Weiti Boating Club that belongs to a modest length very old long keel boat (i.e. a proper classic). It is a proven design, as they've been using it for years. It is the same basic design as all of the steel cradles down there. I believe it is dis-assembled when not in use. It is where I got the idea for the suggestion from. The basic principle is the boat sits on the keel. The uprights just need to be strong enough to stop the boat from tipping over, but don't necessarily carry any load as such. PS, where are you planning on hauling? Plenty of cradles for
  7. If you talk to the H&S department, you can get these full face visors that stop the toxic sh*t getting all over your face / eyes etc. Or you can get someone else to soda blast it for you...
  8. How long do you want one for? In that size range, you can get away with making one out of timber, which could be warranted if it is a longer term project. It is then fully dismantlable by removing various bolts, when you've finished.
  9. Well that is good that they are safe. Very sketchy on details, but I guess for me that is a symptom of a fully connected world, wanting to know every detail when it doesn't actually affect me.
  10. There is two threads on this, but this one is leading so lets use this one. Other thread here
  11. Just saw this on Stuff. 2 people, sinking, call at 6:30 last night. Coordinates said Waiheke, but verbally said east of Coromandel. Very big search area. Navy going full noise on top of CG. Frigate searching through the night by the sounds of it. Not often our warships are used for coastal SAR... https://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/124283586/search-continues-for-yacht-missing-off-coromandel-coast-after-mayday-call-sent
  12. Sounds like this is the rest of the story: https://www.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/news/124252447/wedding-guests-kayak-to-boat-crash-in-sounds-use-paddle-boards-as-stretchers Fizz boat smacks into hill in dark, wedding guests rescue the two guys. One is still in intensive care. They were covered in petrol and 2 stroke oil...
  13. I thought crew was a forum, not a blog?
  14. I would have thought that even if racing could be held safely at L3, they wouldn't, purely because of the perception / optics of it. Apparently we aren't supposed to go boating under L3, so for the rich foreigners to be allowed to do it would cause some angst I suspect. Not being able to go boating at L3 was a key driver for me taking up windsurfing, so I can get a water fix and some exercise when the gyms are closed and I can't take the boat out.

    Damn!!

Prop walk can be very handy for tight turns in confined spaces, such as marina's. You do need to understand it though, and not try and turn the other way.....

    Boat rage

Yes, considering this was all over social media at the time, I'm not sure why a speeding ticket took 6 months to issue...

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/americas-cup/300215615/american-magic-handed-200-fine-after-close-call-with-ferry-in-auckland-harbour $200 fine for buzzing the Waiheke ferry. Exceeding 5 knts within 50 m. I'm sorry but $200 is a joke. Most fisho's would spent that or more on petrol, bait, lures and beer for a day on the water Makes the enforcement angle look very very weak indeed...

    Idiots?

Bored more likely. I see on the live camera a couple of kite boarders at Orewa... Thought it was a bit too messy for that, but each to their own. Honestly, I wasn't sussing to see if I could take my small sail on the windsurfer out at Manly, which looks kind of do-able... if the wind settles a bit. On the fisho's BP, if they stop just around the corner from you, infront of the houses before the bar, it would be fairly sheltered I would have thought. What is it like in the river? reckon I could get away with a nice paddle board session? The gym is closed and I really need to burn
  19. If its any consolation, my copper coat has completely packed up, in the Weiti. Gave it a clean and burnish and within a month has 2 inch black trees growing all over it... The CC is 7 or 8 years old (I need to check), but I am actively considering what I'm going to do. New CC, or go back to a traditional AF. Related to that, I am wondering if the warm dry weather has lead the Weiti, and other estuary environments, to just go full nuclear for growth. Very warm water, gentle flows of high nutrients etc...
  20. Very little info, but sounds odd. MNZ investigating so commercial? https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/124236138/men-airlifted-to-hospital-after-injuries-discovered-on-marlborough-sounds-boat
  21. "Unpredictable" was actively highlighted in everything I read this morning. NEMA said that some coastal areas could experience strong and unusual currents, and unpredictable surges at the shore. However, it said there was no need to evacuate other areas unless directly advised by local civil defence authorities. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/weather-news/300226889/tsunami-warning-threat-to-nz-passes-after-77-magnitude-earthquake-in-new-caledonia And from the NEMA tweet, point one is that the first wave isn't necessarily the largest, large waves a likely to occur for several h

    No return valve

This is a good idea. I would be suspicious a non-return valve would work consistently in a raw water environment. (Note, I've never tried one), but in municipal wastewater infrastructure can often get material affecting them and either jamming or not getting a tight seal, so leaking back over short periods of time. A siphon / goose neck and anti-siphon valve as wheels suggests would be a good way to go.

    Boat rage

I'm sure there will be plenty of comments around here on him being recalled to prison, but at the end of the day, I guess if your on life parole, you can't go round starting fights...
  24. A Tsunami warning has been issued. That covers it doesn't it? One single wave doesn't come. Its more like someone shakes a bucket of water and everything slops about for a bit, but on the scale of the whole Pacific. Hence the warning of unpredictable currents and surges, esp around estuaries etc. The day after the Japan quake we we down to the river where we keep the boat. For 10 min, the tide was going out, then for 5 min, it was coming up, then out for a bit, then up for 15 min, then out for a bit more. No dangerous surges at that stage, just everything was jiggled up. There were dangerous s

Blimey, I'll have to eat my dinner Romany, that was updated after I posted. It would appear I have been corrected... That would be the answer to my question of what the law says.
