  1. If you google Ron Daw you will find several news articles re him setting off on a circumnavigation in 2013, what happened in-between?
  2. Tme add said that the boat had been up to cat 1 standard, that life raft was still in survey etc. etc. but was currently cat 2, and had apparently done a Stewart Island to Oamaru race recently. So I doubt that it was the boat that was found wanting. I would have been very surprised it Maritime NZ would have gone against YNZ's findings even if they were on shaky ground, it would not have been a good look to overturn their decision. If it is correct that the owner hasn't been able to access a copy of the report that surely must have been made, speaks volumes about the process. As wheels says,
  3. Just been visiting a 79 year old German (solo) sailor who is prepping and antifouling his hull ready for heading North early may, Maybe "Angus" would say he is too old if he was a Kiwi with Kiwi Reg, boat.
  4. I cannot see that any YNZ inspector can make such a call, it is way beyond his paygrade, and infringes on the mans basic human rights.
  5. I had a quote from RFD a couple of years back of $600 to $700, bill was almost $1600 when I went to pick it up, eventually came down to $1100. I believe only RFD do RFD.
  6. FLC, your inbox must be full as I can't send you a message. email me at re covers.
  7. Hi ballystick, I am looking for one as well, last one lost in the most recent big blow. Cheers.
  8. Saw a "Duogen" yesterday, a bit bulky, but it can with a change of prop be used either trailing in the water or as a wind generator, been around for a while apparently.

    Cabin heat

another is the "little cracker" = google, solid fuel, though you might have to build a small wood shed on the H28 for one of these

    Cabin heat

There is a Dickinson marine heater / stove distributor in Bluff if you want to look at a diesel alternative. Of course they need them down there.
  11. EX TL, You might also want to fit a prop that suits being driven rather than being designed to drive, if it is to be as efficient as possible.
  12. "Spectro" make a motorcycle chain wax that is brilliant at lubing without being sticky, Darbi Accessories are the NZ distributor, I've used it on anchor winch cones, bowden cables, winch pawls etc. etc.
  13. Just back from the Barrier, was talking to a local who rescued a couple of large Kauri logs from the harbour, when they had 2 weeks of incessant rain approximately 2 years ago that caused lots of damage and many slips including the destruction of the old Kauri dam. He said that the huge number of logs that were washed down into the harbour that were barely floating above the water was really dangerous. I guess with the number of large rivers flowing into the Tasman there must be a lot of timber afloat. I would think the number of logs in the sea compared to containers in the area that was st

    Flares

    Thanks for the clarification Rats.

    Flares

Point of Interest, as I understand it, Baileys ins. Brokers cover replacement of flares as part of your insurance package, correct me if I have that wrong. Re flare dates the expiry time frame is set by the manufacturer (of course) I have an orion flare launcher (pistol) the flares 25mm and 12mm have a 4 year life. They are far cheaper than the ones generally available here, unfortunately replacements unavailable in NZ and they wont ship out of the states, Hawaii and maybe American Samoa are the nearest possibilities to buy any.

    Dicky gearbox

No friction modifiers in the oil??
  17. Will look out for you, we plan at this stage to be out there until mid march.
  18. Chris, are you heading for Gt Barrier at any stage?
  19. Just a thought, perhaps a little Tongue in cheek, I have been reading about how pervasive Glyphosate (roundup) is in many of our processed foods, stock being fed GE corn that has been sprayed with it and coming on to us in the meat we eat, of seeds being treated with it so that they are resistant right from the start and are eliminating bees from the environment Etc.Etc. Could it be we could "safely" use "Glyphosate" in our antifouling paint to get on top of the barnacles, fan worms, wild oysters et-al. I use the term safely in the sense that surely we can't be growled at or punished for usin
  20. A good no nonsense sextant, as said they were / are made in the DDR. Zeis Optics are/were one of the best available. There will be a quite few Merlin nav calculators taking up room in some boaties cupboard, they can be extended into the 2020's as i understand it, worth getting if you can track one down. Of course there maybe be better systems available now. It is interesting to note that the American Navy is re-instituting teaching Celestial navigation, because all of a sudden someone realised that if the satellites die all their ships are quite literally lost.
  21. Don't think the cyclone will be an issue for you, the cold weather last night & today down here in Dunedin would probably be normal for mid winter, not mid summer! Have a look at windyty, as I mentioned earlier I've found it very accurate.
  22. I have found windyty to incredibly accurate out to 7 days, plus it has a range of overlays.
  23. No disadvantage atall, generally a much stiffer boat initially. Think Spencer's, some Birdsals etc. It is all in the eye of the beholder
  24. Hope the wind gods are kind to you Alan, will be passing through Blenheim/Picton around the 16th / 17th, will try and catch up, f you've made it that is. Cheers, steve p
