  1. Climb up the mast wearing a harness that's tied into a halyard, have someone tail the halyard on a winch - DO NOT use the clip/shackle of the halyard. If you're going to be up there for a while (30minutes+) then a bosuns chair is a nice to have - we just just use a rock climbing harness for quick and easy access - they are more comfortable than a chair short term. We send someone up before every long race - so in Auckland that's generally 10 times a year...
  2. Received this in my email today. Seems the widely discussed BoI Marine Mammal Sanctuary was signed into law today. Key takeaways: 1. Boats within 300m from a marine mammal must stop immediately until the mammals leave 2. Swimmers within 300m of a marine mammal must exit the water immediately 3. Certain areas have a speed restriction of 5 knots Supplied "User Guide" is attached. There will be a way for event organisers to work with DoC to get an exemption. 5. Did you turn the tubes? Or is that some prefabricated something else? How do you stop water ingress? Does it just pool inside the tube?
  6. That's awesome. She was on our pier at Westhaven, what a spectacular improvement.
  7. If someone actually organised enough of the voting Squadron members into forcing an outcome, that outcome could be quite interesting. Maybe AC38 could be held in Piedy's out the front of the squadron?
  8. It's weirdly only on NZ521. And not the 5214 insert, although they left the tide markers....
  9. You can get NZ204 here https://www.linz.govt.nz/sites/default/files/media/doc/hydro_202122-almanac_full-nautical-almanac.pdf?download=1 And NZ5125 here https://www.linz.govt.nz/sea/charts/paper-charts/nz5125. NE off Piercy there's a G diamond. In the gap is a F Reference is HW Auckland.
  10. 2 years. Installed it as part of the engine replacement, cheap insurance.
  11. You suck. Cough. I mean congratulations I have been to all 7 lotteries, generally join the lobby between 5 and 1 minute, and have not placed. The evidence suggests it's truly random.
  12. I have the Aqualarm Exhaust and Water Flow fitted. Water Flow works a treat, no idea if the exhaust temp works - hope I never find out I have mine wired to the ignition, it's smart enough to detect that the engine has started after muting it and will alarm again if the flow doesn't kick in. So we can do this sequence: power on/mute/glow plugs/start The challenge is teaching the crew "DO NOT MUTE IF ENGINE IS RUNNING" - after racing in big swells we often find it can take up to 5 seconds for the water intake to fill up and prime again and the crew are very used to hitting
  13. Wow, those tangs were already broken?!? That didn't happen as part of disassembly? I am most impressed that you can drop your rudder in the berth. Mine would be in the mud along with every bearing.
  14. I was once told that Silicon has no place on a Yacht unless you're an expert and know where and how to use it. Since then I have never used silicon. After a soak in warm soapy water... I use Harken Mclube Sailkote available as a liquid or spray. I have also used CRC Dry Glide. CRC marine/inox is useful for breaking down excess oxidation and rust with a tooth brush. I would probably try sail repair sticky back first... I have found that most Sail makers are happy to take our money for anything then needs a sewing machine, no matter how minor.
  15. Well I was close. No. Sounds like it's time to convert your CD collection to digital and get rid of that dead weight.
  16. Mate, you need an Fusion RA770. Don't short change yourself with RA60 you'll regret it. "I only need a RA60!" - said no ketch owner ever!
  17. I have a Bronze sintered grounding plate on the hull for the SSB. Very similar, if not identical, to the smallest of these: The SSB has a wide/thin copper tie, 2" +/- wide x 1mm that connects to this. Why does it use a copper strip instead of just a wire? Can I use this as my EWOF marina AC earth? Thanks
  18. That's a pretty epic DIY piece of work. Well done. Wish I had the knowledge to do that, I would have replaced my fridge years ago! What are you going to do with the backstay?
  19. Yachting NZ and Sport New Zealand have updated their advice on what the latest L3.S2 rules mean for sailing and racing. The main government recommendations to come out of the last few days for Alert Level 3, Step 2 are as follows: Double-handed and keelboat sailing with people outside your household is not allowed Organised racing and events are not allowed Overnight stays on boats are not allowed (in the same way overnighting at your bach is prohibited) We are bitterly disappointed the move to Alert Level 3, Step 2 has seen no significant changes for yachting a
  20. Thanks, So should the drive shaft end pull out, leaving behind the brushes and the body? I am thinking I will unscrew the long screws 1/2 to 2/3rds and gently tap them to push the drive shaft end out of the case? I have retracted the brushes. The end of the rotor appears to be pushed into the bearing in the brush, wondering if I need to put a puller on that...
  21. Anyone know how to disassemble a Maxwell RC winch motor? Mine has a small amount of rust around the brush end and I would like to clean it up and paint it. Cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to come apart 😕
  22. Easter please. There's a way to add voting buttons I believe - which might be more efficient.
  23. Yes you are quite right. I am not aware that "many" race boats are crewed by single bubbles - this would be quite the opposite of my experience. If the crew is from the same bubble, then at level RED, based on current information available, a race boat where all crew come from the same household would be able to race.
