  1. Depending on access (and how much mess you want to make) I have succeeded at breaking expanding foam away with a high powered water blaster. A bit like the way drains get unblocked. I can supply popcorn and beer

Get a "Carbon Activated Air Filter" from Burnsco and put it on the hose that goes outside. Better still get rid of the holding tank, the toilet, all that stinky plumbing, those two hull fittings and instead put in a composting toilet
  3. After the Auckland Tauranga race we've taken some leave and have 9 days to get back to Auckland. Would like to spend 2-3 maybe 4 days getting up to Great Barrier. Have heard the Mercs are spectacular. Thoughts on places to stop please?
  4. It's just like any boundary/obstruction in our normal slow racing. The boat closest to the obstruction is entitled to room to tack, the other boat can choose to tack or go behind them. Rule 21 iirc??!? And yes when normal slow racing you can still use this to your advantage. Just FYI, the normal slow rules are upwind only and boat calling for room-to-tack must be close-hauled. But for AC they have modified it to include downwind. The obstruction can also be a 3rd boat on Starboard - making for some fun

    Starlink

Definitely if and when it's viable and cost effective. But that if is a pretty big if, and the when could be a long time and cost-effective is very subjective. Some thoughts/ramblings... They are years and years and years away from having a full link up for remote places. Just because you can see a cluster from the middle of the pacific doesn't mean it can see an uplink station or even another station to bounce through. There will not be any ground link lasers in the south pacific cause - you know - there is no ground. The Antenna's will need to be quite sophisticated and th
  6. You can go much smaller than 12mm but you are going to be limited by the size and working load of your clutch. At the highend you can do end-to-end splicing of sk99. I did a 4 to 5 to 6 to 8 to 10 so we had 10 at the clutch and 4mm up most of the mast. The 4mm is 3000kg breaking load - which is rediculous unless you regularly hoist medium sized sedans up your rig. NB: I recommend getting this professionally done if it is even remotely possible that you'd hoist a person up the mast on it. SK99 is going to give you the best performance but at the highest price point. Vectra
  7. Can you get stray current corrosion from other boats if you're not connected to shore power and don't have a DC system? Or are you saying that if you're not connected to Shore power then any stray current corrosion is due to your DC system. I understood that you had to be either connected to the shore power, and/OR have a faulty DC system...
  8. If you're plugged into the Marina then you're 50% of the cause I have a Ref Electrode I am happy to loan out - but sounds like you're well past that point...
  9. So I thought this would be a fairly easy thing to Google-Fu - turns out my fu isn't. If I am running the engine at 1800rpm in neutral am I using less, or the same amount of fuel that I would be if the prop is engaged? If the answer is less then it must stand that I use more fuel When the alternator is outputting 100amps; than When the alternator is outputting 5 amps Which is really getting to the root of my question, which is, does my alternator use up available kW if the engine is running anyway, or is the kW already there and just disappearing as heat/sound. I w
  10. Now that I have gone and looked up the 36th AC rules. There is no 90 degree rule like in the 35th AC. It's now a proper course restriction.
  11. LR was ocs. LR got a penalty for being OCS. The video and commentary is pretty clear on this. GBR was ahead and clear at the cross. Rule 10 - no breach. LR on stb headed up - Rule 16 - requires them to give Ineos Room to keep clear when changing course When LR headed up as row boat, Ineos bore away to keep clear. LR protested Ineos for not keeping clear - Ineos has protection under Rule 16. Further, the video quite clearly shows that Ineos kept clear. So no penalty to Ineos. That was the umpires call - of course if you're disagreeing with the umpire
  12. LR penalty was because they were OCS, not because they luffed. The 90 degree rule is for bearing away. Not luffing. And only applies if the port tack boat is dipping you.

You can measure it out ratios at 4:1 - but you have to make sure you premix the base and get all the yellow mixed before you measure it out. It will keep for 5 hours, maybe 6. I wouldn't risk going any longer. The small 200ml pot covers a bit over 2sqm.

  15. Channel 16 (and 71) is a SIMPLEX channel - so when you transmit on Channel 16 - everyone listening on Channel 16 hears you on the same frequency that you transmitted on (which is 156.8 MHz) In isolated areas around NZ, when you transmit on Channel 16, a repeater station hears you on 156.8 MHz and rebroadcasts your message in realtime on another private frequency that is not in the normal marine VHF range - it could be anything - digital over fibre, VHF, UHF, etc - it's not designed for the public to receive the repeated transmission - I used to have a VHF radio that had a Channel 115 (iir
  16. But they still have to follow the rules... Staff legally must remain a minimum of 1 metre apart at all times If your business requires close physical contact it can’t operate. If we are still at Level 3, (and possibly Level 2), then I can't see them racing. If Level 3 holds and races are abandoned and unable to be rescheduled, either due to Covid or the AC rules, then we may see LR automatically awarded as winners of the Final. That will be disappointing.
  17. Two, (or more), vessels that are yachts racing, are exempt from the 5@50 rule - don't even need to be in the same race. However, their is no exemption for the 200m shoreline law, or the 5@50 rule if the other vessel is not racing. Mostly everyone breaks these at some point in time. It never seems to get a mention. Race finish lines entirely, or with one end, within 200m of the shoreline are bugbear of mine.
  18. Unless the vessel has a dive flag up and then it is 200m.
  19. No. The law is 5knots, 50m from another vessel anchored, moored, underway, sailing, motoring, stationary or drifting. Ferries are covered by an uplift clause that allows them to go faster than 5knots in many areas when within 50m of a vessel. The purpose of the Auckland ferry lane is to prevent anchoring and congestion, although it also is a speed uplift area and it allows ferries to exceed 5knots within 200m of the shore line and within 50m of another vessel.
  20. There is no right or wrong answer to what is VMG, it's just which sailing circles you have been in and what they have called/defined it. Even in NZ I have heard both sides mentioned interchangeably - so long as you get the nomenclature defined onboard it isn't an issue. VMG is well established as towards/away from the wind. But it can equally mean towards/away from a given reference point depending on who you talk too. VMC (course) is well established as towards/away from a given reference point. But some sailors will say oh that's just VMG towards a waypoint, and a tactician
  21. So I read in this Write-up that Mr Kite II has/had self tacking runners. I have tried and failed, to get my head around how this would work. And can't find any details on such a setup. Anyone got some links to this?
  22. I have a sail drive if it's one of the bits you are looking for...
  23. Seems this rumor has been doing the rounds today. Just caught up on the press conference and Terry Hutchinson advised it was not the batteries. [due to the external pressure] "the structure inside just guillotined the panel and out it came.” and he also says: "we got both batteries off the boat"
