Acid-base chemistry. Ethanol's hydroxyl group causes the molecule to be slightly basic. It is almost neutral like water. The pH of 100% ethanol is 7.33, compared to 7.00 for pure water.

I had a wonderful interaction with YNZ last Sunday. How did they know I really love to mix it with big waves? They very kindly motored past in their launch probably going over 15 knots well inside 50 m in front of me as I was beating away from a lee shore at McKenzie Bay 1340 hours. I had a wonderful time bouncing up and down. BTW the tide rips around the Bay like crazy. I sailed off the anchor without help of the motor which was idling on standby. That was even more fun.

It's time to bring back public grids and allow a wipe down. The policy of dismantling them and discouraging their use was always misguided in my opinion.

On the Spirit of NZ, it's the morning job of the cadet under supervision of the Third Mate to calculate daily tidal flows for where the ship will be. I'm sure they'd be happy to share the recipe and adjustments they may make for deviations from predictions. And I'm sure you know about the occasional tidal flow notations on the paper charts. I'm assuming ECDIS systems have the same?
