I don't have a dog in this fight but as well as assuming the total number of moorings in Auckland, your equation also assumes that all of the owners are keeping up-to-date with paying their annual fees. The owners that have abandoned their boats at the mooring (or a proportion of them) won't be - they've put their heads in the sand and are pretending they don't own a boat and not opening any mail/emails that look like they might relate to that fact. There's a lot of 'em everywhere, and as and when they are forced to face facts, they sell their boat to someone the same, or with even less o

The issue I was making was mainly in relationship to the public perception that the general city population was paying for this through rates, which is clearly not the case. I'm guessing at the number of moorings around Auckland, but it's still bringing in what, a mil per year, plus? Are they spending that annually on the problem? I think not.

You can watch it here: Seven Sharp: Shipwreck City. And find out what happened to the Southern Progress, the large fishing boat that was anchored in Islington Bay for a few years. It cost $166,000 to dispose of... https://www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/seven-sharp/clips/shipwreck-city

Ok that’s helpful, 2015 Beneteau. Currently running a 125Ah alternator.

3500 moorings. 40% abandonment rate currently. So 1400 potential hazards to be removed somehow - sale, or removal. Sale is likely just a deferral, not a solution. Even if the HM is overstating the problem by 50% and actual abandonments are "only" 700 in number, 2% disposal rate wouldn't even keep up with the natural inflows to the problem.
-
Oh, and what Brand or production boat? I can show you installs on Hanse, Jenneau, Bene and a few others...
-
The answer is "it depends". Best way would be to take a look, as makes and models of all devices are needed to answer that question. No decent marine electrician will install a system that does not comply with the current NZ regs -AS/NZS 3004 (and therefore meets Ewof stds). The main issue here is both Audio and Visual alarms before a batt disconnect. Entry level (one install I'm doing on 14th for example) will be approx $4k installed (using existing DC-DC), 314 A/hr fully compliant. Another I did recently was $14k, 942 A/hr, Dual alternator conversion etc....
-
If 2% of that number need disposal in one year, that's 28 boats. 20k per boat is 560,000.
-
Increasing costs, Increasing bureaucracy ( its almost impossible to anchor in Florida now). And the character or the cruising fleet is very different now.
-
His stat of 40% of approx 3500 vessels effectively abandoned at the mooring, and a disposal cost of $20000 each time with large steel vessels much more, a $50 annual fee increase is not going to go far.
-
This is third hand so Perhaps someone here has more correct detail but apparently one or possibly two steel boats parted their moorings in the recent blow. They were moored on the Tamaki in the vicinity of the PYBC and significant Damage to other vessels ensued with one possibly sunk, I suppose we will pay via increased insurance premiums. Harbour Masters dealing with abandoned boats is a worldwide problem affecting oceans, rivers and lakes.

Well I’m just starting to look into the lithium option on a fairly new production boat. My first query is whether it’s possible to give a ball park $$ cost of changing out the house batteries for two 200ah lithiums that are EWOF capable. I’m assuming all the components will need changing including existing charger, solar regulators , fuses etc and alternator protection. I read somewhere only 3 brands will meetEWOF requirements…Juice, Victron and ?? . What kind of budget is realistic assuming current installation of AGMs is clean and tidy .

Same. Also, why do they wait until a vessel has sunk? Takes lots more time and $$ then!

Very interesting article, HM didn't mention anything about the fact that our mooring fees went up several years ago by $50 pa to cover wreck recovery. Maybe 20,000 moorings x $50 what, around $1m per annum to deal with the problem? They infered that rate payers were paying for it. P!$$ED me off a bit.

Can anyone recommend a good marine electrician to install lithium batteries. I’m in Auckland/ Gulf Harbour. Thanks.

The v60B (simrad version is RS40b) is a good unit, but does not have wifi. It's $1758 Incl GST. Its not supported by a Navman 550, which is why I suggested the NAIS500 and an MFD (Plotter, with wireless). NAIS with Splitter, GPS ant, and 7 inch Vulcan is about $2800. Its a bit less than the V60B and a MFD... Happy to Discuss with anyone interested. Matt 0221539176

I think he is referring to cruising permits and other fees - price is going up up up.

We use a B&G V60-B VHF radio with inbuilt AIS transmitter - approx $1800 - you still need a splitter but it's one less device and a very tidy package - replaces your existing VHF unit. Will connect into a NMEA2000 network to transmit AIS data to your chartplotter. Additional bonus of these units is that you can also get a cordless handset for up on deck for about the cost of a hand held VHF (note we still carry a separate handheld VHF for redundancy). I think there is a Simrad version too. Moving away from NMEA0183 to NMEA2000 has been a great upgrade - it saves a lot of messing around

Are you bringing the chilli sauce up for a northern tour or further south?

Yes, it's certainly not for the faint hearted. but not planning on selling her anytime soon so I guess I'll eventually forget how much it's costing. And yes I've had a look at Titus Canby and they've set the bar very high. I hope the finish on Straight Laced can come close to Titus, but I'm no boatbuilder so will just be happy to see it floating to be honest.
