Browns Island Burning

Recommended Posts

along the shore was very difficult to walk through

Left unmowed, kikuyugrass can attain a height of about 18 inches (Fig. 4); it also can grow up over fences and into trees and shrubs.

I just think that being a looney tune might be the reason she was put ashore there in the first place. We used to wade and swim across there from Musick Pt as kids only deep parts are the two channels which are an easy swim. The whole episode leads me to believe there is more to it than what we have heard.

Considering how 'natural' fire is part of regeneration on most land masses it'll be interesting to observe how the  Browns regrowth occurs over the next few years. Might actually be quite good for it.

"This was found on the same day the woman says she was left stranded on Browns Island, so we're to keen hear of any sightings of the dinghy between Browns Island and Musick Point on October 31.

"Obviously one possible line of inquiry being considered is the woman reached the island by dinghy and it is, in some way, connected to the inquiry."

"We also have no indication of who owns the dinghy so we're keen to return it to its owners," he said.

Dinghy looks like a Seabird 2.6, a few things don't add up, Bucks often has dinghies stored on the beach but not usually with the oars, one would assume she would need those to get to the island, was there any oars in the boat when it was found or any left on the beach. Discounting swimming there would probably be on the assumption that she was in dry clothes. The distance is an easy swim from Musick Point at low tide, in fact you can walk most of the way.

She had been there for three days, so I expect she would have dried out somewhat.

Yep that was pretty much what i had been thinking especially with the weather we have been having lately, clothes would be dry in a few hours. you would think finding an abandoned dinghy would be enough to kick a search into gear.

Wouldnt put much credence on what she said about three days if she had walked out to the rocks and waved at a ferry (two every half hour) she would have been noticed, mind you the Police said that they had found a wooden dinghy which that seabird is not. If she cant give the police any credible story about how she got there -charge her with being a nuisance.

Much as Rotoroa is a new jewel in the Hauraki Gulf, when you're there reading the history of the place, it's hard not to think that an island rehabilitation centre would be ideal still. The community model of helping people has not been successful...
