Skipper plans to collect stranded Kiwis to sail from Sydney to NZ, avoiding MIQ

Kiwis stranded in Australia might have a way to get back to New Zealand for Christmas without having to go through managed isolation and quarantine, if sailor David Mason has anything to do with it.

Mason is looking to assemble a crew to sail a 40ft yacht from Sydney to Opua, in the Bay of Islands, in the process circumventing any stay in MIQ.

It does, however, mean they will have to “go against every sailor’s instinct” and slow their voyage which would usually take seven to eight days, Mason said.

If they go too fast and end up in New Zealand waters before the end of their quarantine period they will have to go into MIQ.

Why not take a detour via Norfolk island, not necessary stop but just to make journey longer?

Same as stopping at Minerva Reef, clock would be reset.

I first thought this story was about the guy in Crew Finder advertising for delivery crew on a Maritimo, starting to sound like a refugee boat 🤣

Wont matter, not NZ registered. Might have an issue getting permission to arrive if ALL crew are not KIwis...

Pretty sure you need to change to NZ registration to get permission to enter, border is closed to foreign registered boats, unless they promise to spend lots of money. doesn't matter if the crew is all kiwi.

Easy to change to NZ reg. and come in with all Kiwi crew.

Cat 1 doesn't apply to boats coming in.

Windows are only dangerous once they get here.

Boat is a separate entity to crew.  Boat won't need to be NZ registered and will get standard duty-free entry period as a visitor.  Crew will need to be NZ citizens, residents or have exemptions.

Wonder if those windows are over 2 square ft?

Lucky we use metric so nobody knows...

Pretty legend move saying he'll pay for all the petrol!  Just wait until the crew finds out they are up for 400 liters of diesel at $100/l....

This is what I was looking at, seemed pretty clear to me.

https://www.customs.govt.nz/covid-19/maritime-border/private-yachts-and-small-craft/

"Permissions

Foreign registered vessels must have first received an exemption from the Ministry of Health...

It is an offence for a foreign vessel to arrive in New Zealand waters without permission"

Wish they would shut up, and stay out of the media 5 minutes of fame. They are about to stuff up a system that is working well for the many NZ vessels wanting to return to NZ. Govt will change this and make all go into MIQ off the back of these stories. Fuel added to fire by Viki from ICA this morning too.

Boat will need an exemption/special permission to enter NZ if it is foreign flagged.

NZ registered boats with all NZ citizen/resident crew are the only ones allowed to enter via the Maritime border without jumping through covid exemptions/approvals.

Shouldn't cruise ships be getting in on this action. How dumb is our govt. 14 day quarantine cruise from Aussie to NZ. Negative test before you get on and off the boat.

What would happen if Mid cruise there are passengers showing covid symptoms ? testing is not fool proof and how do you deal with a floating super spreader ?

If you were a skipper like Billy Zane in 'Dead Calm', then you'd probably make 'em walk the plank!

Get crew on board - depart berth and anchor off for 5 days to ensure everyone OK. If not go back in. If yes up anchor and depart for real?
