  1. But these are only some of the minor and most recent failings of our great leader. When he first got the job he apparently hadn't heard of NZ's great success in Olympic Boardsailing. And when it was briefly dropped from the Olympic program he blindly complied. It was quickly reinstated, but that didn't stop our great leader from failing to send the two boardsailers who had qualified to the Rio games. He likewise failed to send the Laser Radial sailors who had won NZ a slots at both Rio and Tokyo. Does he not know that young athletes need role models and expectations of a pathway to the O

  2. Our dyneema backstay vibrates a loud harmonic through our carbon rig right into the master cabin. A sharp dig in the ribs fixes it every time. (I get up and let the backstay off completely)

  3. Finally made it back to the Fête des Canots in Rolle after a 6 year absence. Family Watson about to dock at Île de Harpes. Managed to pass all these guys - turns out the primary key to speed is light weight and massive sail area. This guy's first time on the tiller, took it very seriously and did pretty well. This guy spent his time practicing his knots.

  4. Tune it to a major chord, the minors sound too melancholy.

  5. Was on a larger boat doing island racing last time - from memory our total sailing time was less than 6 hours for the whole regatta. A great week and I wouldn't miss it but a lot of effort in getting boat and crew up there and a big expense by owner for the time spent sailing.

  6. After a bit more lockdown googling, I notice that the strake are very long, almost the full length of the thing being protected. https://www.cmrp.com/blog/bending/examples-of-vortex-shredding-mitigated-by-helical-strakes.html So this idea might not be practical. I remember racing on a tp52 out of Sydney that had this wire twisted around it all the way up the back stay, I always thought it was part of the ssb antenna until I discovered strakes.... Now that know what they are I can't stop spotting them... Eg...

  7. Ha, BP's on fire! My solution was to tie a piece of about 8mm line on. It was driving me bonkers and I just grabbed an offcut that was lying around. 3 years later and it's still there. The 8mm is only about 300mm long and just clove-hitched on. That was a spare Dyneema main halyard, not a backstay. But worth a try. Otherwise, the AC boats run a little flap on their rigging. Certainly looks a bit more Gucci.

  8. Ditto. We’ve been Gold Patreons for ages (think we were their 4th or 5th).

  9. I've sold or installed quite a few of these now. Not a single issue. In fact, B&G have discontinued the Triton 2 cabled versions, as they were not selling any anymore. But, you are mistaken, they are not wind powered, they are battery powered, charged by a small solar panel. Batts are expected to do 10yrs +, and are a simple AA pack. Oh, and if you install one yourself, which is easy, the gotcha is to remember to pair the masthead unit to the sender on deck - must be within 300mm of each other for initial pairing, or to change a battery. So make certain it works on deck before putting

  10. We installed B&G Triton2 with Wireless Wind Transducer last year. Sourced from Neptunes Gear. It replaced broken and beyond repair Nexus system with wireless. I had already replaced the battery and bearingss. The B&G wireless had excellent range. The specs were better than Garmin. Also someone from Garmin's agent expressed concern about Auckland Sky Tower interfering with Garmin wireless transducers. B&G was confident about wireless performance. Installation was easy considering. Did spend over an hour at the top of the mast drilling and fitting the mounting pl

  11. So Uncle Dave told us the measure of his success as CEO of YNZ was "number of gold medals at the Olympics", what now Dave? Safety Regs review was a disaster, Racing Rules came out late, multiple clubs questioning why they affiliate.... Maybe you should start working on pleasing the other 99.999% of yachties you are meant to be serving, if you don't want to do that maybe the board could step in and find someone who will.
