    Sea kayak

I'm assuming you've been paddling a bit lately? Having done nothing in close to 20 years I picked up an old Venturer a few months ago. Went paddling on the local lake, and promptly fell out. No deck/skirt so had to swim back, dragging a kayak behind me, much to my kids delight. Way back when, I could happily paddle around in a DR, or K1, so I'm guessing balance, core and reflex/ instinct have gone south somewhat. As for rolling, quite a few serious sea kayakers reckon they would not be able to, as haven't practised it for so long. Make sure your shoulders are ok, I've know
  3. The question is, which boat. I could opt for the Cherry 16 and try for a lap, or the Strike 18, and do 3. *sigh* it's a hard life
  4. It's on my to do list. Not this year tho apparently. So little time!
  5. Kids say we're in. Employer might have other plans
  6. I'm all out of ideas. My eldest (12) is adamant that we ARE doing the rum race, and they all love picnics on a gulf island, but as for solo club racing, not much interest. Weymouth YC is likely folding at the end of the season, no new members, and no driving force as time gets more precious, I've left the area, and the sailing master is retiring. The costs of building maintenance have outstripped income for the last few years, so the building will likely get returned to council control. Add to that the new housing development right next door and things look grim. Shame really,
  7. Yep. He spent several years living in Whangarei. He was building a large(ish) steel hard chine boat in an Onerahi backyard for a guy called Ian White, another larger than life character from the OYC. I was just a kid, my mum was working for Ian's wife at the time. That makes it maybe 35 years back. Wylo 2 was featured in one of the nz sailing mags of the time, maybe seaspray? In the article there was a mention of them doing a race in the islands with "30 people, almost two tonnes" and performing well. That's all I can remember ????
  8. Doesn't sound good. One would hope that's not the end for Tigre
  9. Our noelex 22 (marten build) had two tracks, one at the very edge of the cabin, and one about 150mm further inboard. We used the inboard track up to around 25kt, bringing it back a click as the breeze got near the top, then went to the outer track above that. Boat was far easier to handle once we got to the outer track, but as soon as the breeze dropped below that, we would lose pointing ability with the wide angle. Sobstad main, Royden jib. In terms of stories, we came into parua bay in 40+kts, main and kite, with only a well reefed N25 nearby. According to them, we came off a wave an
  10. Is it me, or is that a one way trip? All the footage appears to be port tack. Guessing it shunts like a normal proa
  11. Thanks, ordered a few metres of heavy duty black knotted nylon net. Very keen to get it done, then we're another step toward a great inshore, trailable, fast multi. Only a retractable canopy and oversized boom tent for those overnights to go! Back in the water a day or so after the netting arrives ????

    Wave Buoys

Section 8 pretty much covers it. He's provided a link to the website- should be fine. Disclaimer: It's early and I just woke up, without reading the full swellnet t&c's, I could be completely wrong.
  13. I'm looking to get some small tramps for the front end of the tri. I'd like something I can see through easily (fish net or something?) but obviously strong enough to walk on without fear of falling through, mostly so the kids can sunbake / dolphin watch / penguin watch when cruising. Any thoughts?
  14. I'll do some asking next weekend when the fleet is at Manukau, surely someone there will have up to date assn info. A friend has just bought one if the modified Marten boats, which has a reasonable racing heritage. He's asked me to sail with him then. I'm wondering whether I should buy another one, they still have seriously hot racing there
  15. I'm not sure what has happenned to the class association, I know there's still a few racing in Auckland. There were at least three "factory" builders, Marten Marine built the ones that look like a smaller N25, to my eye the prettiest ones. Noelex Marine and Elder Boats were also very prominent. There may be discrepancies among the mast positions between the builders, the Marten boats had a swing centreboard, while the Noelex boats had a daggerboard. Pretty sure the Elder boats were daggerboard as well. The marten boats had a brace from the top of the centrecase/table to the mast b
  16. Although I never met the man, it's very sad to hear of the passing of a kiwi sailing legend.

    Insurance

AMI cover our little tri, whether at home, moored, or on route. I tried the call centre and the website which were no help, but when I walked into the branch it was done in minutes. The only caveat is that I need to tell them when I switch from trailer to mooring. Which I'd better do, meant to be launching late next week
  18. There's also a burnsco just around the corner (behind countdown) which has a far better sailing range than the Smart, but seems to have less of the other stuff. That whole road seems to pretty much be boat related, although mostly the noisy type.
  19. Smart in Westhaven closed down months ago, lease expired I believe. Had a really good sale, we bought a kayak and some other stuff, like Antifoul, for under half RP
  20. Any recommendations? Pretty light, for a 6 metre tri. I don't really know who's who around the Auckland area anymore. Then she's ready to get wet after 15 months of boredom. And minor updates.
  21. Which side? Little shoal or Northcote point area? A friend has his trailer yacht on my mooring for a few weeks.
  22. Yeah, AMI have the same opinion. My policy covers the boat on the lawn, in transit, on my swing mooring, and inshore waters. I do have to tell them each time I switch from lawn to mooring tho.
  23. Damn, I got sent this from a mate in England. Just came on here to share it with you all, but forever behind the 8 ball.
  24. I "THINK" this is the Wilkinson design, that was (is?) being built by Bob in the half round barn on Beach Road, Onerahi. I had been wondering what happened to her, I'm guessing Bob would have passed by now. He's certainly not living in his old place. Looks like she has been tamed down somewhat, that hard dodger was going to be split, and retract into the deck. When I first met him (as a kid, me) I asked him if she was a Warwick design. Bad move, I don't think he ever forgave me. He went on a serious rant about his own design pedigree, and the next time I saw him he was criticizing
