  1. Baileys were good to us and we didn't get a survey for cover. Our boat is (cough) , a bit older too.
  2. They're envious and want to look at a real boat. Or they're ex yachties pining for the old days.

Talking to him the other day ,He bought it in England , selling it here.
  4. Saw it in the Otahuhu penrose area too.
  5. An 80 horse 4 cyl is probably turbocharged , which I have myself but would prefer not. It pushes a 45 ft yacht at about 6.5 to 7 at 2.7 lph. Mostly running low at say 2200 or so and using about 50 of the available hp. Euro canals speed limits are about that? British canals were much lower... I forget but seem to recall around 3 or 4 mph.Anyway ... 80 or 100 hp seems a lot for a canal.
  6. Oh yes! That was funny/ weird. Why didn't they just fire up and re anchor . After the great barrier storm dragging boats debacle/saga in january, I just about needed counselling for the flashbacks.
  7. They just seem to be scratching their backs and they hit the boat with their tails as they U turn around the bow and stern. We've always had that happen on two different boats , usually first thing in the morning, but the gang of rats was quite different .... that was all night, the buggers.
  8. I saw you coming in to Motuihie on the weekend, looked good, nice sails. I'll take a snap for you if I see you sailing again. What a bunfight that place was , we only went there for the club picnic , haven't anchored with that many boats for a long time.
  9. I like to be seen , 'specially in a dark hull. The negative is the fush. One year in Bowling alley we had a gang of rat kingies slapping away around the boat all night( normally its only one or two in the AM), another was a flying fish just swimming back and forth for hours.( NYE)
  10. Thats good info! Even the early IOR and late RORC boats with counters or fine sterns still make nice cruisers because you just dont drive them past hull speed to make them wipe out. In some ways theyre better because as you load up you get more WL and the bow is generally more v sectioned so unlikely to pound like the later flatter bow sections do. You put 2 two tons of cruising gear on a fast light boat and you get a displacement speed boat anyway, planing goes out the door.
  11. I don't like the unfair and bump hull boats but that doesn't look like a bustle boat to me, and quite a nice rig .Without a hauled hull shot its difficult to pick but 1980 should be past most of the hull distortions by rule I would have thought ( ?) Farr 1104's and Farr 38's all had helm issues which were fixed by new rudders, I wouldn't discount that red boat at all. C flex is a pretty tough construction method and that interior looks very cruisy. Cockpit safety is pretty important 500 miles out to sea especially with only 2 or 3 aboard. People do fall out of open transoms, they s
  12. If you're cruising you're unlikely to drive the boat hard enough to go squirrely. Or set a symmetric for that matter.
  13. We didn't move but I had the horn and spot going several times for sleeping people doing a knot backwards. 2 of those boats 100 % were going to hit us and 2 more were really close and probably would have. The scariest moment was one of the draggers charging 1 or 2 boat lengths in front and across our bow at 5 o dark doing 5 or 6 knots and with an unknown amount of chain and his anchor streaming back under his boat. That was a ka mate, ka mate moment.. I live-I die , I live- I die. Must have just been a lull enough for us to not be on full stretch because I thought he was going to have us f
  14. Yeah I'm wondering what goes on with the new boats , are they sold with a short chain for weight / cost reasons. One of the boat topics discussed afterwards a few times was whether that was the case and whether the brokers should take some responsibilty for selling a new boat to a newbie sailor for 5 or 700 k and which is clearly not set up for the job. Totally minimum standard stuff. To me its like selling a new car with crossply tyes or drum brakes all around, just not acceptable. We felt really sorry for some of these guys, or started out that way. 12 hours later and 20 or 30 re-anchori
  15. All of the above plus some rules as they get older . Lifejacket on or harness and clipped on in the cockpit no argument. That rule became eased as they grew and we were anchored. When they were not self propelled the good ole moses basket was great ( a bit like the flexi bucket idea). You could put that anywhere suitable down below to suit the tack etc. We had no lifelines, we had friends who did and put the net around , and then didn't follow our type of rules . Their baby scooted around until she found a way through a pushpit or something and went for a short swim. Our kids just plain w
  16. I've never had a launch. This season was different for us as the first time I thought launchies were more competent and courteous as a group over yachties. The stuff we witnessed at Barrier in Jan was just beyond belief. I have not seen so much bad anchoring, repeated dragging in 25 or 30 years of cruising this gulf.95% being in yachts ,some of which I'm now told had a total of 30 or 40 metres total tied or shackled off at the bitter end and one of those pissy little anchors the brokers like to see on the fairlead of their nice shiny new boat they're selling. Newsflash.. you can't anchor
  17. Given what you've done it makes me wonder if there might be some crap in the tank. Can you see in through an inspection hatch? That, vent as suggested above, stop cable vibrating to shut off position, and the tank pick up being where it should be and clear.
  18. One of my kids. Next time just bowl up and ask for a tour. Tino rawa trust boat.

    Blue lights

So there is hope after all. What I don't understand are the comments here about different tones/colours of white led. Every led I've seen or used has been far brighter and superior to that old kero lamp and most of the historic incandesant lamps you would find in an anchor light. Incidentally, we were in te kouma when I typed that last post,7 yachts in our bay including one with the rather silly blue light on the masthead. We'd already commented on how it couldn't be legal because it is not white. So it was topical. When I first saw the thread title I thought it was going to be about blu

Back on anchor lights I suppose we can infer from all the regulations comments that the kero lamp 'white light hung in the foreparts of the ship' or words to that effect,is no longer legal . And that would also infer that a sailing yacht without power is not expected to anchor overnight without an insurance risk....kero no good ,solar no good ,all those burnsco photovoltaic cigarette lighter anchor lamps off the boom no good.Shame,we did that for 7 years or so through the 90s when using our 40 ft classic without a motor, and they were good times... highly recommended for learning about how to

I have and like reef rite. Very well engineered, and if you do the kiwislide and downloader option it's a lot easier to change sails. Basically like hanking them on.
  22. Auto anchor is expensive, I bought mine before Kiwi/ lewmar took it over . I can't remember exactly but it was more than a boat buck list price. I got lucky and found one on trade me from a stalled boat project. It was a raft up of 3 or 4 power boats dragged down on me when I was by myself , crew ashore. No one on the power boats. Someone yelled and I literally ran to get the snubber off, hit the control and throttle all together and even then had to motor/ reverse the anchor out when their outboards were about 10 ft from my bow, over the anchor. I was savage on the windlass that day, but
  23. I have a wireless Auto anchor unit ,its a fantastic thing and has a chain counter. Saved our butt from dragging numb nuts at least once , paid for itself 10 times over.
  24. Well we all know what the answer to the question what is the meaning of life? is. So it will be a version of 42. 4.2 amps. or .42 . alternatively one could argue that if yer getting the energy out of solars for free its nothing . except for when you amortise the cost of the solars and the electric fridge in. Then the first one is say 1 boat buck for the fridge plus the same again for solars and controller so 2 K $2000.00 for the first bottle. Whatever, its worth it to drink non socked wine. Also ,using the cost method , the more you drink the cheaper it becomes.
