  1. They have to move from Izzy to pump out, unless they have airheads
  2. Whenever I go past I wonder at cost of private ownership.
  3. Ive heard that AvGas is very clean burning if you can source it
  4. "The chart says you cannot pass through there" "Here, hold my rum" Don Jamison
  5. The procedure doesn't seem to hard for a stroll to the pole https://www.mfat.govt.nz/assets/Environment/Antarctica-and-the-Southern-Ocean/EIA-form.pdf What was Jarles contingency plan? So many failures on his side, getting to Antarctica is easy but staying alive is another story altogether.
  6. If there was a Carrington event in mid summer at least 99.73% of the boats in Westhaven would be safe
  7. I'm not big on his conspiracy theory mainly because the chance of a disparate group of people keeping a lid on something like this would be about zero. Nzers are by and large fair and decent people including those working on the ice who are also bonded together by the harsh environment. Sailors share a common adversary against the elements and many of the navy crew would have " alternative" mates if not family being from NZ. Plenty would sympathise with the adventurous spirit. Someone would have cracked if the Berserk story had substance, but no one has. You have to ask yourself, who
  8. Lets assume that everyone was warned, then what?
  9. A bit of handwringing here, I think every active boat owner would be aware of the Tsunami from the media. If there was a serious risk to population centres then I am sure the CD text service would have been used. Looking at it another way, what would all these boat owners do in any case, move their boats to where exactly? If a Tsunami was hitting Auckland harbour what would I do? Probably zero, hope for the best and rely on insurance to sort it out. People can move to higher ground, boats just get what they get unless you decide to head offshore.
  10. Most people dont realise that a Tsunami is barely noticeable until it feels the bottom, what appears as a 300mm lift has about a billion tons of water in it that has to go somewhere. Tutukaka does not seem overly exposed to the North but it shows what a Tsunami can do, I am wondering if Cody also played a part with 4 m swells of the coast.
  11. Sorry my mistake not carbon foam, but lead carbon is the description of the battery. It is manufactured or at least branded by Remco. I am not sure of the differences but it appears the terms are often interchanged, the battery supplier said that the charging profile did not need to be altered.
  12. The media are all over it, https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/127514751/tonga-tsunami-tutukaka-damage-has-business-wondering-what-next makes it clear that the warning system is lacking. What should we expect though, sirens, loudspeakers? Maybe in very busy areas but unworkable in most places, we used to have radio when everyone listened but thats going the way of the dodo. How about a civil defence text message, seems pretty simple.
  13. Commenting as someone who has been receiving Tsunami alerts for over 45 years on the water in Auckland, to date I cant recall one ever causing more than minor damage if they even register. Tutukaka has to be the most extensive damage but I could be wrong.
  14. latest update- they left yesterday!
  15. The current owner has spent a lot of money on it. I'm pretty sure Tony Smith is selling it, give him a call he'll tell you everything you need to know.
  16. One of our esteemed members ventured far and wide off the northern coast and got some delicious fish for dinner
  17. Read it this morning, sounds super dodgy. The NZ navy would never order a boat to sea in a storm, then spend 8 hours in the most atrocious conditions trying to get to the site that would take less than an hour in usual weather to rescue them.
  18. Fortunately he is the boatmaster not the owner, hate to think what that set up cost!
  19. A little update on this topic, I spoke to a marine sparky recently who said that he had fitted quite a few drop ins quite successfully provided a quality external regulator was used (around $600) and he mentioned about 1300 for a 100 a/h battery so sounds like good quality but obviously this is a very basic system. Still we are talking close to 2k and given that using my existing system with a carbon foam LA was only $450. Its confirms that lithium is not quite there yet for me anyway. So I took a snap of a mates setup which is way, way above my pay grade! Made me feel a bit better
