  1. Yup, and worse than that, the guy who fell in came off the end of a whisker pole that he had apparently gone out on to free a line, without a tether and without telling the helmsman what he was doing.
  2. Cool. Larger version here: http://birdsofafeather.nz/2016/01/29/official-trailer-online/
  3. Colman won achievement of the year https://twitter.com/YandYMagazine/status/951522613993582594 ETNZ won racing performance https://twitter.com/YandYMagazine/status/951516251439992833 Pro sailor of the year went to Alex Thomson (for coming 2nd? Guess Y&Y don't have too many French readers). https://twitter.com/YandYMagazine/status/951514195618562048
  4. You're thinking of Com-Centre Communications - http://comcentre.co.nz/ As you say they deal mostly in ham radio stuff, but probably know the rest of the market. The owner Richard Rowntree was a school teacher of mine many decades ago and ran the ham radio club. Very likely responsible for me becoming an electronics engineer. Good guy from my distant experience.
  5. Well, one recent data point for you... SR26 Motorboat changed hands this week for $11,500 in cruising trim + another $7k for a set of race sails. Last listed by previous owner 9 months ago for over $30k (32 if memory serves). The vendor this time around had bought another boat and so listed with a $1 reserve, so it was probably always going to be a bargain. Still, there were 205 watchers on TM. I'm seeing a lot of boats on the market that just aren't moving.
  6. The way I understand it, that's not the key piece of information - in fact by itself it's kind of misleading since that's not net of the cost that has to be invested to produce that benefit. The point of the article is that you have to spend something pretty close to that amount, potentially even more than that, to get that benefit - which is not exactly an economic miracle. And that money that has to come from somewhere (aka someone). And as far as I understand, the analysis (haven't read in detail) doesn't take account of the opportunity cost, i.e. what alternative benefit might be achie
  7. Hope you're successful... I also race a cat in the US - an F16, and outside national champs, open fleet racing, or at least combined events with multiple starts in the case of classes with very different ratings, is the norm. It makes for bigger fleets, lower costs and more fun.

    Hop along

A little amusing... the fact that there are apparently a whole bunch of dead bodies in the water seems to be treated like an incidental detail, relegated to just half of the last sentence. But we know why the feet are floating to the surface, so we're good.

    Vor 2017

1News insists there was almost a catastrophic collision shortly after the start, "Mapfre came within mere metres of ruining their race" and that only "somehow" the boats managed to avoid each other... http://bit.ly/2C5OMSH Admittedly I'm not a keelboat helmsman, but it looked like a pretty well executed cross to me. Not that that would be newsworthy.
  10. As marinheiro said... Council appoints at least 50% of the board. I'm not sure of the current formal ownership structure, but it was formed from the merger of Auckland Council Property Limited and Waterfront Auckland. The marina was owned by Ports of Auckland until 2004 when it was sold to the government. In 2010 Cabinet transferred ownership to Panuku (or one of its predecessor organizations).
  11. This was created by my friend and fellow F16 sailor, marketing guru and all round good guy Daniel Hearn from Madison, Wisconsin as part of the promotion for a national championship regatta that our club (the Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin) hosted at Racine, WI in 2010. Fun to see it still doing the rounds .
  12. Nice article. Can't find any sign of the rest of the alleged 6 part series. robinm it would be great to get a write-up and photos from your trip.
  13. There's a campground at Sandspit. Easy pop across to Kawau.

  16. Considering the generally appalling state of 'journalism' in NZ, this is a pretty decent piece of work, though I would have liked to see a scale drawing with the dolphins in it. And I couldn't quite figure out who exactly developed and pushed the new proposal. It seems to lie outside both of the two plans described in the article, the Council's own 3 month-old masterplan and POAL's one month-old plan. But regarding the supposed economic benefits of more and larger cruise ships, a different article in the Herald about the benefits of the America's Cup (though that's a separate issue of cour
  17. ...for completing the Vendee under jury rig. Also ETNZ for racing performance and Burling for pro sailor of the year. You can (and should!) vote here: http://awards.yachtsandyachting.co.uk/vote-now/
  18. Home Depot here in the US claim to have them: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Hardware-Fasteners-Screws-Machine-Screws/Solid-Brass/N-5yc1vZc27iZ1z0yfng I can easily run up the road and see what I can find and can mail them to you if you don't find another source (alternatively will be in Auckland in person Dec 14).
  19. It's great that there's a specific industry organization that encompasses and represents those who'll benefit from the Cup. The government and Auckland City will know exactly who to bill for the cost of infrastructure and hosting. Good of them to put their hands up like this.
  20. Keep in mind that in practice the benefits accrue to the few. The funding comes from the many, whether they like it or not.
  21. Interesting...multiple cities around the world bidding up to $116M to host the Cup instead of Auckland. TNZ expect Auckland to pony up a hosting fee over and above the $100M+ to develop the waterfront facilities. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11947935 I think Dalton is playing us. I'm a sailing fanatic but life would go on perfectly well without the Cup. For all the talk about the benefits to the marine industry, how many more NZers do you think will be sailing NZ-built boats 10 years from now as a result of the Cup being held in NZ?
