  1. That's a pretty depressing read, on multiple levels. What do these parents think they're accomplishing?? When I started sailing, about 10yo, I wasn't into racing (partly lack of opportunity), didn't have a flash boat - a little P Class with wooden spars, later a Starling, but I was certainly obsessed with the experience of sailing. And for me part of the magic was the independence, the freedom of having control of this little boat myself, deciding what course to sail and when to tack and gybe etc. My dad taught me how to rig the boat and the rudiments of sailing but then let me at it. We didn'
  2. He now has a bigger problem. He's capsized... https://www.voile.banquepopulaire.fr/news/le-maxi-banque-populaire-ix-chavire-armel-est-en-securite 30/35 kts and 5m seas. Armel is apparently still inside the boat but is safe.
  3. Interesting work by Artemis headed by Iain Percy. 30 kts in zero wind from batteries charged during max 50 kt flight in strong wind. Their website says the first incarnation will be "designed and developed as a city to city passenger vessel, with a payload of 7,500kg" http://www.artemistechnologies.co.uk/en/technologies/what-artemis-technologies-does/autonomous-sailing-vessels
  4. My impression is that the 3.7 is also going reasonably well, but in general yes I think your point is valid. Incidentally, there was also some hand-wringing about more or less the same issue in Sailing Anarchy a while back... http://sailinganarchy.com/2018/01/28/how-yachting-killed-sailing-in-the-us/

    Yanmar

I'm not an engine guy but Yanmar inboards seem pretty common in NZ boats, so I was interested to see this pretty unfavorable review pop up in my RSS reader today... http://twoatsea.com/yanmar-engine-review/ What do others who own Yanmar engines think of them?
  6. That's a real shame. Did Tigre change hands successfully recently after being on TM a while back?
  7. 12m steel if that helps. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503450&objectid=12153449

    Leda

What a great story - the days when a couple of young guys, not long back from the war, had the confidence to build a 54ft boat in their Northcote backyard. I loved this line from the owner's website: "It just never occurred to them it might not work." Also interesting that the whole boat took only 29 months to build but the refit took 7 years.

    Wave Buoys

I'm not a lawyer but I don't think so. 8 describes the conditions under which you may post a link (and 8.4 perhaps obligates Matt). It does not extinguish copyright.

Umm... are you aware of how copyright law works? Did you read paragraph 6.1 of Swellnet's Terms and Conditions??

    F18 Worlds

Ex-pat Kiwi Mike Easton and long time crew Tripp Burd finished the F18 Worlds today in Sarasota, Florida in 2nd place behind Greece's Paschalidi and Trigonis... https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_regatta_results.php?regatta_id=14553&show_crew=1 The pair were F18 US national champions in 2012-2014 and 2nd in 2015. In 2016 Easton campaigned with Katie Pettibone for the US Nacra 17 spot for the 2016 Olympics, coming 2nd in the qualification series. Some may also recognize Burd's name from Team Freeburd's exploits in the 2015 and 2017 Race to Alaska as documented in their youtu

    SailGP Launch

Another slightly odd promo video, seems very disjointed, many clips shown twice, and free of any new information that I could detect. Hopefully the actual sailing will be better.

    SailGP Launch

Interesting strategy for their promo video... seemed like less that 5 seconds of footage showing actual boats actually sailing. Still, no indication of any taxpayer subsidies... so more power to them.
  15. Horses for courses really. I know you're thinking about this in the sailing context, but as it happens I ordered an e-bike off Amazon last week; will be here (Chicago) tomorrow. My car died recently and has reached its end of economic life; I have a particular life situation right at the moment that means I don't have much need to travel more than a couple of miles from the house, and can readily borrow a car if I do. So spending 20k on a new car seemed a bit overkill right at the moment (money better spent on sailing!), vs spending less than the RRP of that piece of Shimano kit on an e-bi
  16. Yeah I don't think too many of us old guys, even the moderately fit ones would be willing to subject our bodies for very long to the pumping he's doing on the way back out . But as technology for technology's sake, definitely cool.

  19. What's actually involved in getting something like that off the beach, preferably without destroying it in the process?
  20. "the mooring could provide at least a $30.4 million boost over the next decade" So around one thousandth of one percent of current GDP. Sure that seems like a good deal.
  21. Speaking of... https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12120334 Still, think of all the poor lawyers' kids that won't have to go hungry anymore. Heart-warming really.

    It works!

Some new official footage, including one faceplant. Interesting only 2 crew in this test boat. Makes you wonder what the potential might be a for a class to develop at around this scale.
