  1. Yep, she has boards and the 2nd owner added the little mini keels, I think to protect the saildrives. The rudders stick down further and don't pop up or anything so beaching probably won't be an option. This weeks job is to service the engines and order all our spare parts. Where is the best place to get Yanmar spares? Pretty good access to the engines, not so much to the genset which sits behind one of the motors - its more of a job for a contortionist!
  2. Hi All Thought its about time to our new (to us) boat, Lady Nada, a Lavranos 44 sailing cat. She's a homebuilt foam and glass cat that was built in Port Waikato in 2007 and we're her third owners as of 6 weeks ago. She's had a busy life with 5 trips to the islands in her life already. Its been a busy 6 weeks as we brought her on the hard in Whangarei and have been flat out getting her sorted to head off to the islands this winter. We relaunched her just before Easter and having to trying to use her as much as possible since then. Having her 10min away from home at Bayswater Marina is m
  3. The emergency tiller in these Benetaus are not very useful. I understand they are just a T bar with short handles like you see here: http://www.pbo.co.uk/seamanship/using-an-emergency-tiller-25196 If these guys were having to use that arrangement, I can see how they got into trouble. Friends of ours on a Oceanis 50 managed to break both their Autopilot and steering cables mid ocean and had to use the emergency tiller for about 12 hours while they repaired the cables. The wife did most of the steering during that and her hands were numb for days afterwards.
  4. Drogue run is dated 2006. Did they pull out some of the piles for maintenance about then?
  5. Yes, a great loss. I've just sailer a Farrier 41 cat back from Fiji and was very impressed at the design. The clever use of space inside was what impressed me the most, considering he hadn't done many cats before that design.
  6. I reckon its a great idea. It'll be a quantum leap for monohull design with a real chance of trickle down. I reckon in 10 years, we'll have a dozen 50fter club racing version of these things parked in Westhaven.
  7. They gave us a huge helping hand in their foil autopilot system. It was a totally automatic foil control system. It wasn't allowed to be used but ETNZ figured out a system by placing a screen on top of the Autopilot display for Tuke to manually match what the Autopilot said.

    Hello Taeping

Yep, shes a memorable boat alright. I did a race on her and we never dropped below 25kts boat speed from the start by the bridge to North head. I was in the leeward cockpit on the sheet which and was hanging onto the winch handle or I would have been washed out the back! She'll be missed in this years Coastal
  9. Interesting Hurricane plan they have for the charter fleet. http://www.bvimarineassociation.com/downloads/1607PARAQUITA%20BASE%20PLAN%2026%20Jun17.pdf https://www.google.co.nz/maps/place/Paraquita+Bay/@18.4192735,-64.5776125,841m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8c0576d5c5b353ff:0xfea272c57f388586!8m2!3d18.4187653!4d-64.5758838
  10. I get 25:1 too by imagining 1kg of load applied to the yellow line and then adding it up a 6x2x2+1 for the anchoring of the tail on the final cascade block

Thanks all, if we get to sea trial, I'll get on the SSB and call Taupo Maritime Radio while on AP and see what happens. I think I'll plan on moving the SSB if we get the boat, as those are two important systems that you want to rely on when everything else is going wrong! I could just imagine trying to talk to Taupo Maritime Radio mid medical emergency and the boat turns 90 degrees every time you transmit! That wouldn't help the situation much.

Seem we're talking SSB - I have a question you guys can help me with! A yacht I'm looking at buying has the main SSB box right next to the Raymarine Course Computer. Would having them this close cause issues?

Yes, Very lucky the ketch had the radio on. It must have been an SSB? Do many people leave theirs on at anchor when you in a location like that or is it more likely they happened to be up and calling someone?
  14. This rings pretty true for my group of 30-35yo friends. 10 Years ago, we had 5 Piedys, a sportboat and a SR26 between us and yachting was what we did. Now, they all have power boats that live on trailers in the front yard of their house's with massive mortgages. Holidays are spent at the family bach or overseas.
  15. Sail Surf Roam did some pretty cool videos of Cruising Tasmania that made me add it to my bucket list. http://sailsurfroam.com/film/#sailsurfroam
  16. Wow, there are some cool boats over there. I didn't realize there was more than one team playing around with the biplane rig. I reckon these guys have got the right attitude to join the 8.5 fleet - man that's some sail area!

I'm looking for $11,500 for my half. She's got lots of nice gear and a great sail wardrobe. Coen, the other half owner, is a cool dude and very easy going.

Have I got the deal for you! My half of Freedom is for sale. Half the cost and work but the same amount of fun!
  19. My Brother-in-Law has just been given a pretty tidy wooden Opti for his kids but it didn't come with a centreboard. Before we make one, does anyone have one floating around that they don't need anymore?
  20. If your seeking reviews of Kevin Johnson Boat Builders, I'm more than happy to give you a public one! In 2015, our insurance company gave the job of repairing Freedom to Kevin Johnson and we are very happy with the result. Freedom had been involved in the collision (not our fault) and had lost nearly a meter off her port bow. Some boat builders just wanted to glass on a foam block and shape it, whereas Kevin rebuilt the front of the boat in double diagonal kaihikatea planking. You can't tell at all that the whole bow is new, either inside or outside, as they did a perfect job. Kevin did a
  21. According to the noise rules in Chapter E25 of the Unitary Plan, you can be as noisy on Sunday as you can on Monday to Saturday, just for a shorter time when your doing your "home handyman work."
  22. For sale - Half share in Freedom - $12,500 I'm planning of moving up to big cruiser in a few months time, so I unfortunately need to sell out the most awesome boat ever - Freedom. Coen wants to keep his half so whoever buys in, needs to get along with him, which isn't hard. Freedom is one of the original double diagonal Kaihikatea GBEs but has had almost everything replaced or beefed up in the last few years, including: - New Mast - New Beams - Full sail wardrobe in great condition. - Cockpits raised - Bows chopped off - Sterns extended - Centreboards extended and cases stiffened She
  23. One of the reason I brought Ryobi 18v tools (and I know KMM has some too) is they make a car charger that runs of 12v. https://www.bunnings.co.nz/ryobi-one-dual-chemistry-car-battery-charger-14-4-18v_p00309751

  25. It's a match race of the Max's! Max Hawkes (Arbitare) vs Max Cross (Oracle). Both are mates of mine so - GO MAX!
