  1. Thanks KM. Rare common sense comments from within the trade. We've used everything from the old fishermans pick, good but needs heavy chain and impossible to stow, thru danforth(great but hard to stow ),plough,delta,grapnel,rocna and from experience a lot depends on how you set it. The Jaffa method of roaring into the bay at 7 knots and letting it go makes it hard for any anchor to set.Rocna suits as a good all round easy to use example and hasn't let go...yet.
  2. Yes,in addition to all his wisdom on worldly matters. I'd like to hear your take on the best anchor for our waters KM. You'd no doubt see and hear it all.
  3. Yeah ,well if the button gets pushed there will be no getting out of Dodge ! Russkies can blow the world up 3 times more than the US will be a big deal when the world gets blown up the first time won't it ? Madness on all counts from that awful looking ,(but no doubt expensive & comfortable whilst at anchor) catamaran to the arms race to oblivion ! No improvement on the looks department from the last boat MH had. Oh well ,makes the world go round but hey guys,we're there too just not in such splendour .
  4. Be careful what you wish for....you just might get it. Don't want Oz rules here (plus fees). Enforcement won't change much either. The galahs will still perform just like they do on the roads. Just get on with your sailing and ignore the dickheads .It's the most pragmatic solution .
  5. Yes...it's control by regulation and penalty of the masses for personal power and benefit of the few who get that control. The new science of 'strategic planning' is the mechanism. Ultimately its the bureaucracy that wields the power. Pollies come and go but the bureaucracy entrenches itself. Look at NZ in the last 25 years and see how ,little by little, inch by inch your personal liberties have been stolen away. All in your best interests of course. NZ is heading towards China type State control.
  6. Never mind about the relative virtues of VHF,PLB,AIS,DSC ,Flares tea towels or what have you. Self preservation and own responsibility should kick in way ahead of those. Off Tairua yesterday and 3 jetskis blasted past on their way to the Alderman Is. Notwithstanding jetskis are the biggest blight on the seascape yet devised by man those 3 could be described as attempted suicide ! They probably did make it as I haven't heard of a search .They would have rationalised the expedition as it was calm,there were 3 of us,we had cell phone,vhf etc etc. Oh OK someone else will rescue us if our plans go

  8. Regional Councils can't get at ships but can get at yachties/boats. And of course those all important fees to ensure the future (large) salaries. Watch for new fees coming from a regional council near you soon
  9. This is not meant to be funny. Local Govt. bureaucrats have neatly turned the tables on the long suffering ratepayers and now the situation is that we are here to serve them. Via rates,fees,user fees compliance and of course should you not pay they can sell you up.The only secured taxation (rates) there is.
  10. That's not all. Mayoral discussions throughout NZ are getting the pollies to legislate for fan worm.. Fools that they are they will probably do it. Object ? Fees ,fees and more fees plus paper work. More controls at choke points,in this case ,marinas. BS. Nothing is being done about the ships that brought /bring fan worm in. Like so much of NZ today its all about revenue production and bureaucratic control, all in our best interests of course

  12. HT is correct. Many clubs of a wide spread of interest need to combine. But empires,patch protection,egos and prejudice have to be overcome. Sadly ,until the indispensables (usually old white men & women ) die it's almost impossible to succeed. Golf,bowls,tennis,boating just a few that come to mind. But once the indispensables are gone there aren't any volunteers so you have to pay the organisers. Hence the rise of pay for play.   13. It's a long road that has no turning and remarkably Native is correct in most of what he said .Read Boo Boo's short post about having fun first and there you have it. My first 'boat' was a tin canoe,turned up sheet of galvanised iron like a stitch & glue with the stern plugged in with a bit of wood. No lifejackets (shock horror ) and we kids were gone all day.Later a derelict planked dinghy to which we added sails (purloined sheets).From there a P and so on. Later racing came but never lost the fun part. Sailing is a thrill when you come from that background no matter what form it takes...

  17. Keeping the wheels turning at YNZ may be an expense amateur sailors can no longer afford....if the salaries (the major expense) need to be financed by compulsory membership. BTW in my case they get two bites of the cherry
  18. Interesting discussion.Both sides have valid points to make. BUT if you want entries in races don't put up more blocks. Dr.W post on last minute replacements being a good example.Back in the day there was no requirement and membership of clubs, (RAYC and PCC) (I belonged to both) was viewed as what you did. The clubs actually provided a congenial atmosphere and after race festivities that attracted members voluntarily. Nowadays,for whatever reasons,thats not the case.So ,instead of compulsion make your club attractive by providing what people want. That might include anything from tea and scon
  19. Yes this clause killed our participation in all races that required it. Hard enough to get crew without this impost. So those regattas/ events lost an entry fee plus all the add ons. Just another reason for the fall off in entry numbers. So for the "compulsion" brigade I'll warrant that the fees they got from compulsory join up didn't come anywhere near the fees they lost. And it's cumulative like Fish says. The crew just do other things more important than joining a YC that they have no interest in joining.
  20. You make good points BP. But,YNZ represents clubs and there are only a small percentage of clubs whose members are affected by Cat.1 (or 2 or 3 for that matter). So those sitting around the table in a warm safe secure stable room know better. Adding piles of gear is a safe way to ensure that they are"doing their best". Usually its the people that give up,not the boat and it's a point to ponder that if they didn't have the gear would they have got themselves out of trouble. So don't hold your breath for sensible change and expect $000's of more gear requirement. And not forgetting the expensive

  23. I may be able to help. The way it works is that staff/bureaucrats go to consultant,usually known to them as sympathetic,empathetic,understanding and cooperative. Consultant is informed of required outcome so consultant works back from there that produces a report to order. Pollies backs are covered because they are required to always act on professional advice. Rarely does a consultant produce any other sort of report at the penalty of not getting the next job. Plus the old boy network marks an uncooperative consultant. And that's how it works-- consultant gets huge fees,staff get a free ride
  24. I guess someone's done it up ? So skinny you have to go on deck to just change your mind. She's had an interesting history and could tell some real (un PC ) tales. Used to be known as the 'EEL'. Don't think it had a spade rudder then .
