Haha, yes! And we very rarely see boats getting shut out above the line, so not sure why they wouldn't try starting near the windward end?

Is there a wooden spoon for worst starter? 😅 Approaching close hauled at the pin gives you no room to bear off and build speed before the gun. It's never going to work, no matter how many times he tries it! 🤔

If they cancel before the first race you get your money back.
  6. The Moth bare hull is $72K https://mackayboats.com/index.cfm/shop/bm-v3-bieker-moth-package-inc-foils-trolley-top-cover/ You could build a Cherub for $20K. There is a 3 year old one here for $10K https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/boats-marine/yachts/centreboard/listing/5084533868 But you are not comparing like for like, since the Moth is professionally built full carbon vs Cherub home built with plywood hull. Plus the Moth foils would add a lot to the cost.
  7. Yes it would be nice to see more sailors sent to the Olympics - especially those who have qualified. But if they send too many who under-perform, they will lose their funding from HPNZ. So it is a balancing act.

Here is the course: Maybe some free viewing at Northcote under the harbour bridge, or Stanley Point, or in the Westhaven breakwater carpark. Ponsonby club is selling tickets for $50. Maybe bring a raincoat and umbrella as it is looking like rain and nor'easters! 😪
  9. Wow! At 1.30pm they were 18km offshore from 90 Mile Beach when Carey’s shipmate suddenly stabbed him in the head. “I’ve never been more terrified in my life”, Carey said. He barricaded himself into a living space below deck until help arrived about six hours later, at 7.30pm. Why did someone not try to save his boat? Is it because if you have a conviction, police treat you badly? Or was it because of the location? Maybe there weren't any experienced sailors in the police or coastguard willing to sail an unknown vessel back around North Cape, or down to New Plymouth.
  10. Yes Wetmaps is working again, plus with updated charts: https://wetmaps.co.nz/ Also Navionics Web App (now called Garmin Marine Maps) has started working again, even the sonarcharts https://maps.garmin.com/en-NZ/marine?maps=another-brand&overlay=false&key=rckq2ge859x6 👋👋
  11. Must be great out the back of Barrier at the moment with all these souwesters!
  12. Don't forget the safety regs. Cat 3, Cat 4, etc.
  13. Looks like plenty of empty berths, so could check one of those.
  14. Yes appears Waiheke was added to the MPI list last week. "Anchoring a vessel is permitted within the controlled area but cleaning requirements must be met before leaving the area. Instructions about this are below the map." https://www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/exotic-pests-and-diseases-in-new-zealand/active-biosecurity-responses-to-pests-and-diseases/exotic-caulerpa-seaweeds-caulerpa-brachypus-and-caulerpa-parvifolia-in-new-zealand/the-legal-rules-for-boating-and-fishing-to-stop-the-spread-of-exotic-caulerpa/
  15. A bit hard to tell about what's happening at Waiheke. Lots of boats at Palm Beach a few weeks ago.
  16. Sport Integrity Commission launch investigation into Yachting NZ following raft of conduct complaints The Sport Integrity Commission has launched an investigation into Yachting NZ following a raft of cultural, athlete welfare and conduct complaints. The investigation, instigated under section 32 of the Integrity Sport and Recreation Act, is set to be the first high profile test of the new agency's powers. The new agency has received at least five separate complaints against YNZ. It is not believed any current athletes in YNZ's high performance programme are among the compla

  18. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown takes plunge in saltwater swimming pool before today’s opening The mayor shared a video of him diving into the pool in his board shorts and swimming three laps of the 33m-long pool, which he has dubbed Browny’s pool. “The first time we raised this, Eke Panuku said it will be $5 million. I was thinking, 'Oh, my God, you're not getting my message,” Brown said. He had hoped to get the pool built for $100,000, but the need for fences and other safety measures, along with changing facilities, took it up to $500,000. “Re-using existing marina pontoons h

  20. I think the main reason some people don't like sail drives, is that they are more costly to maintain and service.
  21. OK, so she has set up a jury rig, and now sailing with a storm jib at 4 knots. She may head for Hobart or Adelaide. 700 miles to go.
  22. Oh no - Medallia (Pip Hare) has just dismasted! She is 800 miles south of Australia. Wonder who will get the job of rescuing her? Maybe Sam Davies husband as he is closest...
  23. Wynyard Quarter bridge malfunctions three days after reopening, pedestrians frustrated A key pedestrian bridge on Auckland’s waterfront was closed due to a fault only three days after its highly anticipated opening. The Wynyard Crossing bridge was reopened on Friday morning after a lengthy nine-month closure that forced pedestrians to walk around it or take a ferry. But this morning the bridge suffered a malfunction with gates preventing anyone from crossing for 10 to 15 minutes. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/wynyard-quarter-bridge-malfunctions-three-days-after-reopening-pe
