How is it that these guys can just jump ship and take all the secrets with them? Where is the non-competition clause? All my job contracts prevent me from working with a competitor for several years...
  3. When Cyclone Tam tore the roof off Taipa Sailing Club last month, the future of the small but spirited Northland club was in serious doubt. Instead, it might just be the event that saves it. The cyclone struck the picturesque club at Taipa Point in Doubtless Bay with full force, tearing half the roof from the 73-year-old building and dumping nearly 200mm of rain inside. Water soaked the floors, badly damaging the structure. More than 50 volunteers - exceeding the club’s active membership - turned up to help secure the site and begin the clean-up two days after the storm hit, wi
  4. Yachting New Zealand has confirmed the two teams that will represent the country at this year’s double-handed offshore world championships in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Anna Merchant and Aaron Hume-Merry have been selected as the top team following a comprehensive selection process, with Oakley Marsh and Megan Thomson named as the second team. Both mixed crews will compete from September 22 to October 1, sailing Sun Fast 30 One Design yachts. The selection process, overseen by a Yachting New Zealand panel, assessed each applicant's international and national offshore experience, sailing k
  5. Yachting New Zealand is relocating its Auckland headquarters from Takapuna to Milford late next month, in a move aimed at improving the efficiency of its member services and strengthening connections between sailors across all levels of its performance programme. The organisation has been based at 4 Fred Thomas Drive, Takapuna, for the past seven years but will move to 11 Omana Road in Milford (pictured above) in late July. The new premises will be leased and provide 450 square metres of space across two storeys. Located near the heart of Milford, close to Milford Beach and the Milfo
  6. Rule-breaking boaties are reportedly undermining a sanctuary’s efforts to protect dolphins in Northland’s gem for marine wildlife watching. The finding was part of a deep dive into the effectiveness of the Bay of Islands’ (Te Pēwhairangi) Marine Mammal Sanctuary. The findings, released by the Department of Conservation (DoC) earlier this year, showed the number of bottlenose dolphins in the area was continuing to decline. The report stated 40 bottlenose dolphins were estimated to be in the area last autumn. The figure was a stark drop from the 244 dolphins in 1997 but an im

"The details are yet to be finalised but it seems, from the outside, to be a kind of sailing body corporate. Called the America’s Cup Partnership or ACP, it shares responsibility for matters like the format of the 38th Cup “and future cycles”, its timing, commercial rights, media rights and fundraising to meet the costs of the event – and to attract new teams. It’s a huge step. It takes the Cup away from sole control by the defenders and places it in the hands of a, well, committee involving the defenders and challengers. It’s designed to help safeguard the future of the Cup within a

  9. The first image has been released of controversial plans for a new Bay of Islands marina project at Waipiro Bay. Fast-tracking application documents from companies owned by multimillionaire businessmen Craig Heatley (ex Sky TV) and Leigh Hopper showed the layout of the proposed structure. The project is located predominantly within the coastal marine area and accessed via the property at 285 Manawaora Rd, controlled by an entity related to the applicant. That is Heatley’s Omarino waterfront luxury housing estate. That shows marina car parking, boat ramp parking, a public boat ra

  11. Apparently the growth is rapid. Up to 3cm in 24 hour.
  12. You would not get antifouling dust from the Opua yard. Because they only allow dry sanding with vacuum. No wet sanding allowed.
  13. Maybe depends if you have a car on shore. Quite a long way to the supermarket from Opua.

    Crazy

So did the man go ashore to get supplies, and then couldn't get back to the boat. Coastguard were out for 4 hours just to get someone off. No mention of what happened to the yacht, did it drag onto the beach or rocks?

Good article on why the wing collapsed. Always ease the jib! https://www.boatingnz.co.nz/2025/04/when-the-wing-folds-how-a-known-risk-brought-down-two-f50s/ Today the Boating NZ team had a unique opportunity to talk, at length, to a New Zealand boat engineer - who has been involved since the late 1980's in mast, sail and high performance boat design (AC, SailGP, and many more examples)
  16. Kiwi boat set to rejoin Ocean Race Conrad Colman is looking to involve as many Kiwis as possible for round-the-world race in 2027 For the first time in more than a decade, a New Zealand flagged boat is set to be on the starting line for the Ocean Race. While there have been plenty of Kiwis involved in the famed around the-world sailing race in recent editions, not since Camper made the voyage in 2012 has a New Zealand boat been involved. For the 2027 edition, Kiwi duo Conrad Colman and Rowan Gyde have founded Aotearoa Ocean Racing, which they hope can become something of a natio
  17. The Minister for Oceans and Fisheries has closed the inner Hauraki Gulf to fishing of spiny rock lobster for three years. Shane Jones says the closure, starting from April 1, is to allow the lobster population to restore itself. The closure extends from the Okakari Point Marine Reserve at Cape Rodney, north of Leigh, to Point Jackson Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/545923/minister-closes-inner-hauraki-gulf-to-fishing-of-rock-lobster
  18. The Ocean Race to return to Auckland in 2027 The New Zealand leg returns to the schedule with the fleet set to arrive in the City of Sails in March 2027. It continues a long history of New Zealand involvement in the event, with 11 previous editions having passed through and several of the country’s top sailors having taken part in it including Sir Peter Blake, Peter Burling, Blair Tuke, and Grant Dalton. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/sailing/the-ocean-race-to-return-to-auckland-in-2027/44KXB3CH3BEFRIU3MJOKP5WZD4/ Apparently Auckland council have paid $4million to
