There is a young German sailor who got 3rd - Estela Jentsch. She is only 16 years old. Could be one to watch for the future.

"Sail-World NZ spoke to a Wild Oats XI crew member after the protest who advised that the AIS system was working but was at a much weakened strength as a result of technical issues on board following a media interview before the start of the race, but after a check had been made to ensure the AIS was working and at at full strength. The race relay vessel also advised two other competitors that their AIS was not working mid-race yet did not advise Wild Oats XI of issues with their AIS, and the crew were unaware of any fault until after the boat arrived in Hobart." https://www.sail-w

I think the race committee had to be seen to be doing something - to send the message that they want boats to use AIS. If they did not lodge a protest, then it some would think that next year is OK to turn off AIS, as WOXI was not checked or challenged.

Comanche has now rolled everyone. They have 3 headsails up, but the others only have 2. Going 1 to 3 knots faster.

For water in the Bay Of Islands, your best bet is probably Opua Wharf. There is water right at the end on the western (car ferry side). Also at the fuel dock. But you would probably stay out in the bay, rather than heading all the way up to Opua, right?

It seems strange that the Dutch challenge is from 2 yacht clubs. I thought that the deed of gift stated that the challenge must be from "a yacht club" - meaning one?

Vic, the hot kiwi designers are Rob Shaw, and Brett Bakewell-White.

Yes, Dutch now confirmed here yesterday. No details though. https://emirates-team-new-zealand.americascup.com/en/news/373_Dutch-entry-makes-it-six-Americas-Cup-Challengers.html

Well done to Anarchy - getting third place by flying extras in a no-extras race!
-
To be fair, it is quite hard to compare as they are very different races. With a 'short' race (2 or 3 weeks) you are not going to have such mental/ loneliness issues. People are less likely to pull out, than in a race that takes 10 months. GGR has had quite a few pull out due to 'personal' issues, not gear failures.
-
And this race had many boats pull out with gear failure - dismastings, capsizes, foil problems. These modern light weight flyers can't stand up to a storm, unlike the heavy slow classics in the Golden globe race!

Are late entries still accepted? Or has the cut off now been reached?

Looks like it sold for $9200.

Great effort by all competitors! Lots of 2 handers out there for a very long race. I enjoyed following it on the tracker, and Facebook.

The 30 footers are currently tacking up to Poor Knights. There was a bit of a park up at the Mokohinaus. Looks like Katana lost out by going outside there. Lately Motorboat has lost out with the boats out to sea and upwind getting a good lift inside them. Gale Force appears to have made the best gains lately.

This time the lobbying was from top British circumnavigators Mike Golding and Dee Cafari. https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2018/11/11/considering-offshore-olympic-event/ -
To charter one of these Lasers for the nationals in January at Manly will cost between $1750, and $2500.
