  1. Morse decoder tree was cool. Thanks. It could be slightly improved for newbie by mentioning spaces. Years ago I had some computer programs to practice with. Learnt some Q codes too.
  2. Do you have to know Morse these days to pass the ham test? Can you use channel 16 on a ham radio? How portable are they?
  3. I leave mine on. Who did the rescue? Must have been tough on the reef at night with waves etc.
  4. My boat also went from filthy to clean as a whistle. No magnets. Birds decided to move.
  5. Woo merchants always have a story. It is now illegal for them to claim health benefits for their blankets and bracelets etc.
  6. Magnets? Might want to check correlation versus causation. Birds come and go on my boat and nearby boats as they will.
  7. I'd be sceptical. Ask them to back up claims, especially the 60% and 6 times stats.
  8. Thanks for this. Do you know Boatowner's mechanical and electrical manual Book by Nigel Calder
  9. You're welcome to look over my Easterly 30 (I want to upgrade). Price neg. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1347514608
  10. I had doubts about Farr 38 for offshore. Googled it and first link was this: http://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic/9314-budget-offshore-cruiser-farr-1104/page-2 "I would not consider the Farr 38 for offshore cruising, great boat with a race crew but bit of a handful for the family offshore."
  11. The future is clearly here for some people. The oar comparison was funny but unfair. Since I'm of the sailing variety of sailors and retired there's rarely a reason to rush somewhere under power. I'm looking forward to my next boat now. Any takers for this one? Special deal for crew forum members or their friends or their relatives or ... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1347514608
  12. But how many are up in the islands now for the winter?
  13. TheLanding advertises up to 80 foot but depth will be limiting factor.
  14. Ah. You are a deep fella.
  15. How do haulout prices compare for The Landing at Orakei AKL?
  16. Good luck. Why not build traditional sailing craft? I'm conscious too of the number of small boats blown out to sea in the Pacific which don't have an epirb.
  17. Thanks all for info on chemistry of alcohol.
  18. Acid-base chemistry. Ethanol's hydroxyl group causes the molecule to be slightly basic. It is almost neutral like water. The pH of 100% ethanol is 7.33, compared to 7.00 for pure water.
  19. Seems I now know what ails a few posters on this forum.
  20. On the Spirit of NZ, it's the morning job of the cadet under supervision of the Third Mate to calculate daily tidal flows for where the ship will be. I'm sure they'd be happy to share the recipe and adjustments they may make for deviations from predictions. And I'm sure you know about the occasional tidal flow notations on the paper charts. I'm assuming ECDIS systems have the same?
  21. Wouldn't all extinguishers sold here have to meet t the standards? I decided to squeeze an old one a little in the shower at home. Just a tiny squeeze mind you. NEVER AGAIN! white foam everywhere and what a stink. Fire officer told me the old days where you could have a little practice fire at the local fire station are now gone. Interfered with private industry doing training and making a profit apparently.
  22. So who's the owner? If they are in the charter business I'd love to know. And we should be able to let them know. BTW Terry B, sorry to hear about the alcohol issue. This helped me: http://kmccready.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/alcoholism/
