wheels. Why do you refuse to face facts? My own mum in law lost a mouthful of teeth due to an accident at a pool which was totally not her fault. She's lucky to be alive. Perhaps you don't like pool fences on suburban pools? You'd rather see dead kids on the flawed understanding that their parents deserve it because they are stupid???? That's insulting and, to say the least, insensitive. On your logic that people deserve what they get because they are stupid we wouldn't have a Coastguard either. Is that what you really think? The sign is not meant to FIX the hazard, it's meant to warn.

Freedom GBE. A safety culture doesn't mean fencing and mitigating as you suggest. It means ID'ing the risks. As you indicate at the end, and I agree, kids should climb trees and push the boundaries. Kids shouldn't play on the edge of dangerous crumbling cliffs unless they're roped on.

Looks like you answered your own question wheels. Having seen some horrific accidents in the workplace and on the water I'm all in favor of a much improved safety culture.

Nigel Calder’s excellent book “Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual” is a priceless resource and should be aboard at all times. Unfortunately mine is aboard and I'm not. It has lots of brilliant troubleshooting charts.

Would be interesting later on to see Maritime Rescue critique their own performance here. Seems they need to be a big part of calming the situation down and getting accurate info out. Did Barrier Radio play a role? They are usually good.

John B, looks like your message box is full, I couldn't PM you. Thanks for excellent post on Carpenter Davidson thread. It was great for a relative newbie like me. If you're around Okahu Bay it would be good to say hello. 0226710335 I wanted to ask you how would you compare Easterly 30 and Davidson 28 and Nova 28?

If it ever comes down to one final factor being the deciding factor, I'd go for a boat where the boom passes over your head if it happens to swing out of control. I've got an Easterly 30 and I'm small enough not to worry too much about the boom hitting me. I bought it only ever having owned a dinghy or two and an ss24; so it was my second keeler. I bought it as a safe, solid, forgiving boat but would probably go for something more sporty next time. I like the idea of an open transom which will dump a cockpit load of water quickly if you ship a wave.
