  1. Yes,met the old boy that previously sailed it as far as Dunedin, reckons it's all good to go back in the water
  2. Tiki touring along the west coast came across a pahi 31 in the bush today
  3. 9.9 hi thrust will work great but probably a bit of overkill an 8 would be plenty, I may have a 9.9 yam 4 stroke available though.
  4. Radar may be better, but ais is more easily achieved in initial cost and power use.ais can run 24/7 whereas radar is often turned off to save power?
  5. sailing home from barrier against the SW 25 kts oops just turn your computer on its side,,,,
  6. My first reaction to reading that they may want nz to pay hundreds of millions to host the cup is , go ahead and take it somewhere else! Would be keen to see them training here but can watch the rest on telly.
  7. We glued down quarter round strips on the cabin top to lead water to a 25 mm hose that went to our tanks , it was a cat so a big area plus a lot came off the mainsail and mast. In 18 months live aboard in Queensland we never ran out of water. You could rig up a reversed boom tent under the boom but wind is likely to be a problem.
  8. Maybe it's waterballast that can be pumped in or out of the foil and arm, and only effective when it's out of the water? Would be easier to fly without carrying tonnes of ballast constantly.
  9. Maybe worth covering them from the sun when not needed, both to stop fading and the danger of overcharging if the regulator was to fail? Not too keen on leaving the boat with 600w coming in and nothing being used for months on end. Maybe An old blanket with some solar showers to hold it in place? And one of the glass panels exposed to keep the batteries up.
  10. I have bought 4 130w flexible panels off trademe for 180 each, not sure about warranty but they seem fine at the moment and less than a kg each.
  11. With a small boat to cruise the islands if it was just me I'd be happy with no dinghy just a paddleboard to both get to shore and go surfing, not too hard to have a small dinghy and 2hp though and makes it easier to get groceries. Ideally I would have a light dinghy that rows well and took an optimist rig, and would double as a life raft.
  12. A small simple boat means small problems, I have had plenty of trailer sailers the best being a 26ft hotpot that with a few modifications felt quite adequate for a cruise to the islands and sailed really well, a Ross 780 would be even better.would want to be able to lock the keel down and have good reef systems.a gbe or turissimo would be tempting to surf some ocean swells. but I would not trust alloy beams and would want to be very careful of capsize. I like the story of the nz guy that shipped a 15? Ft open boat to Fiji and had an awesome winter up there. I wouldn't like it to mean if I l
  13. . 200 positive remarks and 5 negative hardly appalling statistics, certainly a chance of a bargain if it is what someone wants.
  14. The one at katikati is cheap enough to have a few faults, they're simple boats and awesome to sail, great value and easy to own, would expect it to sell soon.
  15. Looks good I might get 2 and do the tri colour as well.
  16. On YouTube a channel called slow boat sailing has there conference call to media on it,seems they were lucky to survive the attacking 40 to 50 ft tiger sharks etc which went on to destroy someone else's boat because they saw the wreckage a few days later.
  17. Or maybe the sail is furled because someone is rescuing them ., and they know how to sail.
  18. Nz made but not the company in nelson, but a guy in whitianga that makes them, I have another one that I have used off wairarapa overnight and it still looks like new so they seem to be pretty solid. The spare one came off a 38 to 40? Ft cat called island star I think a wright charter design that needed it for cat one, can checkout the size tomorrow if you like but guessing 15 ft or so.if it was the right size for the cat it should be plenty for a mono of similar or less size with less windage.
  19. the sat phone para anchor and drogues all come up second hand and likely never used, I have a spare para anchor at the moment if anyone is looking for one.
  20. Just buy another aerial and have one for radio one for ais

    Freezer

And as a comparison I bought a good as new 12 v compressor type fridge with a small built in freezer and thermostat, (retail around $1000) for only $50 from a garage sale. I have added 40mm blue polystyrene insulation to the top , bottom and sides and plywood over that. It works fine and even at new price I would be happy. I have had several of these fridges in other boats and also have a small chest freezer type one that runs on 24v nominally but still works as a fridge on 12v, none of them have ever caused me any trouble. Having 100s of litres of fridge space is nice but we just don,t r
  22. Nice to be able to get outside without getting wet on a rainy day, maybe add a Waterproof boom tent when anchored too.
  23. We had Coppercoat in the tamaki river the frequency of cleaning was not more than other anti foul we have had and slime came off easily
