  1. The 27 knots was probably an instant when a pitch or roll movement combined with the boat speed of maybe 16 or 18 kts I think they have a nacelle almost like a third hull that is just above the water under the bridge deck and that helps to lift the bows. Pitch poling happened a bit in the Queensland races where light multis were moving weight fwd to promote surfing while running with spinnakers. When the bows stopped the masthead kept going and over they went. Think thats what happened to catabatic near channel island.
  2. Dipping the bows can lead to disaster but I have read that the lagoon has a huge amount of reserve buoyancy in the bridge deck area to counter pitch poles?
  3. Mostly Every one else has plastic tanks with screw in fittings why complicate things taking a lid off a holding tank is not something i would want to do and you probably can clear a blockage from outside with wire or a hose
  4. Works well on wharram cats to the boom is locked in position and is well controlled. Cheaper than a wide traveller and safer when gybing
  5. Ahh yes I remember you advised setting up the boat I ended up helping to bring back from noumea that way, mine was on a bridle on a biggish cat and sat nicely off both bows. One of those things that would be better used and experimented with at least once before it’s needed so you can remove the bugs and make sure there is no chafe points. Different boats will have their own peculiarities.
  6. Even after getting hit I suspect that if you could deploy an effective parachute sea anchor from the bow, that the situation may have felt less desperate and allowed time to recuperate, regroup and recover and remove the water. By the time all that was done the weather may have improved enough to carry on. I have spent a night on a sea anchor after suffering storm damage, things felt much better once we stopped and faced the sea, so much so that we slept and were able to make repairs the next day. No criticism though. I was not there and do not have as much experience as they have, .
  7. I been on the poles a few years there with no problems
  8. If you talk to an inspector and that was all that was stopping it then I would think that a trip non stop from say Auckland to Welly would help. I think they aim to get a idea of your ability from discussions etc putting it on a ship seems like a big hassle.
  9. I find cat one a hassle too but I don’t believe you would be failed on either a junk rig or your cockpit drains setup if it is obviously safe and strong. The offshore experience could be a show stopper though.
  10. Yes I would like it if available thanks
  11. I spent a few days at the marina in noumea 2 years ago and one of the local sailors told us that once you get more than about 40 miles away from noumea you pretty much have the lagoon to yourself, with very few boats around.
  12. No thanks too cold but their tikopia video looks interesting
  13. Bend the needle until it shows you what you want to see !
  14. For us I wouldn’t panic,I would read the first option as a good in water scrub including a pipe cleaner etc on through hulls done a few days before departure, with this written in the log book and maybe a photo or two on your phone of you in the water. And when you arrive it still looks clean. You make it clear that you are a good person and following the rules as much as you can. And if you don,t feel up to diving then you pay some locals to do it the same way.
  15. But it seems to work fine when used as specified outside for timber decks etc on buildings where the wood is often wet, ss bolts are still holding my deck up after 20 years
  16. Too heavy for a gbe but not for a bigger boat where you may need to motor for 12 hours or more and the lower fuel use becomes important
  17. Yes hope i am still up for an adventure when I am his age although perhaps not as extreme.
  18. Yes quite a few down here I planted all mine and one is about 10 M after 20 years so faster growth than expected plus we are only 50m from the sea. Used to put seaweed juice on everything but stuff just went nuts.
  19. You could probably get away with one of the sealed 12v batteries that they use to power alarm systems but for not much more I would get a small size car battery that could run a few other things if it had too. Be even better if it could start your motor.
  20. I have a young kauri tree that mysteriously died in my garden about 200mm diameter and 4 m long is it worth putting aside as timber seems a shame to cut it into firewood
  21. If the bow roller is ss then I would think that the screws should also be ss. Every plywood boat I have had has used ss screws to hold cleats etc and I have never seen any of them dissolve.
  22. Really Tim cos if you did that they would still search for you and everyone would say you should have at least had a Epirb and some communication equipment with an updated position daily because it would have made it so much easier and cheaper to search . Choosing to go without NZ Reg doesn’t,t necessarily make you a complete idiot.
  23. The proof of ownership is interesting my last boat I bought in Australia and registered in NZ before sailing to Auckland. To register in nz they changed 1000$ but required no proof of ownership receipts etc just a photo of the boat. At least trans ocean asked for receipts covering purchase and preferably going back 5 years.
  24. Trans ocean is a german club most members are German citizens and so will fly the German flag however they also have many members from other countries who use the registration. I get sent a lovely magazine every 2 month with lots of interesting sailing articles all in German. The certificate lists your home port which for me is Im nz.
  25. No I only have the one certificate but yes I will still fly the nz flag the to Reg does not mean I can fly the German flag.
