So how do overnight stays on a boat increase the risk of spreading covid?

I assume it’s to stop people going cruising and intermingling with other cruisers at anchorage , or trying to sneak into BOI , coromandel , tutukaka , Mercury bay , great barrier etc .

they do need to flesh out some of the rules so sensitive people don’t get offended …like last year when the “no boating because you may need coastguard assistance “ thing came in . Many people took that as a personal attack on their seamanship

Unfortunately it is becoming abundantly obvious that these rules were whipped up by someone in Wellington with little knowledge of the maritime world who thinks of boats as a lot of insurance companies seem to -as something launched from a ramp that you tow home each afternoon.

Or Rivs and Maritomos that can’t resist skipping out of the gulf

Well my mate is out on his very large Maritimo at the moment. Last night meant to be 15 knots at Rotoroa. Woke in the night to a severe lashing. Got up to look around and smaller traditional launch had dragged onto him. Very close situation. Took him ages to rouse the skipper using horns, yells and finally a rope with a weight on it tossed at the boat. They got it sorted and the launched reanchored directly in front. My mate spent rest of the night on watch

things do happen at sea and often unrelated people are forced into an area of closeness.

not condoning these rules. They and many others seem way over the top.

but these occurrences give the authorities all the provenance they need.

Don’t condone it either , but can you imagine the uproar if the “rich” were allowed to socialise and have gatherings in exotic locales on their boats  while the “poor” have to meet in small groups at overcrowded parks .

not trying to be political at all just looking at it from all angles while trying to overcome my first world depression at not being able to race in the coastal classic this year

Ha ha, yes, I know I did.  A bit childish really.

It's going to be impossible to police.  But I know what you mean about the unwashed getting a sniff of rich white man's privilege in this country.  We seem to have less problem with errant gang members flouting every rule however.

Or while Gang members distribute drugs out of their border and are infectious at the same time....

Don’t condone that either but I doubt the police are waving them across with a “cheers mate “ as they pass by …I posted my conspiracy theory on how they might be getting across the border in the COVID thread

All of you above have a different read of the situation

Think about how hard this is to know what’s the go, for us that are trying to make this happen, rules changing by the day

My take at present is we are going to end up in a situation where most can’t but a few can race, and nearly impossible race management. With very little if not no vision into the future.

Fortunately for us there’s a big event supposedly happening the weekend before that will hopefully open or maybe close the door on this event.

Thanks Jon. Hopefully things become clearer!

There's also the current gotcha that it's an offence to organise a gathering outdoors that has more than 10 people.

Sport NZ and Yachting NZ interpretation of this, as it relates to coaching is that a facility cannot have more than 10 boats/people on the water at a time.  And of course the people on each boat must be from the same bubble.

It's not clear from the announcement if the Coastal committee have considered this.

Has SSANZ had any advice from YNZ in this regard?

The latest rules as I read them at present are; one household per boat. Makes sense because you cant keep 2m distance.

  • sailing and boating  all boating activities should be limited to people from the same household

so unless your crew is family, or you like solo sailing then I cannot see racing proceeding without rule changes.

Looking at all the above

Biggest problem is as the rules change daily no one including YNZ can give any advice with any reliability

Its going to come down to making a decision in the week prior I’m thinking

Hope this is helpful, but probably not much

SSANZ has an announcement about an announcement for Lewmar Race Delta!

We want to run this race but right now we don’t rate our chances. In the current Level 3 - Step 1 environment- it wouldn’t be possible to run this race. It may be possible at step 2 or step 3 but the rules keep changing so we can’t say for certain if we could.

What we do know is to run the race safely and the way we would want to we need - at minimum:
- Entered yachts to have two skippers from two different bubbles allowed
- Both skippers to be allowed below decks - for safety reasons
- A race management bubble (with multiple bubbles included)
- A few other things on top of this - but you get the idea!

So for now this is our plan
- We will make an announcement at 11:59am on Tuesday 26th October - confirming if based on whatever rules are in place then we can run Race Delta on Saturday 30th October
- you can continue to enter if you had a Lewmar Triple Series or Race 3 entry for free
- If you didn’t and need to enter and pay an entry fee - entries are on hold for you until Tuesday 26th October at 12:00pm - if we can race will open this up again for 48 hours and you can enter and pay then.

We appreciate everyone is mad keen to go for a sail and love the racing that we do - and we want to run the race if we can - but we also wanted to let you know our current thinking so your in the loop!

Stay safe, wear a mask, get vaccinated, go for a day cruise and fingers crossed we can go racing on Saturday 30th October thanks to our mates at Lewmar, Baltic Lifejackets, Doyle Sails, PIC Insurance Brokers and Kiwi Yachting

Excuse me.  Do you have any information about when these restrictions will be lifted?

No, if I said otherwise I’d only be speculating, the rules seem to be being made up as they go along

As it applies to organised racing, Yachting NZ is the body that has the offical interpretation of the rules.

https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/clubs/covid-19-latest-updates

and yes as Jon says the govt is making it up as they go along in response to a developing situation, there is no definitive date- for all we know we could be back in  level 4 next week or level 1!

A few Auckland clubs have announced that racing will commence on 4th/Dec.

Quote

On Monday evening, Royal Akarana Yacht Club along with Ponsonby Cruising Club, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS), Richmond Yacht Club and Bucklands Beach Yacht Club met to make some decisions on the race calendar. We are pleased to announce that the Gold Cup Series will be going ahead with some revised dates, so dust off your sailing gear, because we are back from the 4th December!

Unless they know something that isn't public yet, this feels a bit overconfident in my opinion.  But it's a stake in the sand.

I would expect the clubs to take their cue from Yachting NZ and YNZ will take their cue from Sport New Zealand.

Sport NZ are still trying to work out what the Covid Framework means for sport teams, they have committed to making an announcement this week.

https://sportnz.org.nz/about/news-and-media/news-updates/covid-19-sector-update-18-november-2021/

We hope to have the new CPF sector guidance published in the week commencing November 22. Guidance will specifically cover how sport and recreation can operate at the three traffic light settings, along with FAQs. This will then allow you to interpret the guidance for your particular context.

Currently published level RED advice, under the CPF, requires 1m distancing for outdoor events - the expectation is that this applies to sports teams.

On face value, at the very least, this would eliminate yacht racing for a mixed bubble crew and mixed bubble committee boats.

The government needs to define clearly if close contact sports such as Netball, Rugby and Basketball are allowed.  This advice will, hopefully, come from SportNZ this week.
