Surely posting this photo breaches the site rules? It must be contrary to the terms and conditions?

Posting content that deliberately antagonises other site users, it's just blatant trolling now.

I mean, here I am, stuck in Auckland on a rainy grey weekend, two bored kids in the house, a very long list of boat maintenance jobs confronting me, and Bad Kitty is posting this sort of inflammatory and controversial material...

Get in line, he's been doing this to me for weeks....

Through an inverter off a lithium bank on a Garcia 52. Running Starlink by far the biggest draw on a daily basis other than the watermaker. Interesting philosophical comments not wanting to be connected. The boat wouldn't exist without the ability to pay for it; and with a budgeted opex of minimum 130k kiwi per annum - I think being connected to the things that fund annual activities necessary. The plan for the next few years at least is for the boat to be used 3-6 mnths each year at present there remains a need for the boat owner to be able to engage and direct his business interests in real time with each of his CEOs and wider senior staff.

BK's one is now 12v. Installed in a flat mount (so no motors). Draw varies depending on what's happening, but 4-5a. Still a lot over 24hrs, but way better than the inverter option with the std starlink router...

Without Starlink if you want to be contactable would had to anchor where there was some cell reception. With it you anchor where you like, even really steep sided anchorages like Milford Sound made no difference. That said we turn it of at night.

Is that a Gen 2 or Gen 3 antenna? The Gen 3, even without the motors has a higher power draw.

We run a Gen 2, have not done the 12V conversion yet, however power draw was generally manageable on last summer's cruising, except when we were not getting much solar output. We would switch it off when not in use. Found the antenna only orientated itself on startup and rarely moved after that, it was not continually on the mover.

12V conversion on the spring job list.

Gen 2, specifically for the lower draw.

I understand there’s a new antenna coming out, aimed more at campers, boats etc. IT may be able to expand on that?

Even without the motor trim it’s only taking a few minutes to get signal when we power it up in the AM.

Draw is looking like about 4 amps.

Starlink Mini,

https://www.techspot.com/news/103471-starlink-mini-299-dish-provides-100mbps-wifi-6.html

runs a bit slower than the Gen 2/3 units but still very useful. Runs off a USB point so no need for any DC conversions

I look forward to reading your comprehensive review.... 😁

Well it is installed, connected to 12v switch board.  Fired it up and it has done its updates etc.  Sitting in marina it was performing as expected.  It is up on top of the (speaks very quietly..... flybridge) so no obstructions.  Wifi strength was max across whole boat 36ft.  Next test will be when we head North.  I used a 12v to 36v converter out of Australia.  In hindsight I could have found a cheaper version.  It is wired to my panel.  Was showing in the starlink app as using ~24w.  Battery monitor was showing ~2 to 3 amp draw. So very happy.

Is any one using a Starlink Mini and the Roam / 50 GB plan on their boat?

Just did a delivery from Fiji to NZ with the roam 50GB Plan. 6.5 days and we used just over the 50GB. We did have 1 crew member working a couple of hours a day, made video calls back to family most days just because we could, oh and enjoyed watching MotoGP live in the middle of the Pacific. Was a game changer for weather routing, updates done in seconds etc.Couldn't fault it really, except you don't really get that disconnected feeling....

Has anyone pushed the limits of the new Roam plan?
I see in about October they change the plans and now include this:
"Coastal ocean coverage (up to 12 nautical miles off the coast) where Starlink provides active coverage around the world for up to 5 consecutive days at a time and a total of 60 days over the course of a one year period"

Pretty keen to not get 5 days into our christmas trip and find it turns off..

Where are you headed? In Fiji it worked all through the Lau Group, 190 nm from Suva, It's only out of area once you're truly offshore?

I'd expect no problems at Gt Barrier, Mercs, Cavalli's, Poor Knights etc.
