  1. If class has collapsed no one told any of the 100 Owners Association members or the owners of the 70 odd boats that show up on recent events on RaceTrack 😀 Jokes aside the class has been going strong for over 40 years driven by an active committee that started with the first boats. The association does its best to maintain the integrity of the rules and keep the class boats compliant. Kiwi "ingenuity" sometimes makes this a challenge and sometimes "feathers are ruffled". The strong Westhaven and Bucklands Beach fleets are more than matched by the recent growth of the class in Ly

  2. I swear we had this conversation some 5+ years ago wheels, but a VSR does not disconnect one battery from anything. It just joins two banks together, exactly like an emergency parallel switch does.

  3. DO NOT connect an old battery and a new battery together. Even if they are identical. DO NOT connect two different types (deep cycle with start, or AGM with FLA etc) of battery together. Do you have plenty of capacity with the current setup? If yes, the best idea is to get a small deep cycle for House. You can either use a charge splitter to isolate the two (my prefered situation) or a VSR. I do not like VSR's because you are still charging two unlike batteries and the battery the VSR disconnects never gets fully charged. Not so much of a problem if you tend to be a weekend sailor, the b

  4. They can be fidgety to open, especially if you have wet gloves on, that's why pull cords are advised to open them quickly. They could theoritcally shake off right, just like I could theoritcally find the winning lotto ticket blowing down my street.... I think it is very unlikely, but definitely not impossible. I have never had one shake off, while I have had bowlines shake out several times.

  5. CD, the DBC type is one physical switch, that effectively has 3 switches inside it, so it’s for both house, start and parallel functions. https://www.bepmarine.com/en/p/772-dbc-ez

  7. What’s the currents dog status at whiti marina ? Had a creworgers yapper jump ship while they were quaffing man o war by the box in opua marina . We were having dinner and it raced down the dock and dropped a nugget right at our transom . I found it funny but a few others were gagging on their food . Mum eventually retrieved the dog and smeared the nugget across the concrete trying to pick it up ….god I miss bayweek !

  9. While out last weekend we ran into a fuel problem. Engine starts and runs and then after a couple of hours it just lost speed and died. Approaching Music Point. Grrrrr. I bled the low pressure system and it restarted and ran all the way to PYBC for haul out. The next day we motored down the Tamaki, sailed to the back of Ponui, and waited for the tide to get into the Clevedon River (Wairoa River). We sailed over and about half a kilometre off the first approach stake we fired up the engine and got ready to pull in the sails. Just as we were about to drop the main, the engine d

  11. its a neater solution all round, doesnt catch the shrouds as much as a bowline and faster if changing sails. If you havent got eyes spliced in the ends of your sheets then youll need to buy new ones as thats almost impossible on old lines. Have tried them but not a big fan of integrated shackles as the button knot wont pass through sheaves easily and it's a tidier bundle at the clew with a single shackle with only one knot to catch shrouds, although you only need the softie on one sheet so there is that.

  12. Raven 26 then. No question about it. Cheap, oodles of room for a 26 footer - more like a 30 footer, and can take a lot of punishment weather wise Did I mention that my friend Annie Hill converted a Raven to Junk RIg a few years ago?.... heh heh, any excuse to plug Junk Rig!

  13. It’s a French thing, lots of the big shorthanded events there have a prologue Thinking is a short race will keep turnaround time to a minimum as fleet will be closer so minimising chances of sailors getting infected between legs Plus a one off race wasn’t what we originally planned ( I know 2 races isn’t 3 but it’s better than 1 ) If we’ve been too conservative then we apologise but our understanding is this can happen and we want to give everyone enough time to prepare. Working on finalising courses at the moment, high probability that they will be somewhat triangu

  14. Cheap boats don't usually end up being cheap boats. Agree, buy the best you can afford.

  15. It also depends on your age- sub 25 you can live in a Hartley 16 with your girlfriend and dog but post 60 you're probably going to need a bit more room. The best advice I can offer is look at the numbers. 2 Bedroom unit in AK is about 500 per week (minimum) call that in round figures 25k per year dead money- poof gone! Everyone needs to pay rent or mortgage so its all about how to spend it. If you are in a position to borrow say 100,000 even at 10% if you buy well, at the end of a year you're ahead because you are not spending like you would ashore. Assume depreciation is minimal be

  16. Thanks for the affirmations. I didn't report them but now wish i had. I did have an encounter of another sort a few days ago. Motoring up channel at 5 knots which is max speed against outgoing tide for me, a powerboat passed me at estimated 25 knots and within 5 metres. (not 50metres!) Of course i gesticulated! Caught up with them at the ramp. Asked the skipper whether he was aware of rules. He wouldn't meet my eye, but his hatchet faced wife accused me of having an attitude problem. I used to be against compulsory boat registration and skipper licencing, but i am changing my views!
