Looking for recommendations for a 30 - 40 ft liveaboard keeler

Webb Chiles had an Ericson 35 before he upgraded to an Ericson 37 for his first circumnavigation in. the 1970's. You didn't by his 35 by chance.... -

Btw to the OP, here is your 30 foot boat that you can live on and sail the world if you want. Auction ends tonight. In fact, I am tempted to bid myself at the current bid of only $5K odd! It will probably end up selling for $10K, leaving $10K in your pocket. The Chico 30 is a heck of a good design. Long waterline, transom hung rudder, built by a well respected boat builder, and on this one the teak decks have been wisely removed. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/listing/3438790843?bof=ZOpmVooi Go for it. -

Following on from Wheels and talk of costs...I bought a pocket cruiser for under $20K in 2016....two refits later (yes two not one) probably spent $200K on it over five years if I was to add everything up including haulage, hardstanding, marina berths, labour, materials, equipment etc etc etc . I stopped counting long ago though ha ha. Logical people will say I could have saved up over five years and bought a bigger boat with all the bells and whistles - "if" I had have had the patience. Unfortunately - or maybe fortunately - I chose with lots of naivety for sure, a different path. I w -
Avon Redcrest model for sale, made out of the durable and UV resistant Hypalon Fabric. Only reason for selling is that while this is a great inflatable for my needs, it is just a bit too big for my little pocket cruiser as I have nowhere to store it on deck due to my solar panels, and I have limited interior space - so I am changing to a smaller roll up inflatable My Redcrest is in used but good condition for its age. Holds air well for a few days, then just a couple pumps needed to top her up again. These have the famous Avon rowlocks, which means these inflatables row the bes

Don't most lagers?

I also reckon shouting the lads a few beers on a Friday goes down well and creates good camaraderie between you the client, and the tradesman/men! I did this while my previous yacht was being refurbished and it went down well. In the end, while business is business, we are all human, and prone to eff ups and misunderstandings, but it's amazing what a cold one at the end of the working week can do to discuss things and sort it all out... You can even get good quality 0.00% booze these days...

I did not know that. I bet there are other punters from the general public who would not know that either. That is why I am saying it pays to ask and set clear dilenations of what the breakdown of the bill will be....to me that should be the Tradesman advising that and not just expecting his would be customer know the 'standard practice'.
-
I established, with my prompting not his, that the rate was not an hourly rate his business charged as he seemed to indicate, but a 'per labourer' rate for each hour worked. Without my probing, I would have got a rude shock when I got the bill at double to the "hourly rate" he advised.

Pertinent story, thanks Wheels, and yep, I am one of those handshake and trusting 'ole Kiwi attitude fellas - but agree, it is getting to the stage now that some sort of formal agreement before the work is started is very wise.. Here is another thing to watch out for....lots of Tradesmen like boat builders, electricians etc, charge per hour per labourer -- I once wanted help to remove an inboard diesel from a boat some years back now...so while talking to the manager of the business I phoned, I asked "what is your hourly rate?" - he gave me the price. We then chatted about the job e

Always triple the time you "think" it will take -- trust me, after two recent refits I have come to know the harsh reality of this. One point I would like to make is the question of 'travel time' , 'petrol money' etc etc I once had to part out $240 travel time from North Shore to an Auckland suburb where my boat was at the time, to a rather well known 'osmosis expert' that spent no more than an hour at my boat. That was a few years ago now, but I was new to the game of boats and the 'bring out another thousand' acronym, but not now... So....make sure you set clear expectations

Do you set the alarm at the bow when dropping your anchor....or wait till you are dug in and set it at the cockpit?
-
Yep these are reportedly great units, as you seem to confirm. If I get the little bit that has fallen off re-soldered in due course, the price will go back up to my original price - which is still a bargain. At the moment, my price is a little ridiculously low, but then again I am preoccupied with other things right now....

The nor east swell from the cyclone definitely played its part....

So, is it time for the question: Is Tutukaka an irresponsible place to have a marina? No way, if I was a local, that I would be parking my boat there. Can't see Insurance companies now willing to insure your boat if you park there, without a massive hike in premiums....
-
Via text Pscyhe, just like we got from the Govt for the Covid lockdowns etc I think the media are indeed all over it now, but the point is, before hand, people were told the threat had passed, then Tutukaka promptly got smashed.
-
I agree Fish. What is worse, the media seems more worried about a Tennis player getting deported from Oz, than the absolute failure of the Tsunami alert system down here in NZ. I was in Tutukaka marina around this very time two years ago, and I feel for the community as the marina appears mostly destroyed with a lot of boats smashed up and sunk to boot.

In my opinion, everything the council has done, including Panuku, is all illegal, it is just that no one has the time nor money to take these scumbags to court. Glad I am out of Westhaven, never to return if I can help it.

2flit sent me the below PM, and with his permission, I am posting it here as advised to him via the new owners of Pelagic (Scanmar) so that if anyone wants to buy a brand new one, versus my second hand one, the below info might be useful... "There are some dates that are important. We took over in January of '19 and support units sold since that time. Units mfg prior to that are supported by Brian, the original developer. I wouldn't let that be a showstopper". "The most important thing is the color of the control head. If grey in color, I would pass, if white probably ok. The white

No idea - I am not a techy guy, never used this Pelagic, and I really don't care why or how. It's not a 'break', that little thing I point to in the photo came loose when the initial fella that bought it took it away - a few hours later he returned it as per my post earlier. If not enough information for you, that is fine, go and buy a brand new one at triple the price.
-
I have slashed the price to $550 for my Pelagic. I actually sold this for my asking price of $950, but then accepted its return as some little metal thing has fallen off (see where my finger is pointing in the photo attached) as the fella was off on a cruise and told me he does not have soldering skills nor the time to find someone who did as he was basically off sailing the next morning....so it's probably a 10 min job for someone with soldering skills, and as I cannot be a*rsed to get it fixed by someone, then this is your gain for a well respected auto pilot at a knockdown price. No retu

Y'all lucky buggers making me jealous...the wind last couple days would have blown me all the way north with joy....but I'm stuck at GH Marina trying to get the last job(s) done so I can go blinking sailing...still, maybe I'll miss all the anchorages filled with the Riverias manned by Captain Piddlemarks by the time I do get going
