Its a classic supply/demand type situation isn't it? D28s and Marauders for 25k? Wouldn't have imagined it 10 years ago.

Those mid-80s build D31s on TM look nice. When I was a kid we had a Tasman 20 keeler, Raven 26 and then a Lotus 9.2. Each of these seemed like a quantum leap over the previous. The Lotus was a fantastic cruising/club racer type, pretty damn solid and no IOR design cues like many of the abovementioned. There are a bunch of others in the same ilk; D28, Marauder, Lidgard 29, Farr 9.2, Carpenter 29, Raven 31 and so on. Its amazing how 'affordable' some of these have become now. There are also some bloody good timber boats on the market. This one intrigued me. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/bo

Looks like Epsom salts has just had a price drop. The whole dry berth sailing idea is intriguing........
  7. depends on the use. If you want to stow on deck/tramp an inflateable is great. Also kind on the topsides. But if all you use it for is to get to the mooring and back a hard dinghy can function just as well. I have two inflateables, both car-toppable, a small tube 2.6 great for stowing on deck, and a 2.8 RIB, which I use otherwise - its much dryer in a chop . Quality? depends largely on where they come from. Lots of cheap Chinese ones here, and some of them aren't bad. In Europe, get a Zodiac or Avon??

    Lotus 9.2

Our last Family keelboat back in the 1980s was a 9.2 (Sarney). Would agree with all the above a bit sticky in the light but handle and sail well.overall, roomy, stable etc etc. I was however surprised [at the time] that a relatively new boat would have osmosis, but by now most of them have probably had bum jobs. Great NZ cruiser/racer design IMO. Usual advice; buy the best well maintained and continually sailed example you can afford, not some sad old shitter thats been sitting unused on a mooring for a decade.
  9. Ha! the possibilities...............
  10. I have a 9.8 Tohatsu U/L on the standard Tenob large bracket. Motor weighs about 30 kg. I would say thats about the limit without the extra springs.
  11. The small keelboats mentioned are all good. I had a harmonic for years and had a good time with it. But if you are a cruiser I'd stick with a centerboard TS for the shoal draft and the ability to yank out on a trailer (keeping the above advice about trailer condition in mind) instead of expensive haul out yards and ability to park in the back yard etc. Always remember its better to spend a bit more and get a good, maintained example of whatever you choose rather than some bargain shitter.
  12. Been lots of rain - probably bits of everything flushed down the bogs from St Marys bay and surrounds....
  13. Mate, you should have seen the Breeders at Bruce Mason Center a few years back. Kim AND Kelly whoohoo .
  14. It wasn't stated. Kevin (and anyone else that likes to draw the really long bow) before you make another post look up Logical Fallacy and check against your post(s) PLEEEEZE!
  15. And a POV that wasn't expressed. Does the term Straw Man mean anything to you?
  16. I used the standard Altex two pack applied with a foam bullet roller over fresh No.3 Epoxy Primer. Just needs to be thinned down a fair bit. I didn't tip off with a brush. Pretty happy with the finish - and the paint, would certainly use it again. If you are doing a deck then presumably you'll be adding some non-skid as well so the quality of the initial finish may not be that important.
  17. I had a wander around it at low tide yesterday. Single chine v bottom hulls, small grounding keels, dagger boards, good bridgedeck clearance and bridgedeck well back, twin inboards with shafts and folding props. looks like a good cruising boat with decent sailing performance potential. Me like.

    Bye Bye Taeping

Any idea where she is off to?
  19. Given that the naming issue had been worked through, and the thread had drifted off into lala land and was on its way to petering out; I'm curious to know what your point was in making post #68?
  20. it is not a difference of opinion that is the 'High Horse' it is the way the opinion is expressed.
  21. Thanks Ken, found it on Blair Boat's facebook page. If anyone is interested.......... https://www.facebook.com/BlairBoats/photos/a.477162705700352.1073741831.465253380224618/802669849816301/?type=3&theater The bridgedeck cat looks vaguely Eric lerouge-ish to me, http://www.lerouge-yachts.com/catamaran.htm
  22. Seen around the Gulf from time to time. Bit different from the usual seen around here. Also, I seem to recall some one put up a link to a Facebook page showing the construction of a 31 foot Devilliers cat up in northland somewhere. Anyone have it?
