  1. That app works very well.
  2. Thanks Fish! Also, don't forget the starting order was changed around a couple of years ago so that the smaller boats start at 9.30am rather than 10.20am.
  3. We have been doing that for a couple of years! From the NOR: 5.0 FINISH TIME 5.1 The time limit: 1400 hrs, 26th October 2019. 5.2 Any yacht not reaching the finishing line by this time will be entitled to radio in their position and will be awarded a finish place. Any yacht finishing in this manner will not be eligible for handicap prizes but will be eligible for separate prizes if finishing in this manner.
  4. Electrics on an 8.5 are a bit of a pain in the arse as they they are constantly getting wet. Manual bilge pumps only required and on Freedom these were portable being mounted on Plywood. Good buckets are what you actually use to bail water out of a GBE. On Freedom, we mounted the switchboard and connections inside Systema Boxs to keep them dry and give them the best chance of surviving a capsize. Another tricky bit is to get the wires from one hull to the other. Voom just had the separate electrical system in each hull using one of those little 7ah 12v sealed batterys. Freedom had it
  5. I actually contacted them to see if they would check us out at Bayswater like last year and they replied with the info about the new facility, so I assume we'll need to head across to Z Pier to get checked out. So much easier than dropping into Marsden Cove like I was planning.
  6. Customs have just told me they have a new arrangement at Z pier at Westhaven to check in/out vessels up to 22m. It's pretty new and their website hasn't been updated yet, so email AKLMarine@customs.govt.nz for more info.
  7. This was a NZ Multihull Yacht Club lead request to Yachting NZ to run our race (Coastal Classic) as a "Cat3 minus Liferaft" Race. We've been working on this behind the scenes for a while, resulting in the NZMYC putting a proposal to the YNZ Keelboat and Offshore Committee (KORC) who agreed with the approach. Its a combination of many small advances in technology improving safety and the unique location of the race, has lead to this option being acceptable. We hope it will get many more boats onto the startline and we believe it actually makes it a safer race overall.
  8. Having worked at Sailors Corner (a long time ago), that's no surprise!
  9. Is there any benefit to sailors from the newer SOTDMA AIS units? The increased transmit frequency won't affect normal sailors who will be doing less than 14knots boat speed but the 5w transmit looks appealing over the 2w of normal units.
  10. This is the only solution I've found to this problem so far with Lady Nada.
  11. We have the 240V version as it was $150 from Container door. We were running it through our $250 2000w inverter (also Container Door) and it was awesome over summer. We'd typically run it when the solar had filled up the batteries or when we were motoring somewhere and had excess power, then put the ice cubes in the freezer in snap lock bags for drinkies later. We also found that it gets much more efficient if you cool the water beforehand or throw in some mangled ice cubes to cool the water down. Then you get nice big ice cubes much quicker. Sadly were now in CRISIS as the cheap big
  12. Great Work! Thanks for taking the time to share! You got my brother in laws partner falling off the Paddleboard!
  13. Here is the details of Freedoms main beam and how it is socketed into the hull. Freedom uses this beam with the track on the top and I think Voom uses the same section with the track facing rearwards. Both boats now have this section for their masts.
  14. Go on, bring the Family bus out to take on our Family house bus (we're living aboard at the moment). The boat is still in full Island cruising mode - 400L of Fijian diesel, paddle boards, kayak, dive gear, dinghy, far too much crap, etc
  15. I've gone past her a few times in the marina and she looks like a Open 60 that got stretched in length and shrunk in width....
  16. Its interesting listening to these guys talk to Peter Mott at Northland Radio. They have been checking in with him each day recently and he can give them basic weather info.
  17. Update - we made it to Tonga! Been here a month now and what an incredible range of cruising grounds. Check out the link to the blog below for the details and pretty pictures of perfect palm tree covered islands! https://sailingladynada.wordpress.com/
  18. For sale, as shown in the photos is: Iridium 9555 Cover 12v Charger 240v Charger Holder with additional aerial Data cord Software CD Manual All seems in great condition but I haven't used it as it came with the new boat. $600 Call Adrian 021 229 4005
  19. Having just brought an Austrailian owned and registered vessel (but was Kiwi built and has never been exported from NZ) there are a few other hidden costs I've come across to making the boat NZ registered again, such as: - Australia use a different MMSI numbers from NZ, so you can't transfer it between ownership. As the MMSI number can't be reprogrammed in our VHF, we'll need a new one. Our SSB might be the same as it allows two reprograms of the MMSI but it might have used them up already (Original NZ one. Aussie one, our new NZ one) - Ozzie Epirbs are different to our Epirbs and you ca
  20. I'd definitely recommend you talk to Bruce and Dinah on Margarita. Great people and great boat. I think they are still looking for someone for the trip through the Northern Cooks. http://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic/15479-rarotonga-and-the-northern-cook-islands-margarita/
  21. I think I was the first person to tell that guy the truth about his boat, not just "very nice, we'll get back to you". I then walked him through his boat pointing out all the issues, till he could see it from our prospective. We had that scenario at least 3 boats here in NZ!
  22. A view from the other side of the equation. While shopping for Cats here in NZ we looked at a few where the guys had brought them in the Caribbean, sailed home to NZ and were trying to sell them. The problem they had was that they had made their plan off looking at the listed prices of similar boat here in NZ, not really knowing those boats were not selling at those prices. They then did the trip, get very attached to the boat and think it is worth top dollar, when its actually just sailed half way around the world and is a bit tired. He wants his trip to cost nothing The real pro
  23. The Lusty and Blundell dudes were telling me this type of charge needs to happen about once a month for the battery to keep its performance. I was thinking I could probably achieve it by running both engines and the generator running a 60amp charger at the same time. Once a month would be OK to have to do that. I made a spreadsheet to map out cost vs usable capacity vs cycles. Replacing the current AGMs is still the cheapest option long term. I'm thinking I'll replace the AGMs and spend the difference on more solar to keep them topped up.
  24. Has anyone tried these new style lead acid batteries? They seem to bridge the gap between AGMs and Lithium, in that they have much more usable depth of discharge and lifespan (6000 cycles), while being compatible with normal charging systems (unlike Lithium). They are still heavy through! Some of the brands I've found available here: https://www.hiteksolar.co.nz/collections/solar-on-the-go/products/6v-300ah-lead-carbon-supercapacitor-lcs-pb-c-battery-latest-technology http://waveinverter.co.nz/deep-cycle-battery/Sealed-AGM/Lead-Carbon-200AH https://www.lusty-blundell.co.nz/product
