sometime that happens because there is a lack of nationwide directive and at a local level "doing nothing" is not considered a reasonable option. For anything in relation to ships, big or small, moving around the country its usually not a good approach.....

Interested to hear how that works out,I have looked at that site before and it seems quite dated...
-
think that only works if its commercial or you have already registered for a MMSI, if you have just got a bog standard CG callsign don't think you will find it there
-
if its quite a short one, i thought they could be used when the pole was right forward on the forestay. The Whisker pole went out at right angles on the mast to give the guy some angle on the main pole

Interesting idea but I think unlikely, they tend to have much higher bow and taller bridge for spotting, pretty slow for a chaser too

or look at February onwards, weather better then.
-
Great idea, just bear in mind that summer can be a bit later down this way, from about Christmas onwards, usually anyway...

if you can cope with it not being on paper, most of it is now in an app https://www.cruiseguide.co.nz/

Have a look at the LINZ website, they have an on-line converter and more datums than any normal person would know what to do with. At the same time talk to them as they might be able to make intelligent guess about which one you should use

At this stage it seems few units can see the weather data transmitted by AIS, and that includes Class A. Like being able to AtoN this will come to more units over time I suspect.

the tonnage fee, if based on measurement, is likely to be a volume measurement rather than the displacement. Roughly the cargo carrying volume of the boat based on the number of French wine barrel's you could cram into it

if you want to view it as a suicide attempt and think that is ok, then yes you may have a point. I suspect that wasn't his plan as there must be easier ways.... The 'report' came from several non-government types that are well acquainted with yachts and the sea and it too him about 4 hours to sail out of Evans bay in a 12 knot northerly from memory. He may not have been able to call for help but that does't preclude a search being started. There were many people involved who, I suspect, would not have slept well had he disappeared never to be seen again. I'm not commenting on the

that particular boat was looking a lot worse than that when in Wellington, and I am guessing his sailing ability (read that as " knowing that the halyard has to be tight") improved somewhat during his time sailing around Wellington harbour. and the reality at the time was he was likely to head out into cook strait to become the target of a Search & Rescue mission.

Well done to the Dickson's, Hamish first (in his family's 30ish year old boat) and his father 2nd.

hey Geoff I have a few more photos of you from the 24 hour race if you want them. PM me an email and I can send them through

that's quite some damage. If I've got it right the top photos is the Boatshed Cafe which sits a (usually ) healthy distance above the water, the next two are "the boathouse" way back was the sea scouts and maybe the rowing club (60ish years now....) and the last photo is Nelson Yacht Club. The have a lot of boat storage on the same level so hopefully not too many battered boats. "Haulashore Island" way back in the day when proper ships had sails (and a long way before the cut was put through the boulder bank) it was a nice sheltered spot with 3-4 m tides so most likely a handy post for

it looks more like you are the one that has been "stiffed" here Beccara; has sound advice, be very clear on what was agreed and go from there. I would have thought their easiest (and cheapest ) way out will still be to get the job done properly, they might just need a little prod to get them to see it that way.

Picking out only part of the bylaws can be misleading, we have the same rule in Wellington that goes on to say "unless a helmsman is standing by in the immediate vicinity of the helm or wheel" so what does that mean? Don't leave it on autopilot and go below for a sleep; keep a watch and be ready and able to alter course if you need to. If you are sailing and using the auto-helm to help you out you are obviously on deck, alert and hopefully even keeping a lookout. So you comply with the bylaw. also the bylaws are just about you, they cover a whole range of vessels. Neil, if you

I do wonder why I bother replying on here some times, but I guess I'm a sucker for punishment. NZ extends south of the Bombay hills and we do not copy everything that happens north of there, we live breath make decisions without checking first what is happening in the north. It is the Greater Wellington Regional Council, regional councils are still a thing in quite of lot of the country.... I would hope when you do your big tour you actually think ahead and do some planning before you show up at another port, (then you don't need to have interwebs on board.) Most of the rules are s

think you need to get your hearing checked KM, (or maybe ignore those 'other' voices) we have been educating them for 15 years plus, some have a low interest in learning. I also talked about why speed is an issue, not as interesting unfortunately and didn't get the air time, but possibly what you were hitting at ( i think..got confused somewhere between the dog turds and the wheeties.) infringements as a source of income... you are a comedian , the time and shagging around involved is not worth the $$ let me assure you of that and those that got tickets were given the option of enr

you could find a bach to rent to stay ashore and then day trip from there, we have used these people in the past and had a great holiday http://www.kulakrentahouse.co.nz/ many places will have a jetty or mooring as well
-
from memory there is no requirement for vessels under 12m to carry day shapes so you might be right off the hook Myjane

i understand that has been corrected and the revised version sent out.
