There's a multi in Tauranga called Ladyhawk, is this the type of tri or is it too big and slow https://www.boatdesigner.co.nz/reviews/bw2001.htm

I have a small pack, a little smaller than the above picture. It is a Lithium Cobalt type ($100) which is supposed to be the worst. It is amazing, jumpstarted my boat (Yanmar 40 hp) and many cars in the Marina carpark. It sruggles when there is a completely flat battery so if you wait for around 20 secs it usually succeeds. Also, it charges up cell phones and devices. There is a warning not to leave it connected for over 10 seconds after starting and I think that is the most dangerous thing to do as far as I can see. It is rated to 300A so I used my clamp meter to measure the current and it

Not sure on details sorry, I will have to call him. I think it was the house battery though
-
The battery was on a smart charger which was disconnected from the 240V supply and then the engine was started. A possible severe battery cell imbalance maybe?
-
It was a local yachtie and I don't know the details but it was quite seriously worrying. Looks to have been a short somewhere so I was looking for suggestions.

What do you think would have caused this battery meltdown on the weekend

Great photo of Tweety Bird earlier in the post - now racing in Tauranga.

I have a speaker mounted in the cockpit but it is subject to damage from crew and weather. A possibility could be a surface? speaker (flat panel exciter) that mounts internally against a free panel which turns into the speaker when the magnetron vibrates, so there is no orifice in the panel that may leak. The sound quality is poor in deeper sounds but ok speaking levels. Available from Jaycar for around $16.00. A boat nearby has a whole swarm of them stuck inside the boat in the cockpit and sounds great.

Thanks KM, good info. Should I attach it to the sliding slot with a cable tie or directly to the smaller end orifice?

Thanks for sharing your experiences, especially Fish with his testing especially. Looks like a Manson it will be!

I'm looking at replacing my Manson 40 plough on my Farr 38 with a Manson Supreme as the plough tends to skip rather than dig especialy on hard packed sea beds. It's on 40 metres of 10 mm chain, but I may be able to buy a 25 rather than the recommended 35 which doesn't fit in the locker. Would the 25 have superior holding to the 40 plough?

RaceQs trackers give coverage using Google Earth background which looks great but I think it is not being supported by developers anymore due to lack of income possibly. Still able to be used at present though luckily.

We had racing insurance from FMG but when we failed to pull on the backstay and the top of the mast folded forward we were denied insurance because we didn't hit anything or have a fire! An expensive mistake not to read the fine print!

We had a great weekend at the Mercs on Labour Weekend as part of the Legends Regatta. Lovely evenings with no wind and nice sea breezes during the day for the races. Here is a picture one of my crew took at the entrance of the Cove

I use the Hempels Globic NCT and that seems to be pretty good, similar to old Micron 66 but much cheaper and better than Altex No.5. It's supposed to work even when there is no water movement

We had a great weekend at the Mercs on the long weekend but whilst cooking pizza the oven door (Plastimo) and surroundings became so hot the chef received some burns from the door and safety latch, is this common?

Despite all the other stuff, I really like the articles by John MacFarlane, really interesting and often full of great technical advice.

Have you checked the radiator cap and where it seals, a common problem in older Subarus, they just spit out heaps of coolant that looks to be overheating and erode the sealing ring surface on the radiator as well? I'd try another cap and make sure it sits on the filler mouth area with good pressure, a tricky problem!

I looked at several E1050's in Auckland about a year ago, Sniper is a class above them all, it has been well maintained and is well fitted out for cruising. It has a really good keel and goes upwind like nothing else. It wasn't for sale when I was looking, It was built as the plug for the production 1050s I think.

Hi Dan, I checked out your Facebook page and I see you have had some amazing adventures. Looks like you are living the dream and exploring everything the South Is. has to offer and more (Chathams) Keep it coming, I hope to visit some of those spots within the next 5-10 years so I'll keep an eye out, cheers Andy
